Puns

[livejournal.com profile] astrogirl2 said about the wording on my icon: "It took me a second to get that, but when I did... Oh, groan! That's truly a pun worthy of Vila."

"That bad, was it?" I thought. "I can do worse." So I mailed her a little slanging match between Vila and Tarrant which I've been keeping for a story I can fit it into. In the meantime I added a lead-in and thought I'd stick it here. It's also a good test of how this lj-cutty-thing works.

***

A bit of pun

Del Tarrant sat back from the pilot's console and stretched. "Go and get us a hot drink, Vila."

"Who died and made me your slave?"

"Oh, come on. You're a service grade, though I see precious little evidence of it."

Vila glared. "Did you know that the first five letters of your name spell Delta? Was your mum telling you something, then?"

"You leave my mother out of this!" Tarrant said, and added with dignity, "I'll have you know I inherited quite a few features from my father, who was an Alpha through and through!"

"Features? I'd have called 'em bugs meself."

Avon looked up from his latest gadget and smiled.

"I got an A-1 genetic rating!" Tarrant said indignantly.

"Only a rating?" Vila grinned. "I'd have thought you'd get a Fleet officer at least!"

Tarrant frowned, then got it. "Puns are the lowest form of wit, which seems about right for you. You're an ill-educated, lazy, good-for-nothing, undisciplined, spineless little layabout!"

"Oh, listen to him!" Vila put his feet up on his console. "It's a Delta rant!"

Argh! Wonderful. And no, I never had noticed that about Tarrant's name - but I can well believe Vila would.

I've toyed with letting Vila have a pet tarantula called Del.

As I said via e-mail: ROTFL!

I like the lead-in you added, too. And, man, after that remark, Tarrant clearly deserved everything he got! :)

Greetings

Hello all, I'm new to this Journal malarkey, and just finding my way around. I'm a big fan of Vila, and had the honour of meeting Michael Keating recently (finally fulfilling a dream I have had since I was 6)

Hey, welcome! I'm new too, not even a week old.

And you met Michael Keating! [jealous seethe] Was it at the Milton Keynes collectors' fair? MK @ MK! My friend [livejournal.com profile] quarryquest was there and spent much of the day chatting to him. [sigh] I wish I didn't live in a city on the edge of the world. Michael is going to be at the Star One con next year along with a very impressive list of other guests, so I've booked already in the hopes I can raise the huge airfare.

And I see from your LJ we have quite a bit in common:
Blake's 7
books
writing
trying to lose some weight
a sub to New Scientist
being a newbie
I'm looking for a job right now; I'd love to work in a library, but it would be like working in a chocolate shop--I wouldn't be able to resist the temptation to read on the job.

Re: Greetings - sorry about the ramble, it's a bit long...

You're right, it was at the MK collectormania. All the people I went with were getting excited about other people but I was focused and really wanted to meet him. I was so lucky! We were really early getting there, having left home about 5.30am to pick up all our friends (we have the big car, so we are the general mini-bus for everything)and I was getting so twitchy, trying to find Michael K. When we found where he was going to be sitting, he was already there, waiting to be set up. I grabbed my friend Cat and said "right, this is it, I'm going to HAVE to speak to him" and just went over and said "Hello, I've come here to meet you!" He was great, would have recognised him anywhere, not having changed a bit. And then we spent the next quarter of an hour chatting - about normal, everyday things, about the last time he was in MK, and how he and his partner like walking and we talked about some beauty spots in my local area that he had been to etc. It was everything I had dreamed about, and far better than the 15 seconds of "who would you like it signed for?" that I had thought I would get. I even told him that when I was 7 I wanted to marry him, which I think he found sweet, rather than disturbing! I've got some nice pictures, I might try and load one on.

Good luck with the job thing. I adore working in the Library, it is an automotive technical library, rather than a public one. But it works in exactly the same way. Trouble is we are facing redundancies (3rd time in 2 years) and I'm terrified that someone sitting behind a desk will decide to take me away from my beloved Library.

Ooooh, you are so lucky! And I didn't mind the ramble at all--reading about Michael Keating is not in the least bit boring! My friend was kind enough to send me some pics she took there, one of which was him smiling just for me.

Can you send me any or your pics by e-mail? My addy is on my B7 website Breaking Orbit (http://www.farsight.net.nz/). It focuses on our Vila so you might like some of the stories and other stuff there. There are also some pics of Michael when he was here in NZ in 1988. I never saw him then (having become a fan watching reruns in 2001) but some people I know did and were kind enough to let me put some photos on my site.

Good luck with your job too! I know all about redundancies, having been through one and narrowly avoided another.

I've sent the pictures to you from your website, you are welcome to use them if they are good enough/suitable/interesting etc. I'm looking forward to reading the fanfic etc and having a general nose around. Seeing your cats on there reminded me that I had a gerbil called Vila in about 1979 (don't worry, the cat didn't get him, it's just the way my mind works, thinking about pets in general, he had a long and happy life!) He used to sit in my hand when I watched telly, so sweet.

I've just woken up and found them! They're wonderful! Thanks so much, I will put them up on my site on the conventions page. If you like, I can crop you and your friend out so it's just Michael. I'll send you the ones my friend sent me.

Awww, very cute! In my B7 universe, Vila does indeed have a long and happy life--he deserves it after everything he went though. And I saw in your profile you have cats too--another thing in common!

ROTFL!!!!! Bwhaahhhaha!

And I know I'm damn slow with puns sometimes, but I only got the pun on your icon just now. And psst, if you want the text on that to stand out better, Auntie's Icon Factory is at your perusal. Just send me the original photo and I'll see what I can do, ASAP:)
