Yet another Johari Window

Everyone seems to be doing this, so here you go, have another Johari Window. I've never heard of them, but they're supposed to show how others' perception of you differs from your own.

I found the selection rather odd though; a lot of words I'd choose for many of you just aren't there. Where are 'creative', 'artistic', and 'articulate' for example?

I also note there's a bug in the code. I picked six words for everyone I've done this for, but it looks as if changing your mind by deselecting a word and choosing another doesn't always work. :-(

Right, I'm off to bed.

Yeah. Especially the "creative", because that would cover various kinds of creativity. Oh well.

Yeah, I don't find it easy to pick words from that set anyway.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-02-11 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
And come to think of it, what about 'anxious', 'fearful', 'obsessive', 'enthusiastic', 'playful', 'analytical'...

[identity profile] jhall1.livejournal.com 2006-02-11 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, whereas they have near synonyms in other categories (brave/bold, clever/intelligent). They are rather lacking in negative qualities in particular (eg stupid, unfriendly), though admittedly it would be a bad sign if anyone from one's frioends' list selected any of those. :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-02-11 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
They probably left out the negative ones so that people would play nicely in the sandpit. ;-)

[identity profile] hafren.livejournal.com 2006-02-11 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I so don't get the things. They don't seem to me to show anything remotely surprising (so we don't see ourselves as others see us. There's a turn-up for the books!) Plus most us don't exactly "know" each other anyway. I'd be guessing in most cases.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-02-11 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I think it's flawed on many levels:
  • the choice of words (some concepts are missing)
  • you can only choose 5 or 6
  • the ones you choose for yourself may be affected by modesty or denial rather than a true reflection of what you think of yourself
  • the face we present to the world is always edited, but here it's much more so
  • For example, I know you're a brilliant writer, socialist, atheist, have a husband and at least one child, and live in Wales, but that's hardly a basis on which to form an impression about your personality.
[shrug] I dithered before I did it but decided to treat it as a game.

[identity profile] snowgrouse.livejournal.com 2006-02-11 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Also its starting point being that of stating your name when putting up opinions (even though I've seen people put "anonymous" in that box and rightly so) can lead to a lot of censorship on people's part, just in order to be nice and give compliments.

Would fill in yours (can't remember if I did it earlier though) but the damn thing is overloaded again. Still boggling at the lack of "creative".

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-02-11 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Also we present ourselves differently in different environments. Everyone here knows about my love of SF and B7 (not that 'obsessive' or 'enthusiastic' appear in the list), but no one at work would, and they wouldn't even see my sense of humour. People I used to act on stage with, or saw me do it, assumed I was a bubbly extrovert, and the people I met yesterday would probably say the same. And very few get to see my belief, desires, and fears, because I'm an introvert and keep those close. [pets them consolingly]

[identity profile] snowgrouse.livejournal.com 2006-02-11 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm surprised someone ticked extrovert on mine. I'm only bubbly and talkative and hug-attack-y with fans or Pagans because I know I share a kind of geekery and Think About Stuff. If I am in the company of strangers I knew very little about I'm considered so withdrawn it's rude already (more when I'm not in Finland since at least we have a culture where letting someone mind their own business is a sign of respect and if you talk to strangers you're a nutcase or drunk).

[identity profile] jhall1.livejournal.com 2006-02-11 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I suspect that a lot of us are far more extroverted on the Net than we are in real life. I know that applies to me.

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2006-02-11 04:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I looked at it, decided thae word set was utterly useless, and have been ignoring 'em every since.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-02-11 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure, but maye it's the set they used in the 50s? It seems odd because some are missing and others are quite close to each other; maybe meanings have changed since then.

Still, I think it is a lot more interesting and revealing than your average quiz meme. For some people, there's a lot of agreement as to what they are like, and few things in the "Facade" box, while I can think of at least one person who's done this, who has some things in her "Facade" box which... surprised me that she thought of herself that way. So I do think it's interesting, despite its limitations.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-02-12 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
It is, and I was surprised by the same thing in some cases. I'm a bit annoyed though that I chose six words for myself and only five showed up, so one of the 'blind spot' words shouldn't be there.
kerravonsen: Cally: Silent but sure (Cally-silent-but-sure)

[personal profile] kerravonsen 2006-02-12 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
I think the "Facade" box is more revealing, really, since, as you point out, since one can only pick a limited number of words, and what's more, quite a few are synonyms -- I mean, someone might pick "warm" when someone else picked "friendly" and the difference between the two hardly constitutes a "blind spot".

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-02-12 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
OTOH the facade box might just represent bits of you that don't show on LJ. I have 'logical' and 'adaptable' in mine because I use logic in my work and I learn new skills quickly, but people here wouldn't know that. I hope I don't come across as rigid or illogical though. :-P

Everyone seems to be doing this which certainly explains why the site is overloaded and I can't see what the fuss is about [mock pout]

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-02-12 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think you're missing much. It's flawed (see comments above) and a bit buggy.

Oh good. Is what happens when you aren't online at the time, of course. The only time I went online all weekend was to buy a game on Sunday morning, which is currently residing on the parental computer. It looks as though Mum will end up cursing me. She'll play it all week and use up time she wanted to be using to knit for the Royal Easter Show...

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-02-13 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
You have a cool mother then! My mother never got the point of games, or for that matter, most fiction.

But knitting for the Easter Show? Is she exhibiting?

[identity profile] jomacmouse.livejournal.com 2006-02-13 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
She's hoping to get a first prize for machine knitting, which she managed to do a few years ago. But there'll be some pretty stiff competition from all around Australia, so she'd at least settle for having her entries displayed. With so many entries all trying to catch the judges' eyes, even being displayed alongside the winners is an honourable result.
