Birthday ficlet: Bomber

A little birthday story for [livejournal.com profile] kalypso_v. Word count: a century and a quarter.

Bomber

"My aide tells me that you were once a cricketer. A rather well-known one."

"Aye, Commander."

"Supreme commander." Servalan checked the dossier on her screen. "I have never seen the point of sports games, especially one that can last for days, and I have no idea what a fast bowler is. Tell me, what made you resign from the Terran interplanetary side and take up your present profession?"

"Ah." Jarriere placed a thoughtful finger against his nose. "I was known as 'Bomber' for demolishing the opposition's defence, ye see, and it used tae occur to me what fun the real thing would be. I have tae say, it's been much more satisfying."

Love then, not conviction; he would ask no questions. "Very well. You're hired."

{choke splutter} That's wonderful...

I had to do something with Jarriere and cricket. :-)

Thank you! As it happens, Jarriere may be resuming his cricketing career (but with the keeper's gloves) next month. Michael and I are planning to return to the original Blake's XI v the Federation fixture, as we seem to have exhausted the possibilities of Babylon XI.

Word count: a century and a quarter.

I'm not quite that old yet!

When Greg saw the word count, he suggested I go for a Nelson, but that would have been bad luck.

I hope we'll get a report here! How have previous matches gone?

We almost beat Australia last night to my amazement and regret that it was so close.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-01-28 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
BTW how do you play those matches? With cricket dice, ordinary dice, or do you decide the form of the different players somehow?

We used to do it with Owzthat, but now we use a spinner game which produces more realistic scores. And I still haven't written up the match from two years ago, so I'll have two reports to write in March...

Redemption sounds like so much fun. I wish I lived over there.

I wish you could come! Chris B can't be there this time, and it will be the first time she's missed the cricket match - and it's ten years since we first played, at Who's 7 '96, when we had to finish the game on the train back to London, to the astonishment of the other passengers.

At first I thought you meant Boucher. ;-P I suppose she plays Vila. I do wish I could.

That is fun! It occurred to me, irrelevantly, that he's the only cricketer I know of, offhand, with a Scottish accent - but then I don't know the sport well. There must be others?

Lots. Scotland have qualified for the forthcoming World Cup (it would be amusing if they could go one better than England and beat Australia), and previously featured in the 1999 tournament. One of the most famous cricketing Scots was Mike Denness, who captained England in the early 1970s. And he was succeeded by Tony Greig, who liked to claim he was a patriotic Scot when he was trying to distract people from his South African accent. But they're scattered throughout county cricket - Gavin Hamilton, Dougie Brown, Navdeep Poonia - though some stay at home and play in the Scottish NCL.

*laughs* I admire the cheek of that

*giggle* Excellent!

Thanks!

he would ask no questions

An initial S didn't register when you typed that, I think.

There's what appears to have been an exciting match in the one day series and TMS isn't covering it. Oh well, highlights this evening.

She was thinking that Jarriere would ask no question; just do the job for love. Stet.

Ah, now I see. Nice story.
