Mostly good things

I was going to do a complaining post about how long it's taken the insurance company to replace the stolen TV and camera, but after Greg got on to them today, they admitted it was a bit slack. The TV is being delivered tomorrow. In the meantime we've been watching my small and ancient Phillips which I'd forgotten I even had, and which is strangely purple in one corner. :-(

The camera however they're still waiting to get from the supplier. Sigh. If they'd paid me the money, I could have bought one from Dick Smith the next day. At least they've paid out for our DVDs and game, though it was only $50 after subtracting the excess. I ordered replacements and also Red Dwarf season 8, yay!

I just got home and found out I got out of jury duty! [dances] My employer wrote a letter stating that they'd have to employ someone else to do my work while I was away and the replacement would barely have time to figure out what they were doing, so it would severely inconvenience them. The Justice Department said I'm exempted this time but may be forced to do it next time. I just hope that's years away.

As for my job, I'm finally pretty much up to speed and having fun improving the way things are done. When I applied, I claimed to know MS Publisher (hey, MS bloatware is amazingly easy to pick up) and now I'm the acknowledged expert there. Hee.

And it's a long weekend (due to NZ celebrating the Queen's birthday on a day that isn't), and the weather is actually good: cold, clear, calm, and sunny. I hope it stays that way.

In the spare room I've still got my white Sony Trinitron from Christmas 1981. The picture has been beautiful shades of green since about 1988.

Hee. My Phillips is newer than that, but pretty much uni-student-flat.

If you press the AV button twice on the little set I have upstairs in my office, the picture goes mostly black and white with a touch of sepia, and the cricket pitch is light purple.

I suppose you can pretend you're watching a 50s test match. :-)

*sigh* Well, I hope the TV turns up as promised! You wonder what can be taking so long with the camera, though...

Good news on the jury duty! It might not be so bad, if the case were easy and non-upsetting - but I guess that the reason for having a jury is that it probably *isn't*. That's a relief.

Enjoy your long weekend!

It's really bad timing too: I'm just getting a real grip on my job and going away for two weeks right when we're involved in a big art show would make things hard for more people than me.

Yikes, I can imagine it would be awkward. I think there's probably never a good time to be yanked out of your job for two weeks, but that would have been particularly bad.

Yeah, maybe in a few months I might have things running so smoothly that I can let things tick over for two weeks. Well, I'll have to when I'm on holiday. It's been particularly bad for them because they had one person leave last year, then her replacement in April with no notice, and she'd been unwell for weeks and letting things slip, understandably. It's taken me a month to work out what she'd done and not done, and sort it all out.

I must say, this job isn't boring. I don't even get the chance to check LJ. This is however good, I hate sitting around bored.

Oh, and the TV just arrived. And we still haven't got any extra security. Matrix haven't got round to fitting the glass-break alarm and it seems the standard bolts don't fit our windows (aluminium in wooden frames). Greg's going to look for some today and pack them out so they clear the fitting. Whatever happened to those old dogleg bolts you see in old houses? We also need a deadbolt on the back door, and I'd agree--I've broken in myself when I've locked myself out.

Hee. That makes four houses I've got into without a key: my mother's by removing louvres from her loo window; my neighbour's through a window when Tessa got in the same way and set their alarm off (I knew how to turn it off); my sister's also through a window when I arrived there and she was out and I needed the loo; and mine via the back door, using a branch pushed through the cat flap. Vila would be proud.
