Fat Tuesday

OK, that was quite a good day.

  • I went to a pancake feast with some friends from work and ate four of them (pancakes, I mean) with lemon and cinnamon sugar. [hangs head]

  • Then I went straight on to my Tai Chi class, and though I didn't think being full of pancakes and coffee was particularly conducive to good form, I was fine. It was too hot so we had the class outside on the grass which was really nice.

  • And then I came home to watch us... beat Australia again! [jaw drops] That make three out of three games, and each one ending with a boundary (a four tonight). I am both stunned and delighted.
And now I'm off to bed. It's sticky and hot but I have installed a new fan, bought on the way home, which shouldn't rattle and annoy me when I'm trying to go to sleep, and the thing looks powerful enough to create a decent chill factor.

It's good to hear that it was the pancakes you ate. Eating that many work friends at once would be very bad for your digestion.

It does sound like a good day all round - I'm glad you had a good time. I had pancakes on Sunday evening, because there's no way I'll have time tonight. Mmm, they were very nice.

I hope the fan helps keep you cool!

Not to mention not very kosher. ;-)

The ones we had were cooked by one of my friends from scratch and very nice too: big thin ones like crepes. :-) Another friend wanted to buy some ready-made ones to take home but the supermarkets were all sold out. Eh, they're not that hard to make. I sometimes do them for breakfast.

The fan should work a lot better than the small one we had in the bedroom. I have a big black retro industrial one aimed at me right now in the lounge: bliss.

Another friend wanted to buy some ready-made ones....

I've always felt that, regarding the Shrove Tuesday tradition, this is somewhat missing the point. Which is, to use up the eggs and other rich ingredients that one may not eat during the Lenten fast.

And if one just likes to eat pancakes, as you say, they're not hard to make :)

Eating that many work friends at once would be very bad for your digestion. But it would cut down the competition for the next promotion...

[modestly] Oh, I couldn't eat a whole one.

Mmm, cinammon sugar :0) Actually, that has given me an idea. I already have jars where I have made lavender sweetner and vanilla sweetener, I think I'll have to make cinammon now.

I used to do Tai Chi and I'd totally forgotten doing it outside on the grass in the summer, thanks for the memory :0)

Vanilla and lavender sweetener? You mean like Splenda, but with vanilla beans in it? I've never thought of doing that. This was just sugar mixed with a little cinnamon and I was careful not to use much; I like my pancakes lemony and tart. :-)

yes, I put the sweetener in a jar and I've got a vanilla pod in one and lavendar flowers in the other (I bought them from Neals Yard, so they are ok for food) and they are yummy. Whenever I use a bit I just top it up and it keeps flavouring it. Even with sweetener I have to be careful, as some have milk products in them, would you believe it. Tsk.

OK, I'm so trying that!

Gosh, you did! I was a bit doubtful when I went to bed with Australia 200-plus for one with a dozen overs to go!

I'd forgotten it was Shrove Tuesday until I woke up to a pancake recipe on Woman's Hour. I think I'll make mushroom pancakes for dinner. And then, as I happen to have finished a bar of chocolate last night, I'm wondering about giving chocolate up for Lent. To see if I can.

It came right down to the last over with no wickets left! I think 350 is the second-highest one-day score. :-)

I'm having elote tonight - Mexican corn on the cob with cheese and chilli, an experiment after eating it last weekend at a cafe run by Real Mexicans.

No chocolate for the whole time? :-( Actually, I think I could do it. I couldn't give up cheese though; it's a major component of too many meals.

Second-highest batting second. We've had four totals of 400-plus in the past 12 months!

I don't think I could live without cheese. But I do occasionally go for a week or two without chocolate, so I think it might be feasible to do six weeks. Particularly now I've said so in public.

Ah, that's what it was.

Well, go you! I'd try to join you, but a couple of squares is the best way to stop the low-blood-sugar shakes I sometimes get.
