Gregs (and others) bearing gifts

Greg came home yesterday (yay!) and brought me:

Lego - no, not the sort you make up, but little 3cm-tall Star Wars characters just like those in the Star Wars Lego II Xbox game we have. There are 15 of 'em, but sadly no Han, Leia, or C3PO. They are not recommended for children below four but it's been ages since I swallowed a toy.

Jigsaw puzzles - two huge ones, two sepia which will be very challenging, and two spherical ones. Yes, spherical, not circular. The pieces are slightly curved plastic and I couldn't resist: I solved one straight away (Buzz Lightyear and lots of three-eyed aliens). You get a surprisingly strong sphere though the last couple of pieces are hard to put in without depressing an adjacent piece..
At work today, someone gave me some Lindt intense orange dark chocolate to thank me for something I did for them, and I got flowers a couple of months ago from someone else. This is such a great job; I rarely got thanked in any of my previous ones. It was usually nothing but users annoyed by bugs or improvements they saw as unnecessary change, and rude, abusive micro-managers. So I'm earning half as much; I'm a lot happier, I'm not on call 24-7, and I'm even doing some graphical design and publishing.

The lego and the jigsaw puzzles sound great (I've never heard of spherical puzzles though, heh).

It's nice that you're appreciated in your job (we all need that, but don't always get it).

I hardly ever got it, except from one very grateful user in one job who still misses me.

I hadn't heard of them either; a very cute and clever idea.

Yay for Greg! I'm glad he's back home safely. Have fun with your new toys! :-)

It's lovely to feel appreciated like that - I'm so pleased for you that you've managed to move there. IT can be a bit of a mug's game, really: so many people only notice things when they don't work or when they don't like them.

Exactly! I used to love the creative aspect of it (I used to be in R&D before the accountants quashed all that) but I'm being creative in different ways now. And it's lovely working with people who are friendly and pleasant and fun (it had been years) even if none of them understand SF or fannishness.

Yay! I'm so glad you're enjoying work. It does sound like a good place to work.

It is, even though we've had a series of hardware problems lately.

Three D puzzles have been around for a couple of years here, grown up Goddaughter Sarah has Big Ben done and on her shelves. Spherical ones have only just come out though. I saw globes of the world and the night sky on sale in our favourite shop in Fishguard this year.

I'm glad Greg backs safe enjoy playing with your toys.

Oh, I like the idea of the night sky, but that would be hard to do.

I love the sound of the jigsaws :0)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-10-05 10:12 am (UTC)(link)
Thought you might! :-)

The jigsaw sounds fascinating - do you have a makers name? 'cause it may be the Christmas present I was looking for for a friend.

And that intense orange chocolate {sigh} I don't even like dark chocolate, but I'll happily make an exception for it.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-10-05 10:12 am (UTC)(link)
It is indeed intense, and it has almond slivers in it too. YUM!

The maker is Japanese and on the box it says it's not to be sold outside Japan. :-P All the bumph is in Japanese too.

Linda said she's seen some in the UK (see her comment above) so she might be able to help.

So I'm earning half as much; I'm a lot happier,

I'd rather have the veges anyway! :-)

I'm so glad that you're still enjoying your job. And Yay for Greg being home.

I am, and it's lovely to have him back. :-D
