Powerless again

The power's been out for most of the day, over most of Auckland and about a quarter of the North Island (down to Hamilton). We just got it back here at work, just before I'm due to go home, but it isn't on there. I know, because Greg's there because 1) he couldn't work without power and 2) we were worried the burglars might take advantage of the outage to come back for more, even though our alarm has an excellent battery backup.

I'm going home soon, so if people don't hear from me for a while, it's because we're still blacked out. I was looking forward to a games evening tonight too; I hope it--and the power--are still on.

[Edit] It's back. Yay. I can have dinner, a nice hot cup of tea, and go to my games evening. :-D And do some proper work tomorrow instead of reading Falling Free all day in the half-light.

Good luck with getting power back on. Hopefully, you won't lose perishables.

It's just come on again! I'm relieved, but worried it will happen again as we still have gale-force winds. They haven't fixed the primary problwm, but just rerouted power around it.

The fridge and freezer are OK because we didn't open them deliberately.

Glad to hear it's back on! Not having electricty sucks. You don't realize just how much of the stuff you do every day depends on it until it's gone. Here's hoping it stays up!

At least I had a cup of tea when I got home, made on my trusty little French camping gas ring that I took all round Europe. After the last power outage, we also have a gas lamp, but we didn't need that.

I'm glad I have a UPS. The lights flickered on and off several times this morning before going out while I was making my lunch to take to work, but my PC is fine. First thing I check--I know my priorities.

Hey, a blackout is bad enough, but a blackout with no tea is just insult added to injury. :) I'm rather glad I have a gast stove, myself. It means that that's at least one thing I don't have to worry about when the power goes out. (Which it does far too often.) And a UPS is indespensable!

Not that mine stays on for that long, just long enough for me to power down safely.

One of the women at work was bemoaning the fact that her stove's gas bottle (not everyone has access to piped gas here) had just run out.

Mine stays up long enough that if it only lasts a few minutes, I can just ride it out. Which is nice. Although it's really disconcerting when the computer suddenly goes off without warning, anyway, because a cat has stepped on the power button. But that's only happened to me a couple of times. :)

glad you've got it back x

So am I. I was worried it might be out for days.

[identity profile] imhilien.livejournal.com 2006-06-12 10:21 am (UTC)(link)
It was a dreadful day, wasn't it *sigh*. Of course, it had to happen on a Monday...

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-06-12 10:26 am (UTC)(link)
I couldn't even get out of my driveway till 9:30 when they had police at the dead lights moving traffic. And once I was at work, of course I couldn't do much but draft a pamphlet I'm designing because everything I needed was on the computer. I read most of the day and wished I could have a hot drink.

I'm glad I have a gust-buster umbrella; otherwise it would have blown inside-out. I've lost brollies that way.

How annoying for you to be delayed like that... it was a real waste of day for us all. Still, at least you got the chance to read at work so that's something. ;-)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-06-13 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
I took a book with me especially!

BTW did you see Rodney Hide making a fool of himself for charity on that dancing program? I admire his guts, and his 'Raw Hide' jacket was inspired. :-D

[identity profile] imhilien.livejournal.com 2006-06-13 09:06 am (UTC)(link)
That was probably good planning. :-)

I didn't see the show but I saw the actual clip of the 'drop' - ouch! But yes, I admire his guts too for appearing on national TV like that...

Glad the situation is improving. Wish I could chuck some of our excessive sunshine and heat at you...

[shivers and looks at the pouring rain outside] I'd love some! At least the winds have died down.

[identity profile] executrix.livejournal.com 2006-06-12 01:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, glad it wasn't worse, and that you never will need the gas lamp.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-06-12 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too! Unless I'm just camping of course.

[identity profile] daiseechain.livejournal.com 2006-06-12 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
It made the CNN ticker! I just saw it flash past twice, which is why I came to check that you're ok. Bit silly really. If you had no power, you wouldn't have been able to post... But I'm glad to hear it's mostly over.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-06-12 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
It is here, I'm glad to say. Some places in the South Island still have no power for a different reason: snow causing trees to fall on lines. :-( Our problem was high winds breaking a lightning-conductor line which fell across several others.
