One of those clicky clacky things like a castanet. trixieleitz would know the correct word for them.

I wondered if it was something like that, but thought I might be confusing it with flamenco.

There are castanets, which are wooden things played by flamenco dancers, and finger cymbals (aka zills (Turkish) or sagat (Arabic)) which are metallic things played by bellydancers :)

...oh, yes, and qarqabas (which can be transliterated in about a million different ways) which are different again, but are metal castanet-y cymbal thingies and come from North Africa. But you don't see those so often unless you're actually specifically into North African styles.

It is in Spain, but there's a Middle-Eastern word too. I am woefully ignorant, though I've had a go at using them. :-)
