Fortunate and unfortunate events

I haven't got round to answering my secret character meme yet, sorry. I will, but first an update which might explain why.

First the good

Tessa's limp is much better, so I think she'll recover as well as Claudia did when she had a similar thing. She's running around again and is extremely cuddly. I think she knows how worried we were about her.

I have my work puter back, or at least I have a new one with the old RAID in it, but one disc is unplugged because the motherboard can't recognise it. So I have all my data back, yay, but some applications are throwing tantrums and freezing. They made me a power user and I upgraded Firefox which fixed that, and may have to download the latest service pack for PowerPoint which froze constantly on Friday. I am so behind at work because of all the computer trouble (I basically lost three days) and I'm beginning to panic a bit because we have to put out a magazine in the next two weeks and I haven't even started on it.

And now the bad

I get hayfever which Beconase and other 'snorty drugs' as Greg calls them are pretty good at keeping away. However they're steroids and give me nose-bleeds and when I got one at a restaurant two weeks ago, I decided enough is enough and went cold turkey. I got worse and worse till this morning when I was sneezing almost constantly and could hardly open my itchy eyes, so I went out for lunch and bought a new non-steroid nasal spray and hope it works without any bad side-effects.

Today is my sister's birthday so I rang her, an act I usually put off because she talks for hours. She broke her arm really badly--both bones near the elbow--on Wednesday when she tripped on a doorstop thingy coming out of an exam she was supervising. She spent a night in hospital but discharged herself when she couldn't sleep due to the noise. Her arm's in temporary plaster while she waits for an operation next week to put the bones back where they're meant to be [whimpers] and she's on strong painkillers. That has to rank with [livejournal.com profile] astrogirl2's as a birthday from hell. At least ACC (Accident Compensation Corporation) will pay for it.

She told me that my brother (who is only in his late 20s) is now so deaf, he's become a virtual hermit. He had ear problems as a kid and also got a lot of hearing loss from when he was making furniture and painting cars, but it's now so bad he avoids social contact. I've e-mailed him since he doesn't answer the phone any more to point out that modern tech should help, and that the ACC should also cover it if it's proved to be work-related, but I have no idea what's going on since it's getting steadily worse. I hope he sees a specialist soon.

And I was complaining about my hayfever.

Wow. I'm starting to wonder if you have any cats, computers, or family members that are healthy. :( And, yeah, I think your sister beats me out on the Who Had the Worst Birthday challenge. Not that the prize is exactly worth having...

I hope the new nose-drugs work, at least.

Greg's healthy--he's as strong as an ox--and Vic's fine. My puter at home is in perfect condition except for one bright pixel on the monitor which doesn't bother me. But yeah, we've had a run of bad luck, but along with the good: winning on Delta Blues and just this last week getting a gift voucher from the local bookshop for filling out some form I forgot about. So it's a mixed bag. :-)

I suppose that's life, really... Full of ups and downs. Here's hoping you get a few more ups in the near future, though. It sounds like it's about time for them. :)

And I was complaining about my hayfever.
*hugs*

We are all our own little worlds, and we look up, and find that there is someone else worse off. Though that doesn't make us feel better, it just makes us feel ungrateful (and worried about the other person). Yep, I know it.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-11-25 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
[hugs back] Life is so subjective. :-P

The new snorty drug seems to be working but I see bleeding noses are one of the possible side effects. Sigh. I'll keep using it, and if I get one, I'll move to tablets.

*hugs* I hope things get better for everyone soon.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-11-25 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I'm sure it will. And hey, rumour has it that summer is coming.

[identity profile] jhall1.livejournal.com 2006-11-25 10:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yay for the good news, *hugs* for the bad. Didn't that fellow Shakespeare write something about troubles coming not as single spies but in battalions? :(

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-11-25 10:15 am (UTC)(link)
Like buses, yes. I hope there aren't any more due.

[identity profile] toft-froggy.livejournal.com 2006-11-25 10:29 am (UTC)(link)
That's awful about your brother. Deafness must be crippling when it comes to you late like that, and you don't have any skills in place to cope. I hope he's able to start dealing with it.

Re: hayfever - this is probably obvious, but have you tried antihistamines in capsule form? I never got on with nasal sprays either, but pills work just as well and are much less unpleasant.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-11-25 10:43 am (UTC)(link)
If my nose starts to bleed with this one, I'll get pills. I wasn't keen on more tablets though because I take enough meds already.

I'm hoping my brother can get some sort of hearing aid. I knew he was having trouble but not that it was that bad.

[identity profile] jaxomsride.livejournal.com 2006-11-25 05:11 pm (UTC)(link)
You could go to your doctor about the hay fever problem. If you are on other meds you really should anyway. Just they can even do injections now to combat hayfever.
Also as a palliative between sprays try throat and chest lozenges. "Jakemans throat andchest lozenges" are particularly good!

Glad Tessa is better!

The sprays work very well except for the bleeding noses. I feel fine today! I'll try tablets if this new one give me nosebleeds.

[identity profile] zoefruitcake.livejournal.com 2006-11-25 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Glad Tessa is getting better. The hayfever sounds awful though, poor you.
Somehow I've missed that you have a brother. I knew about your sister, but anyway, I hope he gets some help, he must feel very isolated :0(

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-11-25 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Tessa is scampering about again with just a slight limp! I'm so pleased. She's still on an anti-inflammatory though. My hayfever is heaps better after using the spray yesterday and this morning.

I suppose I don't mention my brother because we get on well but live in different cities. My sister lives down there too, but she succeeds in driving me crazy just over the phone. :-P

[identity profile] mistraltoes.livejournal.com 2006-11-27 11:34 am (UTC)(link)
Muchos hugs. I hate it when my friends are having a hard time. I hope there will be good things coming along for you and your family soon.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-11-27 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks. [hugs you back] How's your mother doing?

[identity profile] mistraltoes.livejournal.com 2006-12-01 11:24 am (UTC)(link)
Mom's doing well, thanks for asking. I finally saw her on Thanksgiving, and she looked much better than I expected.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-12-01 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
That's good to hear! I hope you'll see a lot more of her over Christmas. :-)
