Last night

It's been wet for two days so:

  • I went to see Hot Fuzz which was fun. Simon Pegg played a hot-shot cop who made his fellow police look so bad, they packed him off to a quiet little village. It seems a bit slow at first, but almost everything you see and hear is used in the climactic and explosive last half-hour or so.

  • I went back to the Creative CafĂ© and made two necklaces using some of their gorgeous glass beads. At last I'll have something to post in [livejournal.com profile] glarmaco this Monday.

  • We had two excellent dinners out. I now know where to eat and where not for our next visit to Taupo, because we'll be baaack.
I'm glad we didn't go up north this year because it's been cut off by heavy flooding today; some travellers will have to spend the night in their cars. Eep. We drive back to Auckland tomorrow morning (in other words, I do, because I do all the long-distance stuff) and I'm hoping it's cleared by then, though it hasn't been anywhere near that bad down here.

See you all tomorrow afternoon. :-)

I'm glad that you've had such a good time.

Hot Fuzz is great fun, though the supposedly quiet little town had a remarkably well-staffed police station. I live in a place about the same size, or a little larger, than the small town in the film appears to be, and our local police station is only open during office hours. Outside that period, our policing is provided from a rather larger town some eight miles away. (I think I must have a bee in my bonnet about this!)

Well, your town obviously realises the dangers of a well-staffed police station!

Some friends took me to Hot Fuzz, and laughed uproariously all the way through. I think I laughed once. There was nothing wrong with it - and I liked the implicit gay theme - it just didn't connect with my sense of humour.

It didn't look that small a town. Did they call it a village in the film? When I was in the UK, I saw some tiny places and [livejournal.com profile] linda_joyce said that a village had fewer than 100 houses, and a hamlet fewer than 50. Eh, maybe the town committee worked it so they got more police than normal to keep everything looking good. :-)

:)

As a rough rule of thumb, I would say that less than about 5,000 people would be a village, over it a town. A hamlet would be no more than a couple of ghundred. My rough guess at the population of the place in Hot Fuzz would be around 10,000.

That's a pretty big town, twice the size of the one I spent most of my childhood in. We don't actually have villages here for some reason, just cities and towns (some of them very small); I'm not sure why.

[identity profile] jhall1.livejournal.com 2007-03-30 09:24 am (UTC)(link)
It sounds like the NZ usage is similar to the US one then, where the smallest place can be a town. But in the UK, where small settlements are called villages, I think that 10,000 would count as a small town.

Glad you liked Hot Fuzz

It was fun, and the end was a riot! I'd say more but I don't want to spoil people.

I'm sorry the weather's turned bad! It sounds as though you had a good run, though - I'm glad about that.

Oooh, are you going to post photos of your necklaces? The Creative Cafe sounds great - so they do both ceramics and jewellery?

I hope the drive back goes well tomorrow. Safe journey!

I'm back! The drive up was OK if a bit wet, but up north where we were last year, the resort by the Haruru falls got washed away. The towns are all cut off, and people have been rescued from roofs and trees. :-( If we'd gone there this year. we'd still be there.

The cafe does indeed do both which is very cool, and they serve good espresso there too. :-D I'll post pics of the necklaces because I need them for [livejournal.com profile] glarmaco anyway. I also bought beads for a third one, but I need to buy supplies and equipment from the local craft shop (wire, clasps, crimps, special pliers).

I have so many holiday photos this time, I'll have to post them to am LJ gallery for people to look at.

I'm pleased you enjoyed the movie. I wasn't expecting to, so it was a nice surprise when I did. Take care while driving tomorrow - we definitely want to see you back properly tomorrow afternoon :D

I'm back! The weather wasn't as bad as up north, plus the roads are a lot better, so it was a good trip but for the road works on the northbound expressway. :-)

That's always the problem with holidays, they have to end.
Glad you enjoyed it and wishing you a safe journey.

Thank you, and I had one., :-) I'm back safe and will be collecting the cats after 4pm; seeing them again make coming back also a pleasure. And having broadband again, yes!

Take care while driving. Glad you had a good time.

I did, but it's also nice to be back with the cats (whom we collect in about an hour).

At last I'll have something to post in glarmaco this Monday.

Yay!

If someone remembers to do the "weekly" post...

I really do like [livejournal.com profile] glarmaco; it encourages me to be artistic in a way I haven't been for years. 8-)

It still feels like summer now the storm's gone, but I also need to draw an autumn picture to iconise. Maybe at Easter.
