Guess the last two series

I have just two none left:

3. How to survive on another planet in another time. Life on Mars

10. One of them never says yes or no. SG1 (Teal'c)
Here are some more clues.

#3 is a play on both the title and the premise.

#10 is a very well-known and long-running SF series, and one character, like the Irish (Gaelic doesn't have the words) never uses them.

Ack. 3 must be Life on Mars.

Indeed!

like the Irish (Gaelic doesn't have the words)

And the Welsh, but it doesn't help me in the slightest.

I'm not sure if you've ever seen it. It's an American show and you've never mentioned it.

The character BTW is a long way from being Irish.

I didn't know Welsh also lacked yes and no. I've never heard the same circumlocutions from them that the Irish use:
"Are you going to town today?"
"I am not."

In English we use both yes and no but in Welsh we have to do the same as the Irish. There is one single word answer for yes and I think also for no in Welsh but both translate as multiple word answers I am and I am not.

Is it lost in space? I have a vague recollection it being said that a certain Dr Zachary Smith avoiding the use of those two words.
Of course its so long since I saw any of the original I don't recollect myself either way.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-03-26 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
It is not.

All the series I used are either current or extremely recent, and ones I was sure most people would know and guess. This one has a big fanbase. :-)

Well the only other person I know who uses circumlocution like that is Data, which would make it STTNG.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-03-26 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
It is not Data. Perhaps you do not watch this television series, Steed of Jaxom.

[identity profile] jaxomsride.livejournal.com 2007-03-26 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Perhaps not!
Or I just don't get it from the clue.

[identity profile] mistraltoes.livejournal.com 2007-03-27 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Eh. Is that Teal'c, from SG-1?

[identity profile] jaxomsride.livejournal.com 2007-03-27 05:09 pm (UTC)(link)
You know I'd never noticed that about Teal'c. Mind you its been a Looong while since I've actually seen any Stargate!

I love language and tend to notice quirks of speech and accent. :-)

So do I usually but never noticed that.

Is #10 Spock in Trek?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-03-27 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
It is not, Kerr Avonsen.
kerravonsen: Daniel and Jack: friendSHIP (GenPride)

I see that someone above has already guessed it, but your reply made me twig that it was Teal'c.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-03-27 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
:-) I was trying to do that with other comments, but only you two got it.

It wasn't just the lack of yes and no, it was the use of the full name...

[identity profile] mistraltoes.livejournal.com 2007-03-27 08:54 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, what she said. I hadn't thought about Teal'c not using yes and no; I had to have a piece of dialogue long enough to hear his speaking rhythm. With a name, that doesn't have to be a very long piece.
