For [livejournal.com profile] trixieleitz's birthday (a day late), a belly dancer!

My NaArMaMo Gallery is here.

Hey, it looks like a brunette Jenna!:)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-08-04 10:06 am (UTC)(link)
I did think of her hair when I was drawing it.

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2006-08-04 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I kept thinking she looked familiar, although I don't know if it was Jenna I was thinking of... :)

Thank you! I love the effect on her pantaloons.

Gauziness! I'm glad you like it. :-)

It's impressive!

Thank you! It was done while I was recovering from a migraine too. Overwork. Fridays are always very fraught and this one was worse than usual. :-P

What's she holding in her left hand?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-08-04 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
One of those clicky clacky things like a castanet. [livejournal.com profile] trixieleitz would know the correct word for them.

[identity profile] reapermum.livejournal.com 2006-08-04 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I wondered if it was something like that, but thought I might be confusing it with flamenco.

There are castanets, which are wooden things played by flamenco dancers, and finger cymbals (aka zills (Turkish) or sagat (Arabic)) which are metallic things played by bellydancers :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-08-05 10:34 am (UTC)(link)
Zills! That was the word I think I was told once!

Um, sorry, different Zil ;)

Is that an ocean of spit in your icon?

Depends on your opinion of the South Pacific ;)

Nah. Wrong part of the Earth's anatomy...

...oh, yes, and qarqabas (which can be transliterated in about a million different ways) which are different again, but are metal castanet-y cymbal thingies and come from North Africa. But you don't see those so often unless you're actually specifically into North African styles.

Cute! I really like her expression.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-08-04 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
She was meant to be smiling more but I quite liked that look so I left it. :-)

[identity profile] jhall1.livejournal.com 2006-08-04 06:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Nice. She looks rather pissed off, though. :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-08-04 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
It's her 'keep your hands off or you get whacked with the clicky-clacky thing' look.

[identity profile] scaratch.livejournal.com 2006-08-04 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Cute. I think the clicky-clacky thing is called a castanet.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-08-04 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
It is in Spain, but there's a Middle-Eastern word too. I am woefully ignorant, though I've had a go at using them. :-)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-08-05 10:59 am (UTC)(link)
Ah hah! [livejournal.com profile] trixieleitz, the belly dancer friend I drew this for, tells me that:
There are castanets, which are wooden things played by flamenco dancers, and finger cymbals (aka zills (Turkish) or sagat (Arabic)) which are metallic things played by belly dancers :)
Zill was the word I couldn't remember. :-P

[identity profile] scaratch.livejournal.com 2006-08-05 11:49 am (UTC)(link)
I see! Thanks for the update. Always good to learn something new :)

[identity profile] daiseechain.livejournal.com 2006-08-05 09:33 am (UTC)(link)
Very nice. Love the colouring on the harem pants.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-08-05 10:31 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! It was an experiment that worked.
