Blake's 7 ficathon story: Limiters

This is a pinch-hit (whatever that is) for the Blake's 7 ficathon. Poor [livejournal.com profile] hafren still didn't have a story two months later, so I said I'd write her one since she'd asked for any combination of Blake, Avon, Vila, and Gan, and some hurt/comfort. That sounded good to me.

I hope [livejournal.com profile] hafren doesn't mind that the person who was hurt isn't the one who needs the comfort.

Limiters

Oh brill! I don't know anyone who writes Vila better than this:

"I think it's called that if it doesn't hit anything vital," Gan said.

"Speak for yourself. All of me's vital to me."

I loved the interaction and interemotion (I know that word doesn't exist but I can't think of the one that does). And this bit of Gan:

Gan thought about this. So the two of them played the same game; it explained a lot. Not that he'd ever understand; it was much simpler just being nice to the people you liked.

Thoguh his end was a fitting one, I think B7 lost a lot when Gan died because he was the only one, as Vila said in Trial, who could cut through suspicion and deviousness to that simplicity.

Thanks - made my day.

I'm so glad you liked it! I agree about Gan. I'm very fond of him (not the least because he was a friend to Vila) and refuse to believe Alan Stevens and Fiona Moore's theory about him being a psychopath. I even wrote a story early on (A Good Team (http://www.farsight.net.nz/fiction/team.htm)) explaining the reasoning behind giving him a limiter then sending him to Cygnus Alpha. Nasty lot, the Federation.

Your story made me think about stun guns. We know the Feds could use them, cf Project Avalon, but is there any evidence that Liberator had them? It's awkward in that it would solve the limiter problem (and though Gan might not think of that, the others would). Also in that sometimes when they obviously didn't want to kill, using stun would have been safer than holding prisoners who can escape (cf S-L-D). On the other hand, the people they got Liberator from clearly did have that capability or something like it, as we se in Redemption.

[livejournal.com profile] astrogirl2 raised the same question. Since you have too, and you have some good points there, I'll change the story to say that Vila fiddled with his gun to put it on a low energy setting which would amount to the same thing.

In S4 I'm pretty sure Vila used the stun clips he and Dayna found on Scorpio.

"Pinch-hit," is, apparently, a baseball term. Being profoundly ignorant of pretty much anything involving sports, I really only know it from its metaphorical, non-baseball context. But, y'know, it's a useful word. :)

(Oh, and, btw, I'll answer your e-mail later, when I get a chance. I didn't have time before work, but I did want to put the story link up ASAP.)

[identity profile] snowgrouse.livejournal.com 2004-11-03 12:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I loved it. Thank you, Nico. Really improved my mood. You write them all so damn spot on:).

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2004-11-03 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! :-D

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2007-12-06 07:39 am (UTC)(link)
Vila gave him a sidelong look, wondering how to thank him. To do so outright would be embarrassing for them both. "Lucky for me you've improved your aim."

"Yes. However you're still in the habit of dropping guns, I see."

"I had a hole in me at the time," Vila said indignantly. "Tends to put a person off, that sort of thing. Makes me leak for a start."

You get these two so perfectly it hurts. Brilliant stuff, thank you.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-12-06 09:23 am (UTC)(link)
I love writing those two; they have such distinctive ways of talking.

And Terry Nation was right when he said they need each other to work really well and stipulated that they both had to survive in any sequel.

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2007-12-06 09:40 am (UTC)(link)
As new to this fandom as I am, I didn't know about that from Terry Nation--that makes me feel better, somehow. Either both alive or both dead. People frequently do the "A world without Blake isn't one in worth living" but it's funny--by the end of S4, I really think Vila meant more to Avon than Blake ever did/could have.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-12-06 09:54 am (UTC)(link)
And I think that's the key to why Avon kept pushing him away; he really didn't want to care so that it wouldn't hurt too much when he lost Vila as he had when he'd lost others.

