20 questions

Gacked from [livejournal.com profile] astrogirl2's blog:

1. Grab the book nearest to you, turn to page 18 and find the 4th sentence.
"And Ingrey had no burning desire to rush this accursed naive girl to her earthly judgement either." It's from The Hallowed Hunt by Lois McMaster Bujold, which I'm reading and enjoying a lot, actually.

2. Stretch your left arm out as far as you can. What can you reach?

Nothing unless I lean over, then I can touch Tessa who's sitting in front of the heater.

3. What is the last thing you watched on TV?

Boston Legal, the ep where Denny Crane got married and divorced. I love Boston Legal.

4. Without looking, guess what time it is?

6pm?

5. Now look at the clock, what is the actual time?

5:55pm. Pretty close!

6. With the exception of the computer, what can you hear?

The little fan heater I have in here with me. It's about 16C despite that. :-(

7. When did you last step outside?

About an hour ago, when I put the paper recycling out.

8. Before you started this survey, what did you look at?

Eh? Lots of things. I've been awake for 11 hours.

9. What are you wearing?

White sweatpants, suede ug boots, black sweater, teal fleece.

10. Did you dream last night?

I did, very entertainingly, about zombies, so I've been inspired to write a zombie/B7 story. I'll post it to [livejournal.com profile] b7friday tonight.

11. When did you last laugh?

Probably less than an hour ago.

12. What is on the walls of the room you are in?

A batik hanging I bought in Indonesia; three Diane Vessey originals (before she got well-known and everywhere); an oil painting Greg bought from a guy with a bad sense of perspective who was selling round office buildings [rolls eyes and sighs]; a photo of my grandfather in his 20s looking extremely handsome; a photo of his sister, my great aunt, at 16 and very beautiful; a bright blue ceramic lizard.

13. Seen anything weird lately?

Yeah, a guy in the bank earlier this week who was singing not just in the queue but the whole time he wasn't actually talking to the cashier. His songs of choice were "Strangers in the Night" and "Doo wah diddy diddy dum diddy doo". I'm not sure whether he was happy, extremely egotistical, or suffers from a musical version of Tourette's.

14. What do you think of this quiz?
It's spelled correctly and isn't US-centric, so have a B. You lose points for the
five unanswerable questions at the end that I had to delete.

15. What is the last film you saw?

Cars! And it was a lot of fun.

16. If you became a multimillionaire overnight, what would you buy?

A house far from the main roads with double glazing, central heating, solar panels on the roof, and all new fittings so I don't have to redecorate or renovate. Of course I'd have to get it built because there's nothing like that available here.

17. Tell me something about you that I don't know.

I can raise my right eyebrow. And both of them together, of course.

18. If you could change one thing about the world, regardless of guilt or politics, what would you do?

Eliminate all bigotry, including tribal (IOW patriotism), gender and race, religious.

19. Do you like to dance?

Only alone so I can let myself go without ruining what rep I still have.

20. Would you ever consider living abroad?

Oh, yes! I've lived in the UK, Israel, and Germany, and would love to go back to Germany or Italy, or even the UK, but I'm not from the EEC. So I'd pick somewhere warm and dry in Australia.

What are ug boots? My first reaction was to go, "Aww, I'm sure they're not that bad!" But I guess that would be "ugh boots." :)

And yay for B7 zombies!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-06-29 06:51 am (UTC)(link)
They're bulky fleece-lined suede boots, and 'ug' is short for 'ugly'. Have a look here (http://www.newzealandsheepskins.com/uggboots.htm) for some pics, a description, and some history. Mine look like the ones on the far left. I see they spell it 'ugg' but I prefer 'ug', which they also mention.

Well, they not B7 zombies per se, but both are in the story. :-P

Oh! I've seen those kind of boots. I had no idea they were called that. They don't look especially ugly to me, but I think it can be safely said that I have no aesthetic sense at all when it comes to footwear. :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-06-29 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think they're ugly either, but that's what they're called. They're perfect for round the house in winter, inside and out, though I suspect employers would frown on them. [looks at boots] Mine are made by Canterbury, so the ones on the left are indeed mine!

Good. I guess the rest of the book must be better than the quoted rather clunky and over-adjectival sentence. :)

If they ever decide to relaunch TOS, and want someone to play the part of Spock, you're obviously the person. :)

And I can do the Vulcan salute too! With either hand!

The one thing I have to get past with Bujold's fantasy books is the pseudo-archaic prose and dialogue which I objected to in another post. No one seemed to agree however.

And I can do the Vulcan salute too! With either hand!

How about with both at once? :)

I haven't read any Bujold but, based on the quoted sentence, I suspect that if I had I would have agreed with you.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-06-29 10:28 am (UTC)(link)
How about with both at once?

Yep!

I much prefer her hard SF books (the Vorkosigan series) but she does write engaging characters and interesting worlds. She has some odd quirks like said-phobia, people use their hands a lot, and their lips ripple (what the hell does that mean?) but I'd rather read her than the many authors who can't breathe life into their characters.

Thanks for that link -- I'm actually looking for a replacement pair of ugg boots (which I wear around the house in winter) because my cheap imitation ones (though very nice black leather on the outside) are falling to bits. I went and got some lined moccasins as a replacement, but I realized yesterday morning that these were what was causing my plantar fasciitis to flare up! So I need some proper ugg boots. But I'm wary of buying footwear online, because how can I figure out if they will fit?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-06-30 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Ugg boots are fairly forgiving because the fleece moulds to your feet. I can't remember where I bought mine now, but I have bought on-line when I'm sure that the size is what I think it is (there are at least 3 systems). You could do a search for Australia only; perhaps you have a retailer near you. I did buy my previous ones at a shop.

Well, I went ahead and ordered, after finding more info on the site and measuring my feet as they said. I hope it's okay, the size they put my feet in is actually a size smaller than my usual. (twitches nervously) Ah well, if they're too small, I can give them to my mother...

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-06-30 09:30 am (UTC)(link)
I hope they work out. They do get bigger on your feet due to the fleecy insides compressing; mine could do with being a size smaller now. If you measured and that's the size they recommended, I'm sure it will be right.
