Androgynous geek

From [livejournal.com profile] communicator, the gender / geek test.

Androgynous Geek
You scored -10 genderpoints and 70 geekiness!
Your results show a score for genderpoints around zero, indicating you have both masculine and feminine tendancies (Above zero shows femininity, below zero masculinity). Your geekpoints suggest that you are something of a geek, though! I imagine you're quite happy about both of these scores, and you certainly know where to look on the internet to find like-minded people!

To be classed as a geek, you need 50 or more of my geek points. According to okcupid's own analysis of this test at the time of writing, this puts you in the top third of all test-takers; ie, 50 geekpoints makes you more geeky than 67% of test takers.

Yep, that sounds about right for me: short hair, makeup, mostly men's shirts with women's trousers (often cargo), and a knowledge of 'scary' computer languages. :-P

It says I'm an androgynous non-geek. I say their definition of "geek" is way too narrow. :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-04-05 11:11 am (UTC)(link)
I scored on computer languages and non-MS browsers I suspect. I can't imagine what else would put me ahead of you.

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2006-04-05 11:21 am (UTC)(link)
I got at least a point for languages, and I'm using Firefox. *pouts*

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-04-05 11:28 am (UTC)(link)
Since when have you been using Firefox? You weren't when I asked (coz of your ficathon icon). I do love tabs. I downloaded the latest version this week and was delighted that they fixed an annoying bug and added a new feature where external links can be forced into tabs. :-D

I have no idea how I scored so much higher than you then. :-P

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2006-04-05 11:32 am (UTC)(link)
I use it at work, where it's the available alternative to IE, which we all avoid like the plague. I use Netscape at home. I'm not switching at home because a) I've got Netscape set up how I want it, and b) people keep telling me I ought to, and I'm perverse and stubborn enough that that pretty much guarantees I won't. :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-04-05 11:36 am (UTC)(link)
Fair enough. I think Netscape has some features in common with Opera (which I also use). Do you have tabbing in it?

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2006-04-05 11:38 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. It's damn near indistinguisable from Firefox, except cosmetically.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-04-05 11:41 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Opera's very similar to Firefox too, and it and Netscape have a common ancestor. It even uses a Netscape alias when identifying itself to sites.

Apparently IE's adding tabs. Whoop-dee-doo. :-P

Off to bed now (after a tense ep of Lost, eep.

I got -35 / 42, which makes me a male non-geek apparently.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-04-05 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd have definitely taken you for a geek with your extensive knowledge of SF.

Yeah, but he's not a COMPUTER geek, which is what the test checks for.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-04-05 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Which is stupid as trainspotters are geeks (not that [livejournal.com profile] jhall1 is one to my knowledge) whether or not they know much about computers. I say there have been geeks in every age. Claudius was a history one and all those amateur botanists probably were too.

Oh I agree that no one kind of geek is a "Definitive" geek.

[identity profile] jhall1.livejournal.com 2006-04-06 08:42 am (UTC)(link)
To be fair, the introduction to the quiz did say that it was focussing on computer geekery.

It was a strange quiz, though. For instance, I'm not sure that a woman wearing a man's shirt quite equates to a man wearing a skirt (unless the man is Scottish).

You got less genderpoints and more geek points than me, other than that we're the same. :D More girly AND more geeky than me... sounds right. :D

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-04-05 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure how I got the girly points, maybe from wearing makeup? Hell, it's the only way I don't look like a brain-damaged short-haired Mona Lisa.

Whereas me and makeup are *so* not on speaking terms. I mean, when I feel like dressing up I'll put nail polish on (black, or bright delvian blue) and sometimes lipstick (the same colours) if I'm clubbing, and some sparkly eye shadow stuff - but that's if I'm going full hog goth glam whatever. And I havn't in ages.

And I tend to only wear skits to job interviews or when I've run out of pants.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-04-05 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
It's been years since I wore a skirt unless you count the short red tunic I wear under my Roman armour and the long dress and draped stola I wear to Roman feasts. :-P I don't wear skirts or dresses to interviews or work either.

I have sparse fair eyebrows and lashes and dark eyes and without makeup I look like two raisins were shoved into a piece of uncooked dough so makeup's part of being dressed to me, even if I live in shirts and jeans or cargoes. But I never wear nail polish; don't see the point.

*shrugs* between having dark brown hair, and pale pale skin, I really don't have that "problem". Come to think of it, there's a few physical particularities of mine that mean I'm pretty lazy, "girly routine" wise. The almost total lack of body hair, for example.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-04-05 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
You're lucky then. I wouldn't wear makeup if I didn't have to (like if I had eyebrows and lashes for a start). I never bother shaving though so I'm surprised I didn't come out a lot more male on that test.

[identity profile] lizamanynames.livejournal.com 2006-04-05 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm quite lucky, actually - I frequently thank my genetics, lucky stars, parents, god, whomever. There are a few things I really like about me, in addition to all the ones I don't.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-04-06 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
All of the things I like about me aren't physical. I like my intelligence and my sense of humour and other aspects of my mind and soul, but I could really do with a body transplant. :-(

*pets* well, FWIW, I think you're quite pretty.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-04-06 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
I'm good at makeup! :-) I'd settle for a transplant from the neck down though. I got a bad deal in genes.

Well, I can't speak for you from the waist down, I havn't seen you. But I'll attest for your very good hair and makeup skills.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-04-06 09:27 am (UTC)(link)
It's just that my body doesn't work well due to various manufacturing faults. I need drugs to keep functioning.

Ah, I know a few like that. sadly we can't send them back to the manufacturer and get a refund or an overhaul. :(

Another androgynous non-geek here. Shoulder-length hair and the pink striped shirt I'm wearing today aren't enough to reclaim my femininity, apparently. Of course, the not wearing war paint bit doesn't help the cause :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-04-06 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
They really should have had a question about whether you wear pink. Males are amusingly afraid of it.
ext_50187: (Default)

[identity profile] jomacmouse.livejournal.com 2006-04-06 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of 'em, yes. My brother doesn't seem to want anything to do with it. And I avoid it, mostly. Couldn't be helped today - I need to do some ironing, and the pink shirt was the last uncreased thing in the wardrobe...

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-04-06 09:28 am (UTC)(link)
I rather like a really strong bright pink, and that shade of red called coral.
ext_50187: (Default)

[identity profile] jomacmouse.livejournal.com 2006-04-06 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Perfectly good colours, too, but just not on me. I suffered a pink overload earlier in my life, you see :(

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-04-06 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
My mother dressed me in greens and browns and olives under the assumption I was an autumn (because of my red hair) but those muddy colours are the worst for me. I prefer clear, bright colours. When I wear my bright pink tunic or my coral shirt, I always get compliments. :-)