I have to go to bed now; it's only an hour till Friday. :-P

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2007-12-06 10:02 am (UTC)(link)
Ahahahaha, oh time zone differences. It's 2am here. :)

Anyway, yes, I agree--Avon pushed Vila away so that he wouldnt' be hurt when the inevitable happened: Vila left, or died or was killed. And I think that was a bit of a comfort to Avon too: to be the one to kill Vila gave him control of when it would happen; when he'd be alone. He could stop waiting for the other shoe to drop, so to speak. And the guilt would be terrible, but perhaps not as bad as the guilt that he let someone else kill him.

Gah. G'night, you. I am glad to have found someone with the same mind-thoughts as me regarding these two.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-12-06 10:07 am (UTC)(link)
Me too!

I just went to see where you were and found your art. Aww at your Vila and Avon! I've done B7 art too, most of it on my site. [deploys Simpsons Vila icon]

Right, g'night!

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2007-12-06 10:12 am (UTC)(link)
A writer and an artist, how happy you have made me tonight!

I should go to bed too. It's tempting to stay up reading fic all night, but better to drag it out so I have more to look forward to in the morning, etc.

(And thanks on the art love--I'm so glad you like them! Your Simpson's ones are spot on--I only saw the LJ icons so far, but they were all instantly recognisable and hilarious. I will give it all a proper look eventually. ♥)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-12-06 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Then I'll have to update my art page this evening. I have some stuff I posted to LJ that needs to be there including Avon with his umbrage collection.

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2007-12-06 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, do let me know when you do. :D I really enjoyed the little pencil cartoons you did, in Vila's "diary." Very good cartoony likenesses!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-12-06 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
The Molesworth ones? I used to do Ronald Searle cartoons for friends at high school. :-D I did a lot of those for a month of art challenge when I was flailing about for subjects, and must load the B7 ones from this year.

Anyway, my art's in my LJ galleries (http://pics.livejournal.com/vilakins/), most of it in the two NaArMaMo ones.

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2007-12-06 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, yes, those. THey were great. I did a month of art challenges last year . . . not for any organization like NaArMaMo, but just because I wanted. I drew a picture of Tom Baker every day during the month of December last year, ahahahaha.

I will check out your LJ gallery shortly.

And now I shall ask if you have any Avon-Vila or Avon/Vila fic recs you could give me? I like your stuff a lot, so I trust that you'd like stuff similar to me and might have recs I'm just not finding.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-12-06 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I do, but I'm at work; I'll have a look when I get home. :-)

In the meantime, this one is wonderful: The Haunting of Haderon (http://community.livejournal.com/crack_van/477049.html). It took ages to come on line (I had it as a zine) and then someone else beat me to reccing it.

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2007-12-07 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Hooray thanks! I'll look forward to your recs when you get home then. And read this in the meantime, instead of doing stuff I ought to be. :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-12-06 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
And wow. I am so not up to your standard now I've had another look over breakfast. "We Three" is brilliant. 'll have to take a proper look this weekend.

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2007-12-06 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh dear, oh dear, that one isn't mine! (It is, however, amazing!) You must have been looking under "My Favorites." I've only done three pieces of B7 art (so far), two chibis and a pencil portrait of Avon. Those'll be under "My Gallery" or something.

*embarrassed* The "We Three" is by stratosmacca, who is very talented. You should definitely check her art out. (Though it has a sad lack of Vila in it.) Kilinka also has some great stuff.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-12-06 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw the pencil Avon too and was very impressed. The chibis are adorable! I also saw a picture of you in Captain Jack's coat in Trafalgar Square--magnificent--so I assumed all of those were yours.

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2007-12-06 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahahahaa, it's not really Jack's coat. It was modeled after the Tenth Doctor's, but is darker. But, thank you! You ought to put your lovely art on dA too! If just so I can favorite it all! :D There is not enough B7 art out there.

I hope to get to draw some more pieces before long, but I've been a bit busy. The chibis are easier thant he pencil stuff, anyway.

(Your icon is killing me, BTW)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-12-06 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Either way, it's a fabulous coat!

A friend made that and did a lot of very cute B7 ones a couple of years ago.

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2007-12-06 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee, I have a few of those cute "Hello" Doctor Who ones. :D

And thanks on the coat. :D
