Testing 1 2 3
This is my first entry in my brand-new LJ, so this is mainly a test to see what it looks like.
I had all sorts of inventive ideas for a username based on my own name, various nicknames, or clever wordplays, but they were all taken. Even Spitfire, which I was called in primary school because of my love for WW2 fighter planes--took me ages to find out the other meaning. So I've taken the easy route and just used my yahoo ID, which is Vilakins, a pet name for my favourite Blake's 7 character, Vila Restal. And yes, my icon is him as well, the same cute pic of him I have on my fan-fiction site.
I've had fun setting up my site's theme, but I have yet to find out how to do links and add pics to the journal. Do you need to download a client for that, or is the web update adequate, I wonder?

Hi!
(I'm at work at the moment, so if you mentioned setting this up in e-mail, I haven't seen it yet. I just happened to notice a suspiciously familiar ID showing up on my "friends of" list.)
Welcome to LJ!
I'm not sure you can put up pictures without a paid account unless you host them remotely, but I'm hardly the best person to ask, being relatively new and clueless about this stuff, myself. I do know that you can add links by fiddling with your "customize" settings, if you have a style that lets you do that.

Re: Hi!
I use a client to update my LJ, but that doesn't affect the way links go in. For an offsite link just drop in the usual HTML code, and to put part of an entry behind a link use a 'cut gtag'. LJ isn't letting me put pre-formatted text here, so I'll just hand you this page about cut tags (http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=75) which explains all :-).
Welcome again! Yay!
Re: Hi!
PS: adding images is just HTML too, which means you have to host them on another site. I still use my old BT one for mine.

Feel free to use any of my icons, btw! If you have any requests I'd be happy to make some more. Spread the Vila love!

BTW what they don't make very clear at all is how to post to a different journal (e.g., to make a new post in a community instead of just replying to one). You have to be logged in (and you can log in FOREVER, which I did recently...it saves a lot of trouble), but then when you hit Options you'll get a drop-down box of all the places you're authorized to post, and then you just click on one.
