That is beautiful, doubly so because it reminds me of my favourite ceramics artist Clarice Cliff. I would love to have that design on a plate on my wall.
Flattery indeed! I haven't seen much of her stuff but I love it. Actually this is another go at a simple beach scene after trying two on ceramics last summer (http://pics.livejournal.com/vilakins/pic/000qkyb2)) which had disappointing results (that's meant to be a pohutukawa in the right hand one). It's very hard to get the paints to come out deep and rich enough. However there are ceramic pointing places here in Auckland so I could have another go.
I remember those, I fell in love with the cats then. You are right the ceramic of the beach doesn't have the impact of your sketch.
There is surprisingly little Clarice Cliff on Google images and they are mostly her Bizarre range which is not the range I'm thinking of. She did a wonderful range of landscapes which is where your sketch fits.
Very nice! I particularly like the dark brown below the green bits of the tree. Really works well to add depth. And the way you've done the ocean provides a remarkable illusion of motion.

I made mine as a Christmas/summer themed icon. But all I did was chop a bit out of someone else's photo.
I should get myself a southern rata one, strictly speaking.
