Delta Blues

Hee! [points at icon which has had for a while] There's a horse called Delta Blues running in the Melbourne Cup tomorrow and I'm so tempted to put a small bet on it.

[Edit] And I did.

[Edit] And it won!

Oh good, I now know the name of one of the horses running. [And I wish you luck with the bet if you go ahead with it.] The draw was on the news, but you can see I've really paid attention to the process. A head full of Firefly doesn't help either...

I saw the horse names in the paper. I did put a bet on Delta Blues on my way home, and the Remuera Village TAB was every bit as seedy as I thought it would be. :-P I put $3 each way plus a quinella. I'll probably get nothing and it's a lottery betting by name, but I couldn't resist that one. And hey, the Melbourne Cup means (to me anyway) that summer's almost here.

Firefly! I enjoyed it despite not liking Westerns much. Wash is adorable, Kaylee is the cutest mechanic out, and Jayne is so funny even though I wouldn't want to know him.

As a family we always (all my life)put a small bet on two horses in the Grand National. As a jump race it's a lottery any way so we go by name for one and colours by the other. Beth and I have been going to the betting shop once a year ever since we were legal to do it(21 was the legal age when we started). It never ceases to amaze me just how seedy those places are and how any one can spend an afternoon there just betting and watching the races is beyond me.
You are a bit more adventurous than me , I never go above £1 each way. If you win I hope you won't let your new wealth spoil you%D.

$3 each way is the same as £1, so it wasn't that big a bet. :-)

The TAB was a depressing place. It almost smelled of failure.

I went to the races a couple of months ago for a charity event, and it wasn't seedy at all. We were upstairs in a big modern room with a glass wall and a brilliant view of the track, a delicious buffet, large TVs, complimentary champagne, and we didn't even have to leave to place bets. Very civilised. I'll probably go again next year when it's on.

My doggy friend Sue used to live at Newmarket and took me racing there on one visit. We were in the paddock but there was so much going on that I wasn't bored for a minute. Even placing a bet was interesting as the Tote was right next door to the weighing room and they had the doors open, I spent more time peering in there than betting. My mother's first memory was of being in a big field, being carried by Gran surrounded by loads of people and miles of white fences. It wasn't until she was grown up and visited Chepstow Racecourse that she realised that it had to be a racecourse she was on. It turns out that Gran was a racing fan in her younger days and went racing when ever she could. She was the one that started the National tradition, back in the days when betting was illegal. Mam was about 15 months old at the time.

The racecourse I went to is Ellerslie, a beautiful place with huge palm trees lining the drive. I've also been to the trots at Alexandra Park with my mother--she loved the trots--and Derby Day in Melbourne, the race that precedes the Melbourne Cup the weekend before. I went with friends who hire a spot every year where they set up a small marquee and picnic and entertain. All of those were a lot of fun, because the venues were beautiful and I was with friends. To me, most of it is social.

You won! Three cheers for Delta Blues :D

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-11-07 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
You and Sally won too! Yay for Vila!

A smell bet wouldn't hurt, I think Vila would approve :0)

[identity profile] zoefruitcake.livejournal.com 2006-11-06 09:28 am (UTC)(link)
or even a SMALL bet!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-11-06 09:53 am (UTC)(link)
He would! He'd enjoy the races (as opposed to the TAB). He'd come away with a profit, and probably not from betting. :-)

That's a lovely icon... and yes, I'm putting my {small} bet on Delta Blues as well. It's as good a way to pick as any...

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-11-06 11:06 am (UTC)(link)
Go us! Or at least, go Delta Blues!

Another lovely icon! He looks as if he's just done something naughty.

Knowing him, he invariably has :)

I've got three picked, much good it'll do me[/sarcasm], but Delta Blues is one of them. (The others are Geordieland and Tawqeet. Maybe they'll do well, as this year I'm not in a sweep and had to pick them myself for a change. Then again, what do I know about horses...?)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-11-07 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
I wasn't in a sweep either; we don't have enough employees to do that.

The last time I went to the races, a couple of months ago, I did pretty well, but it was a charity event and one of the racing club officials gave us tips. If I'd followed all of them, I'd have abut doubled my money, but as it was, I think I left with about $10 more than I started with, plus I had a great time with friends.

I now know how to read a horse's form, but my own picks were a bit spotty.

I JUST HEARD! I WON!

I got about $140 from $10! Dinner out with a bottle of wine on Vila!

Very, very well done. Beats my winnings from a two dollar bet, but hey, we won!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-11-07 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
What did you get? About $40? That's still not to be sneezed at!
