I'm annoyed that Israel isn't included in the Middle East, because I am not untravelled there.

Where have you been in the Southern US?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-04-03 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Fort Lauderdale and Miami, on the way to the UK (by ship on a cheap youth deal; 6 weeks of unbelievable fun), to see the parents of the US high school student my parents were hosting at the time. Hee. They asked me if NZ had Christmas; I'd wondered why Lisa got a package of carols on tape.

Yeah, it's fairly rubbish. I've been to 2 different countries in Latin America and one in Africa, yet it says I'm untravelled in both those places (it only gives 4 choices for cities in Africa and declares you 'untravelled' if you haven't been to any of them!)

And I'd say Israel was most definitely in the Middle East, despite them being included in the Eurovision Song Contest.

And Wellington isn't on the list of NZ cities!

I think the general consensus is that it's a pretty stupid meme. Not that that stops me from propagating it. :)

It lists me, for instance, as only "somewhat traveled" in the American west. Actually, I've been all over the American west. I've just generally avoided the cities.

[identity profile] zoefruitcake.livejournal.com 2006-04-03 11:38 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. I've done a fair amount of travelling, just not to where they list!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-04-03 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
It's probably a lot more accurate if you check cities you've been near. I've generally gone into them because most of mine were European.

Strange though that they give Bali, Java, and Sumatra for Indonesia--two being huge islands--but have cities elsewhere. I think states and countries would be a lot better, though I admit wouldn't know which counties in the UK I've been to without consulting a map.

What's your icon? A NM mural? I must do some NZ ones now I have so many more to play with.

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2006-04-03 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I suspect it may have been written by someone less geographically knowledgable than they think they are. :)

The icon is of a famous petroglyph found at the Anasazi ruins in Chaco Canyon, NM. It's thought to be a depiction of the supernova that created the Crab Nebula. I've hiked up to see it; it's very cool. And it's the only NM-related icon I have. :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-04-03 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
That is cool!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-04-03 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
And Wellington's the capital! Yes, only four cities in Africa is appalling.

[identity profile] linda-joyce.livejournal.com 2006-04-03 12:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I am considered only moderately traveled in the UK because I have never been to Liverpool, Edingburgh, Leeds and Belfast. I don't travel to towns I explore the villages, I've been around all of these places. The rest is accurate for me though, I am not well traveled to the major cities in Europe, but I've been to a lot of tourist places, and I have never been to any of the other continents, unless Turkey counts?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-04-03 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it counts as Europe and Asia [Minor] because there's a bit in Europe and it also borders on Syria Irag amongst others. :-)

Maybe you should pick all the cities you've been close to; that would be a lot more accurate.

[identity profile] linda-joyce.livejournal.com 2006-04-03 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes it does, I am now extremely well traveled in Britain and well travelled in central and southern Europe which is about right. I'm still niggled that there are no cities from Wales though, I'm going back to see if I can contact the creator and suggest some.

I had the same problem with this meme. It's a cute idea, but not in the least accurate.

Giving countries or states rather than a handful of cities, esp for places like Africa and Europe, would work a lot better. Though I can see that some people would find it easier to remember cities they've been to or near; I certainly do for England. I'm not up on counties at all, though I've been to almost all of them.

I once met an American in Israel who asked me where Zurich was, when I said that was where I'd flown from.
"It's in Switzerland."
"Oh. Um, where's Switzerland?"
"You know Geneva, where they have the peace conferences?"
"Ah've bin to Geneva!"
"Well, you been to Switzerland!"
