Ficathon and GIP

I can't believe I signed up for the Blake's 7 Mills & Boon / Harlequin ficathon, but it looks like fun because parodies and 'turning the genre on its head' are fine. You look through the synopses for 102 stories and pick one to adapt (and reading those was scary in itself; Jarvik would seem to be the man of many M&B readers' dreams).

I'm basing mine on number 64, 'A Stolen Heart' - Kerr Avon's new business partner was not at all what he’d expected. Beautiful and outspoken, Valanne Ward was also the perfect image of a woman he thought was dead, a woman who had once ruled a star-spanning empire and had almost won his heart--and almost killed him. But was she a schemer out for revenge, or an innocent caught up in circumstances she didn’t understand?

Bwahahaha!

And in other news, I've been revamping some of my oldest icons now I'm gaining skills at Gimping. Most just needed tweaking but here are two that got a serious overhaul, and a Soolin.

danger worthwhile soolin

Not available because they're mine, but I'm feeling confident enough to make some more if anyone wants any, though there are much more accomplished people like [livejournal.com profile] snowgrouse and [livejournal.com profile] kerravonsen out there.

[Edit] I redid the Soolin one and I think it's sharper.

Heh. I admit, I sort of ran screaming from that particular ficathon concept, but that does sound like it could make for a very amusing story. :)

And those icons are fantastic! I mean, the old ones are good, but those are just... spiffy. :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-02-05 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
Ficathon: Yeah, I feared the mush, but I think I can have some fun with this: Servalan's heart leaping in her breast at the sight of Avon's cruel dark eyes and ruthless sculpted lips, haha.

Icons: Thank you! The old ones were dull. The 'worthwhile' one was all grey (I only cropped the screencap and whacked some text on it) and the 'danger' one was overwhelmed with yellow text and was the same pic as the one I used for this icon. :-P

I've still got a couple more to fix fuzzy text on, then I'll be fairly happy with them.

And I still have about 25 to go...

Lovely rainbow effect... sigh...

I did so much stuff to that background while playing. :-P Why, do you fancy something like that?

(scrutinizes background) I detect the hand of a plasma render with a "waves" filter at the least -- am I right?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-02-05 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty much! I have clouds in there too, I think, but I have no ides of the order I did them in, but I think waves was the last. Very good!

Oh, and I recently joined [livejournal.com profile] gimp_users, you might be interested in it.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-02-05 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I did know about it, and now I've experimented a bit more and am not quite so ignorant, I'll do that.

BTW I fixed my problem with outlining text by playing with the select options. :-)

Actually, [livejournal.com profile] gimp_users seems to be an equal mix of newbies asking questions, and people posting tips and tutorials.

BTW I fixed my problem with outlining text by playing with the select options.

What options did you change? I'm curious to find the answer to that puzzle.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-02-05 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the 'select by colour' option to feather edges was turned on, I don't know why. I'm getting less flailingly incompetent as I do more. :-P

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-02-08 07:28 am (UTC)(link)
I still have 26 icons to go till I fill my quota. I need a Blake one, which reminded me that I should revamp your one now that I have Gimp and aliased text, woohoo! So here it is:

Ooh, thank you! Will download/upload it when I get home. :)

It would seem awfully silly to respond to my own post to say "thank you" for fixing the pictures...so, Thank You For Fixing the Pictures!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-02-05 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
LOL, thanks! :-)

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2006-02-05 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
Very nice! I think my favorite is still 'Feeling Evil'. Servie just is so *perfectly* wicked there.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-02-05 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
She is! I'm quite pleased with that one because I took a while removing the background from behind her glittery net thing and it turned out well.

[identity profile] kerr-avon.livejournal.com 2006-02-05 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. You've captured her nicely.

[identity profile] vila-restal.livejournal.com 2006-02-05 11:45 am (UTC)(link)
[grin] Pity you never managed it!

[identity profile] kerr-avon.livejournal.com 2006-02-05 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, now, I would have, but she kept... distracting me.

[identity profile] imhilien.livejournal.com 2006-02-05 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
Have restrained myself from running away at the thought of a B7 / Mills & Boon style story only because Avon is involved (grin).

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-02-05 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
Avon! Servalan! And a guest appearance from Vila and Mary Soolin!

[identity profile] imhilien.livejournal.com 2006-02-05 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
Squee!!111!!

[identity profile] hafren.livejournal.com 2006-02-05 07:16 am (UTC)(link)
The most fascinating thing so far has been finding out that the synopses on the Mills & Boon site are themselves semi-literate - "make's" with a greengrocer's apostrophe indeed...

[identity profile] sallymn.livejournal.com 2006-02-05 08:38 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, that sounds right.

And are any of the heroes named Lance? I believe it was for a long time the Hero's name of Choice...

[identity profile] kerr-avon.livejournal.com 2006-02-05 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
*grin* Several of the authors are surnamed 'Blake'. HMmmm...

Oh good, you're getting into GIMP!

though there are much more accomplished people like [info]snowgrouse and [info]kerravonsen out there.

(shuffles feet bashfully) Thank you.

But don't sell yourself short. (points at icon you made)

Though I think I wouldn't be half so accomplished if I hadn't had the spurring of [livejournal.com profile] tardis_icons to force me to keep on trying new things.

[identity profile] snowgrouse.livejournal.com 2006-02-05 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
You've got teh skillz too, keep going!:)

The last one looks a bit blurry with jpeg compression, did you save it as a jpeg? Some programs have really crappy compression settings as defaults for jpegs and getting it under 40 k can be difficult. I heartily recommend saving pics as .gifs or pngs for less blur:).

The Mills & Boon ficathon is going to be a blast. I just know it. 8-) Swooning Servie, muahhaha!

Doesn't look like it, it's a gif file. Perhaps the source image was blurry already. It looks like one of the publicity shots.

[identity profile] snowgrouse.livejournal.com 2006-02-05 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought the text looked a bit blurry, too. But then most of the publicity shots out there are of rather bad quality; either massive jpeg compression or Smart Blur gone mad...

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-02-05 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a gif. I made it from a scan of the S4 B7 cards I have. I sharpened it and overlaid it with a higher-contract layer, but yeah, it's still not quite right. I certainly didn't blur it. I think strands of her hair spreading over her shoulder looks blurry which adds to the effect. I might have another go. The Dayna one and the Vila stun one from the same cards (dome in PSE2) came out looking better which is odd.

(Reposted to show stun icon.)

Yeah, it can be hard when scanning in from printed media, because it's already gone through a number of stages to get there, and each one compromises the photo-quality to a degree.
