Impotent rage

I want to do some severe physical damage to the bastards at sky tv (I can't bring myself to capitalise it).

They've cancelled SF Saturday.

No more Farscape. In fact, no more SF bar SG1 (no, not even Enterprise).

I don't believe it. This program isn't just the best SF on TV here, it bloody well has some of our NZ actors in it, yet we're not allowed to see it. These fuckwits might lack taste and intelligence, but have they no patriotism? No, of course not--this is an intelligent program, not 15 brutes in black on a rugby field.

I'd cancel my subscription if it wasn't for the Rialto channel (quality films) and UKTV (old but great British programs). Without them I'd have almost nothing left to watch.

Now I have to start ringing round to see if I can hire Farscape tapes or DVDs somewhere. They've treated it so badly here almost no-one watches it, so I'm not sanguine about my chances.

On top of that, my car's aircon has packed up in the middle of summer, and I live in the wrong timezone to play on [livejournal.com profile] b7_rpg during weekdays unless some kind American is insomniac enough to play with Vila.

Shit shit shit.

*Why* is sci-fi treated in such an offhand way? Why, why, why?

Sending major sympathy vibes your way for your horrible day!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2004-01-13 10:56 am (UTC)(link)
Because it's seen as being for kids and loser geeks probably. Thanks for the kind thoughts. I feel a little less isolated now.

:0(

That stinks. Really sorry for you. Are there enough disgruntled people to band together and kick up a fuss? Or is it pointless?

Re: :0(

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2004-01-13 10:31 am (UTC)(link)
I'd say it's pointless. Geeks have buying power, but I don't think there are enough of us. That's why they treat us like that, and why I said 'impotent' in the header.

It's the idiots people who watch reality TV they listen to. Sorry, feeling savage.

[identity profile] snowgrouse.livejournal.com 2004-01-13 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
POO!:( It's so, so crap.

And I'm probably on the RPG the same time as you, if we're lucky...

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2004-01-13 10:36 am (UTC)(link)
If we're lucky... [sigh] I get an hour or two when I get home (4:30-6am GMT) and maybe an hour or so before bed (10-11am GMT). Vila and Avon did swap a few insults last night.

BTW I found it very confusing that the post dates showed up as Monday, Tuesday, then Monday again.

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2004-01-13 08:04 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, no! :( They've really, truly cancelled it? They're not going to put any more on after this? Oh, god, does that mean you're not going to get to see the climax of Season 3? That's, that... inhuman.

Whatever you do, if they're not going to show it, buy, beg, borrow or steal a copy of the "Into the Lion's Den" 2-parter. It's one of the single best pieces of television ever. And I'm sure me saying that isn't helping. :(

They did at least show the second half of "Infinite Possibilities," right? And, oh, geez, what a note that is to leave you on...

If I could make PAL tapes, I'd send copies of the rest of the series to you in a heartbeat. As it is, I'm afraid all I can send are sympathies.

And to mention the fact that I'm on night shift next week, and so should actually be around and able to play with Vila, at least off and on, while I'm at work.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2004-01-13 10:50 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I saw the second half, and my prophecy come true about the John Aeryn loved. As soon as he got the wormhole knowledge I knew this was the ep where it would happen too. The last ep had some of those wonderful Stark moments I've seen in sigs; must watch it again.

And actually I can play NTSC tapes! :-D

But hold off till I see if I can get tapes or DVD here first. That's a lot of trouble for you to go to, but I'm feeling better already!

Vila would like to play with Stark--and the others too. He's a gregarious chap and pines. He did get in some banter with Avon last night. Sadly I only have brief times I can play--the Monday night (my time) trip to Lindor was naughty: we didn't eat till after 9 and poor neglected Greg was watching docos on Discovery with deep portentous present-tense narratives (they all sound like the same guy). Vila will be around in the weekends though.

Yes, give yourself a gold star! Although whether or not you've correctly predicted how things would go from there, I will not say. :)

Yes, it has some of my personal favorite Stark moments! I loved the way he handled that Scarran, for instance... and his interactions with Crais... and, well, he might not have had much dialog at the end, but he didn't need to have any... *sniff*

And actually I can play NTSC tapes! :-D

You can? Yay! My copies of the episodes are pretty crappy, (because my cable system is crappy and because most of them don't have the commercials edited out, and because one or two of them have annoying glitches where some idiot pushed the record button by mistake while playing them back), but they're much better than nothing.

But hold off till I see if I can get tapes or DVD here first. That's a lot of trouble for you to go to, but I'm feeling better already!

Hey, I've copied the whole series for two people already, and portions of it for a third. I'm more than happy to spread Farscape to the deprived fannish masses. (Note to self: need to get [livejournal.com profile] snowgrouse's copies started soon.)

Vila would like to play with Stark--and the others too. He's a gregarious chap and pines.

Poor Vila. *hugs Vila*

Sadly I only have brief times I can play--the Monday night (my time) trip to Lindor was naughty: we didn't eat till after 9 and poor neglected Greg was watching docos on Discovery with deep portentous present-tense narratives

Poor Greg, too, then! It was even naughtier from my POV, though... I stayed up long, long past my bedtime and was rather dysfunctional at work the next morning. It was worth it, though. :)

Vila will be around in the weekends though.

Unfortunately, I'm likely to be offline for largish portions of this coming weekend (Sat. & Sun., your time). Ironically, I'm supposed to be doing some RPGing. :)

It's not just sky that thinks SF doesn't count. I only have the 4 main terrestrial channels and they either move the schedules around so often you can't find them or put them on at ungodly hours of the night (like the re-runs of Red Dwarf at the moment) and then don't pick up on the next season because ' nobody watches them'.
My deepest sympathy re Farscape it was the best thing on TV since Babylon 5, best of luck finding DVDs or videos.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2004-01-13 10:52 am (UTC)(link)
The other channels only show SG1. Sky was the only place you could get any SF (Farscape, SG1, Andromeda, Enterprise, other Star Treks). I suppose I can hope some of them might pop up in the schedule elsewhere but I won't hold my breath.

I see [livejournal.com profile] astrogirl2 has already offered, but I'm going to offer as well :) I have all four seasons of Farscapeon R2 DVD, and can make PAL copies. One long-play tape will take about ten episodes, and postage UK-NZ looks sensible, from a poke about on the Royal Mail's website.

Shout if you'd like me to do this :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2004-01-13 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, two offers! That sounds excellent! I'd only need the last few eps of season 3 plus season 4, but I'll try to hire them here first. If I can, we'll copy them to a TiVo hard-drive and watch at our leisure; that's what we did when they took Voyager off for months.

Thank you so much! I may well get back to you if I don't have any luck here. I can buy seasons 1 and 2 I think (about $160 each, ouch). I'll look for 3 and 4 too, but I'm not sure they're out here yet. Mind you, I can play any region, so I may look around on eBay etc too.

Oh, yes, and cue Trixie's usual rant about the marginalisation of genre TV by broadcast execs more concerned with el cheapo sport *spit* and reality tv *ptoooi*, who soil their suits at the suggestion that any members of their target demographics might actually possess an imagination. A pox upon them all.

One good thing about living here is the (relatively) ready availability of mail-order DVDs, in a format that the studios might actually get around to cranking out at some point after they've saturated the North American market.

Oops, that last para was supposed to be a positive thing. This is why I try not to rant too much - these things have a way of getting away on me :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2004-01-13 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I totally agree. I had a very similar, and very loud rant last night.

And I may find something on the web if I look too; the US generally being cheaper than the UK, though I've bought from both.
