Testing 1 2 3

This is my first entry in my brand-new LJ, so this is mainly a test to see what it looks like.

I had all sorts of inventive ideas for a username based on my own name, various nicknames, or clever wordplays, but they were all taken. Even Spitfire, which I was called in primary school because of my love for WW2 fighter planes--took me ages to find out the other meaning. So I've taken the easy route and just used my yahoo ID, which is Vilakins, a pet name for my favourite Blake's 7 character, Vila Restal. And yes, my icon is him as well, the same cute pic of him I have on my fan-fiction site.

I've had fun setting up my site's theme, but I have yet to find out how to do links and add pics to the journal. Do you need to download a client for that, or is the web update adequate, I wonder?

Hi!

Hey, we talked you into it! That was easy! :)

(I'm at work at the moment, so if you mentioned setting this up in e-mail, I haven't seen it yet. I just happened to notice a suspiciously familiar ID showing up on my "friends of" list.)

Welcome to LJ!

I'm not sure you can put up pictures without a paid account unless you host them remotely, but I'm hardly the best person to ask, being relatively new and clueless about this stuff, myself. I do know that you can add links by fiddling with your "customize" settings, if you have a style that lets you do that.

Did you mean links in the bar down the side, like the ones you have to your blog and B7 page? I don't need any more there. I meant links to pages hanging off the LJ like the ones you have for your drabbles, or to other sites I think people might find interesting. Do you write the HTML directly to provide a link or use a downloaded client?

Hi, and welcome!

I use a client to update my LJ, but that doesn't affect the way links go in. For an offsite link just drop in the usual HTML code, and to put part of an entry behind a link use a 'cut gtag'. LJ isn't letting me put pre-formatted text here, so I'll just hand you this page about cut tags (http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=75) which explains all :-).

Welcome again! Yay!

Bah, typoed 'cut tags' already.

PS: adding images is just HTML too, which means you have to host them on another site. I still use my old BT one for mine.

Hey, thanks very much for that! I went through the FAQs and found the answers to a few questions I hadn't figured out on my own--yeah, I'm the sort who leaps right in and only reads manuals when I'm stumped.

Just testing if I can do this from my mail client...

Hiya!

Didn't know you were getting one of these! Glad you have though! Will be pleased to hear your mutterings, must update mine soon.

Thanks! Did you get the e-mail I sent you about B7 location lists?

Yeah, [livejournal.com profile] spacefall is right, it's just basic HTML that you drop in when you're writing an entry. I think the client is quite handy (especially when the servers are being slow) but I use both that and the Web interface.

Feel free to use any of my icons, btw! If you have any requests I'd be happy to make some more. Spread the Vila love!

Cool, thanks! And that's what my fiction aims to do!

FWIW I've never bothered to download a client, and if anything that seems to save trouble.

BTW what they don't make very clear at all is how to post to a different journal (e.g., to make a new post in a community instead of just replying to one). You have to be logged in (and you can log in FOREVER, which I did recently...it saves a lot of trouble), but then when you hit Options you'll get a drop-down box of all the places you're authorized to post, and then you just click on one.

I'll stick to the web interface then; I've found it easy enough to use so far. And I already am logged in forever, laziness being one of the many attributes I share with Vila.

I use the web interface, myself. I tried downloading a client, but I coudn't get it to work. The web interface seems perfectly adequate, though.

Hello, you!

Good to see you here at last.

Thanks! All these welcomes are making me feel very chuffed!

I like your mood icons! I use the purple kitties. I use the web update as I have no idea what a client is or how to download one. It seems to work OK. And I have all the same worries about what to put on the thing. Nice to see you!

Thanks! I saw your cute purple cats. I was very tempted by the blue ones as I have a sweet grey Burmese (Claudia) whose colour is officially blue.
