Bad weather, Lego, and Not Growing Up

So much for what I thought was early summer. We've had thunder storms (there's one rumbling away right now), heavy downpours, flooding, tornadoes (luckily not near me) and landslides which worry me because I live at the top of a hill. I think I'll go to bed with earplugs and cats for mutual comfort.

Greg called me from Singapore last night and said he's been shopping in the multi-floor IT shop (geek heaven) and in the Lego one. He saw an Imperial Star Destroyer in Lego for NZ$730 (!!!) so I looked it up on their site. They have several Star Wars collectibles for obscene prices, but what amused me was the Deathstar--its energy beams are made of Lego. Anyway, Greg said he's bought me some, not Star Wars though which is a relief; nothing's worth that sort of money.

Why no, I never grew up; why do you ask? Well, I'm only 40% adult according to the test [livejournal.com profile] communicator posted here. What tickled both of us is that Vila scores exactly zero; I've always thought of him as a big kid trying to cope with an adult world.

When I was clearing up yesterday I had a quick play in our crate ove lego :0)

Your icon is correct, BTW

I've become less enamoured of lego, not because I think it beneath me, but because it all seems overpriced to me, and over-specialized. If I want a model kit I can buy a proper model kit. Give me the generalized construction kits of old, where imagination was one's only limit!

Sorry, couldn't resist

They were dead in a week.

(snerk) Yes, I knew I was asking for it, but that was really the phrase I needed.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-10-02 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I agree. I'd rather make something up; I love those sites where they have. Have you seen the B7 Lego? I think it's on Hermit. There was a very cool exhibition of Lego art here a few years ago.

I haven't had a specialised kit before. I have no idea why Greg thought he'd buy it; it must be something fun. I hop it does something. I considered a train for him once but the price was ridiculous.

We've had thunder storms (there's one rumbling away right now), heavy downpours, flooding, tornadoes (luckily not near me) and landslides

So have we and all but the tornado has been within 4 miles of me. Thunderstorm right overhead, heavy downpours all this morning turning the hill into a river, flooding in Newbridge , two miles north of here and a landslide on the new stretch of the valley bypass at Pontllanfraith 4 miles north, with the road closed in both directions and 3 people hurt. The new embankments gave way. There was a waterspout at Brighton yesterday so tornadoes is the one thing I'm not worried about. At least I'm heading into winter and expect bad weather.

My grown up Goddaughter used to collect the Star Wars Lego but stopped when the ones she didn't have started costing more that £100 and that was years ago.

I'm now off to see how much child is still in me.

Yes, I saw about the Brighton waterspout. It wasn't far away from [livejournal.com profile] zoefruitcake. We get a few tornadoes through towns a year but so far we've been lucky: massive property in some cases but no one killed.

The weather has been dreadful, hasn't it. (grr). There's sunshine at the moment but I don't trust it to be there for long...

The lego Star Wars ships sound great (grin).

Yeah, I should go home now while it's not raining.

Did you see the prices though? And you can't make anything else with the pieces. It's bizarre; Lego used to be adaptable and reasonable. I wonder what Greg's bought me though. :-)

[identity profile] imhilien.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 09:11 am (UTC)(link)
I tried to avoid looking at the prices. :-( I like SW, but in the end not that much to spend those amounts of money. Yes, it's a shame you can't make anything else with the pieces.

Am looking forward to hearing what Greg brings back for you... :-)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 09:18 am (UTC)(link)
He's home tomorrow, yay! Not because of prezzies, but because I've been lonely. :-(

[identity profile] imhilien.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sure Greg will be glad to be home too. :-)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-10-04 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think he had much of a chance to get homesick, what with all the business meetings, techy stuff, geeky shopping, and trying out different restaurants. OTOH I was stuck at home with nothing to watch on the TiVos or DVDs because he wants to see it all too. I did watch a Rosemary and Thyme ep just for some fairly mindless entertainment one night--and it had Jan Chappell (B7's Cally) as a bitter old bitch. That progo has really bad plots; I never did find out how the body got in the well.

[identity profile] imhilien.livejournal.com 2006-10-04 08:47 am (UTC)(link)
It sounds like Greg was really busy! I've missed the latest eps of R & T recently, but it would have been nice to see 'Cally' again (even in that particular role).

A friend posted a screencap here (http://snowgrouse.livejournal.com/722300.html). She's right; Jan looked really old and sour (as was her character) but I saw pics of her last year with red hair and she looked amazing.

I read 'tornadoes' as 'tomatoes' for some reason. Bizarre weather.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
It seems to have calmed down now. And I do have tomatoes, waiting to be made into a fresh salsa. :-)
