New LJ features

LJ have just announced some excellent new features:

The userpic factory allows you to upload a JPG photo of any size, and easily crop and resize it to create a 100x100 pixel userpic, useful for those who don't have access to imaging software though I won't be using it.

The navigation strip is a feature you can turn on or off for every LJ you view, and for anyone vesting your LJ (or community). It puts a strip across the top with useful links: go have a look at my journal to see an example of your navigation bar. What's particularly cool is access to any friends filters you yourself have set up. Click on 'View my friends page' (i.e. your friends) and you'll see a drop-down list of any filters you've set up, plus journals only, communities only, syndicated feeds only. I bookmarked mine ages ago for easy access, but this is great; I can go straight to many of my favourite LJ functions.

And they've fixed memories. I thought they were working a lot better. :-)

Hmm, that navigation thing looks kind of cool. I may have to play around with it...

The navigation bar is great. I don't need so many bookmarks. BTW I set one up on [livejournal.com profile] b7friday and the other journals I mod. :-)

The userpic factory is a great idea but I actually found it quite hard to use - that click and drag thing always seems to run away with me and once it's gone wrong I can only change it by aborting the whole thing.

I figured eventually that "finction" was a typo for "function". Pity, I thought it might be a new type of ficathon where you write a fiction that's designed to serve some particular purpose...

Augh! Fixed. You mean stories with a Message? :-P

Stories with a Massage might be nice as well.

Thanks for that. I have enabled the navigation bar, I think it will be very useful

I like it!

Ah, I think that's OK. I originally interpreted it as meaning that I'd be able to see a drop-down list of any filters you'd set up, which I'd see as an intrusion of privacy. (As I think I've said before, I regard filters as a way of skipping journals I don't want to read without the possibility of offending by dropping them.) But since clicking on that (in an investigational spirit, not an intrusive one) just took me to my Default Friends page, I presume it means each person can see only their own list of filters, which would be fine. I might try it, then.

Yes, sorry I wasn't clear. The navigation bar completely relates to your own LJ and filters. It's really just another way of getting at some of the standard LJ menu.

Edited to make it clearer, I hope.

Finally! Theoretically, I have imaging software, but my poor wee Mac is now quite alzheimic, and can't cope with much of what I ask it to do :-(

It's a good feature; a few of my LJ friends who aren't very technical have already taken to it with pleasure. And I suppose you know you now have 132 icons!
