Winter

It's winter already. It's cold and dark and miserable and wet, and there was thunder and hail before. I hate winter and it goes on for months.

And it's at times like this that I go to reach for the digital camera I no longer have. Vic came inside with muddy paws and leapt onto Greg who pushed him off with an outraged yell. I went out to see what was going on, and there was Vic sitting on the mat looking guilty, with a very clear trail of perfect muddy paw prints leading across the floor to him. It would have been such a cute photo.

Oh dear. Think of the good points of cold weather, though:

far fewer muffintops and huge men in shorts to look at
autumn leaves
conkers
that lovely bite frosty air has of a morning
no wasps
hot puddings with custard

... I shall stop now; I'm making myself nostalgic!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-05-13 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry, but that doesn't help me much. Only the first and fifth ones on that list apply here. Well, I could have puddings but I'm not really allowed much carb. I crave hot soup.

We don't really have autumn or spring as our natives are evergreen. Basically we just have summer and winter, both for longer than most people. :-( Winter's just grey and wet and soggy and dark, and everything's damp; we have to have a dehumidifier running at home (and I need one at work) and the lights on most days. I hate it. The one decent winter (with sun!) we had was a drought and we were bombarded with doom-laden messages about saving water. You can't win.

I need to buy a full-spectrum lamp somewhere. We get so little sun in winter, but do you think people acknowledge that and sell them here for SAD sufferers?

I just want to go to bed and sleep, and I should be catching up with my writing.

Hell's bells, no autumn leaves, frosty mornings or conkers? That's cruel. I sympathise.

You do get snow, though?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-05-13 07:38 am (UTC)(link)
Not in Auckland! Not unless you drive south and climb a mountain. Why d'you think I hate winter? It should be renamed 'the big wet'.

Some cities further south get occasional snow, and it's so cold right now, I'm sure they will.

Autumn leaves will depend on what people have planted nearby. Frosty mornings do happen, but not as often as in cooler climes. Pity about the conkers - they might be interesting...

I would hate to live somewhere with no Autumn but Spring you can keep. I love the greening of the world after the monochrome of winter, and the flowers I great with pleasure but I suffer from tree pollen hay fever and the city staple tree, the London Plane is what sets it off. So lets swap places each year, you can have my spring and I'll put up with your early winter%).

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-05-13 10:46 am (UTC)(link)
You get autumn colours in Christchurch where they have a lot of imported English trees, but not much here. I bet they're not so happy about them down in Christchurch come to think of it since they had big floods this week exacerbated by all the drains being blocked by leaves. :-(

Open mouth, insert foot. Sorry about the icon that came with the reply I just deleted. I'd forgotten it was quite that vehement.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-05-15 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't really notice. To answer that comment though:

It's bloody damp here too. The bread I had in the fridge to keep it fresh went mouldy. We get mildew round the windows, even with a dehumidifier running. Russian friends who have immigrated here say they haven't been so cold in their lives, without decent heating and insulation. One of them built a house to her own specs: double glazing, insulation, central heating, and she's happy now. I envy her so much.

Why don't we have double-glazing? Those people who do it should come out here to a virgin market.

The dampness is the real problem as it's not that cold in temperature. I used to live in Germany and I loved the winters there: icy, freezing, and so dry your clothes could keep you warm.

Vic's a lovely cat, though!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-05-13 10:44 am (UTC)(link)
He's very photogenic. :-) And what's the name of the cute guy in your icon?

[identity profile] hafren.livejournal.com 2006-05-13 12:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Tinker. He doesn't look 16, does he?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-05-13 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
He doesn't! My Claudia is 15 and Tessa is 13. Vic's a mere youth at 6.

hot chocolate.

I had a cappuccino. Greg's good at those. :-)

I know I hate that prospect, when the weather sets in, and you know it's going to be like that for ages. Do you ever get the clear, sunny winter days that we sometimes get here? I hope there'll at least be some of those to help.

Such a pain about the digital camera! Will you be able to get another small one on insurance - maybe one with zoom, and then still get yourself a bigger one after that, as you'd planned? It might at least mean that something good would come of the break-in.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-05-13 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you ever get the clear, sunny winter days that we sometimes get here?

Occasionally, and they're lovely. Today actually looks quite promising, but it's so changeable here, I could go to the supermarket and find it pouring when I come out half an hour later, which happened two weeks ago. I was soaked to the skin just going across the car park to my car. Rain here, BTW, is not rain as you know it. It's scarily heavy. And the winter before last, it rained at least once every day for four months. The best days are the very rare ones, maybe a handful a year, when there's a frost and it's bright and clear. Damn, but I miss German weather.

Will you be able to get another small one on insurance

We will, and it will have to be a better model as our one's no longer made. If it's good enough, it might well do me. :-)

[identity profile] glitterboy1.livejournal.com 2006-05-13 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Oww, I really don't think I could cope with weather like that. So much rain!

I hope that the camera *will* work out, then.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-05-13 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
So much rain!

Exactly. This is why I get so depressed in winter. I need sunshine.

[identity profile] jecono.livejournal.com 2006-05-13 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, sounds bad! I also love to watch seasons change and I am always looking forward to the next season to come. I wonder what my parents will tell me about the bad weather.

Aww, such a cute story about Vic!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-05-13 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
It would have been such a funny picture with those perfect paw prints in a curving line to him. :-)

Your parents will miss proper housing here. We don't have double glazing or decent insulation, and good heating is rare. I'm sitting by a fan heater. Today is sunny--at the moment-- but as I said to someone just above, that doesn't mean it won't be raining buckets in half an hour.

[identity profile] imhilien.livejournal.com 2006-05-14 10:30 am (UTC)(link)
It's been a ghastly weekend, hasn't it? Too much rain, thunder and hail for my liking *shivers*. I had about three layers of clothing on yesterday and still felt cold...

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-05-14 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too on all scores. I can't think of one thing I like about winter. My sister's house is surrounded by European trees; if I had those, I'd at least enjoy the extra light when they lose their leaves.

And lightning scares me. My grandfather was rolled over by a ball of lightning on the golf course, and a ball passed through a house in the next suburb once. [shivers] I've felt thunder actually shake the house; luckily not this time.

[identity profile] imhilien.livejournal.com 2006-05-15 09:55 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not really a fan of lightning either - I'm sorry to hear about your grandfather. The worse storm I've ever been in was in Sydney; I remember being under the blankets and clearly seeing the outline of my hands due to the continual lightning flashes (brr...).

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-05-15 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Eep! That's scary.

And sorry, my grandfather was fine! He was a young man at the time. When he saw the ball coming, he threw himself flat. It passed over him and he felt a huge tingling sensation, but the only damage was burns on his shirt where the metal clasps on his braces were. :-)

[identity profile] imhilien.livejournal.com 2006-05-16 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Phew, it's good your grandfather was able to escape it in time...

[identity profile] daiseechain.livejournal.com 2006-05-14 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
At least she didnt walk over his newspaper :-D

A good thing I recently realised about winter, is that it's easier to cover up, and use fabulous clothes to do so. So there's at least one redeeming feature to it.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-05-15 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's true. I go for lots of stained glass / jewel colours in winter.

Actually I did think up one thing I like about it: no flies. :-P
