Dambusters!

Peter Jackson has just announced he's remaking The Dam Busters. It's been a favourite film of his (and mine) since childhood and he plans to be faithful to the original but also add information and technical details that have come to light since they were declassified. We even have one of the Lancasters from Squadron 617 here, probably in Wanaka, to base the models on. This will be spectacular; yay!

Who will he get to act in it? I can't help but see Timothy West as Barnes Wallis even though he doesn't look at all like him. I suppose I've seen West play one too many eccentrics lately in Colditz (the recent miniseries) and New Tricks.

Hee. Greg says they'll have to rename Guy Gibson's dog, Nigger (who was apparently so named because he was a 'niggardly pup').

Oh yes, I can see Timothy West in it!
I have to admit to having a soft spot for that film, although I've not seen it for a very long time

I have it on DVD; I bought a collection of my favourite old B&W British war films recently. I adored them as a teenager.

Speaking of which, have you seen 'Ice Cold in Alex'? Brilliant.

I do believe the dog's already been renamed in subtitles, where he's Trigger and in some danger of being confused with a horse.

Hah! I'll have to check the subtitles on my DVD!

I've read that Nigger was once a fairly common name in the US for a dog, especially a black one. *wince*

I've only ever heard it in that film. No one would get away with it here, even in the 1940s.

Oh, that would be cool!

I'm very much looking forward to it!

We seem to be in danger of reaching the point where the only films being made are remakes. The original film was the first "grown up" film that I was ever taken to the cinema to see. Before that, I'd only seen various Disneys. I must have been about eight.

Timothy West is brilliant. I especially remember a TV play in which he toom the part of Thomas Beecham. (I've been spending too much time writing stuff for Wikipedia - I nearly put [[Thomas Beecham]].)

I agree, and many of the remakes have been very substandard. I think this one will be great though: I have faith in Jackson, he loves the original, and I'd like to see the unclassified additions. E.g. the bomb was cylindrical, not spherical.

You write for the Wikipedia? Which subjects? I've uploaded an image or two and I keep thinking I should get round to giving Michael Keating a decent entry.

Cricket! And weathery weather! Greg would get on so well with you! We have a weather station on our roof which saves data to his PC, and we both enjoy cricket.

Do you know [livejournal.com profile] kalypso_v? She's a big fan, esp of test and county cricket.

I like WWII-era films, though I haven't seen 'The Dam Busters'. I will definitely go and see Peter's version. Jolly good show! :-p
