Ficlet meme response # 9 - Tresses

Here's my response to kerravonsen's second challenge in the ficlet meme:

Characters: Vila/Soolin
Title: Tresses
Dialogue: "I didn't know you were that creative."

Set PGP (after the last episode) so there are spoilers; 400 words.

Tresses

"There," Vila said. "Finished."

"Lovely." Soolin admired the way he had woven subtly-coloured silk ribbons seemingly at random through her hair.

Vila kissed her gently on the top of her head and rested his cheek briefly against it, closing his eyes. "Always wanted to touch your hair--and you--back on Xenon, but I was always afraid to. Wouldn't have let me, would you?" he said wistfully.

Soolin caught one of his hands and squeezed it. "Sometimes we don't know what we could have until we have it."

They had escaped the nightmare of the tracking gallery together, leaning on each other for support. Soolin had found them medical attention and navigated the dangers of Gauda Prime, and Vila had stolen what they'd needed, including the small trading ship they were now on. What had been mere companionship had grown during that time into friendship and had since deepened into something much more.

Soolin got up. "Your turn now."

"Hardly worth it, is it?" Vila sat down." I haven't got that much."

"You'd be surprised. I'm an expert too, you know." Soolin spun the chair away from the mirror. "No looking till I've finished."

Vila was surprised how long it took, the gentle combing and tugging. He heard a quiet snip. "Here," he said, mock-alarmed. "I'd like to keep what I've got!"

"Trust me. I know what I'm doing." Finally Soolin turned the chair back to the mirror. "There you are, handsome."

Oddly enough, Vila looked at her first, her beloved face above his, her eyes smiling warmly into his from the mirror. Then he saw what she'd done and gasped with admiration. "I knew you were good, but I didn't know you were that creative!"

She had divided and braided his hair into cornrows running from one side to the other, obscuring his receding temples, and had woven lengths of her own hair into the top ones to give him blond streaks. Over his left ear hung several slender golden braids, beaded at the ends.

"It's the height of fashion on some of the outer worlds," Soolin said. "But I can take it out if you like."

"No," Vila said softly. "Leave it. I like it."

He pulled Soolin down onto his lap and kissed her, making a fervent wish. He wanted their lives to stay forever like that, the gold and the brown strands intimately and tightly entwined.

I love this! Oh, it's wonderful. It could almost be a sequel to mine:D. I really would've wanted them to end up like this. It warms my heart!

I was just going to say that I'd love to see a picture of Vila in his new hairdo... I think you should draw it!

Anyway, Nico, this was lovely. V/So isn't a pairing that I've given a lot of thought to, but between you guys, you may well succeed in bringing me around to it...

Soolin seems to like Vila better (or dislike him less) than the others, and she's the one he calls for on being revived in Headhunter. I think she'd like him being so different from the hard types she's known.

Um, did you mean Snowgrouse or me to draw the picture? Grouse would be a much better bet.

No it wasn't. Cornrows from his right to left culminating in braided blonde hair extensions with beads on them. I might have a go but I'm not up to your or Spacefall's standard.

I still can't grasp it and I'm shite at drawing realistically, honest, especially when it comes to hairdos:). I'd love it if you did a drawing or a sketch to show us what you had in your mind's eye!:)

I was a bit surprised by this, I'd never EVER considered them in that way. Interesting...I shall have to think on that ;0)

Well, that's the nature of a challenge. :-) However I do see a strong possibility there if they were able to get to know each other better after GP.

Yes, I don't think they could get together in Season 4, because Soolin still has this sort of contempt thing going about Vila, probably influenced by Dayna's attitude especially. But as you point out here, they would actually make a very good "team in crime", with such complementary abilities.

In one sense, it's hard to see Soolin pairing up with anybody, but if she did, I think it would either be Avon or Vila, for different reasons. She and Avon are possibly too much alike, but that could also bring them together with understanding. And as you point out, Vila is different from the hard cases she's too used to, but also someone who isn't naieve. (He may be gullible, but he isn't naieve)

Soolin still has this sort of contempt thing going about Vila

I don't see Soolin as anywhere near as contemptuous of Vila as the others in S4, which almost counts as friendship. She doesn't think much of him at the start (and doesn't have much reason to) and she does make that "Typecasting" remark in 'Animals', but that could also be a comment on the others' perception of him. I can't think of many instances apart from that, and Vila even seems to be playing a game with her in that weird scene in 'Orbit' where he plays the fool. Dayna seems to take it at face value while Soolin is amused at the act. Vila even has a go at her which he'd never do with anyone else; that seems to imply ease between them.

Going by fics I've read, I'm not the only one who's wondered if they confided in each other off-screen and were at least allies. though probably not friends as such at that point.

Vila/Soolin are my OTP of season 4 Blakes 7.

OK, I'm only three episodes in, but still. I think their characters would work well together, Vila's lovely and intelligent and she can look after him. xD xD xD

Soolin/Avon. Too similar
Soolin/Tarrant. I think he's too gung-ho for her more considered approach.
Soolin/Dayna could work. Soolin could smack some sense into her.

So, Vila/Soolin it is. And This story illustrates beautifully how they could be vulnerable and sweet with each other. Awwwwwwwwww.

I'm watching Traitor now, and we're finding out about Pylene 50. But the dude in the wheelchair just making me think of Dalek-man. Grrrrrrr! Bring back Vila.

Vila did not shine in 'Traitor'. I wanted to shake him because all he said was basically "Let's cut and run!" I have however mined it for what happened to him as a kid: the torture he assumes Tarrant is undergoing is what he's experienced, and nerve damage accounts for the pins and needles he gets under stress (S1 or S2). It also explains his behaviour in this ep, plus being in a slow ship that has no real defence. All the same, not a good ep for him. Not a good season actually.

I know. This is what makes some B7 palatable. Vila's character seems to veer from clever hero to screeming child. Grrr. While he's no Tarrant, I did think the constant "lets run" was a bit OTT.

(Mind you, I'd be with him on that one.)

What, Servalan AGAIN???

Oh, yes. Servalan turns up like a bad penny in this season. I think it was a MAJOR mistake not to kill her off in 'Terminal', and she doesn't even bother to change her style in hair or dress which writers have to get around. [stab] IMO she had some sort of tracking system to account for her ubiquity, and I wrote one story in which it was implanted in Avon, and as for my PGP...

And the BBC official page regards Servalan as the star. Nothing against the very lovely Jacqueline Pearce, but aaaugh!

I had a sudden thought: don't read my Soolin/Vila stories yet as they will contain spoilers.

OK. I'm reading all the other stuff though, your Travis stories are very interesting.

And I have seen the last episode. That was one of Orac's nightmare. Yes, that is what it was. I haven't seen the rest of season 4 so I'm trying to avoid more spoilers, so thanks for the tip.

Also, I remember you did one called Blodd, threat and fears...? Anyways, very effective piece about why Vila went a bit woobie in Exbar (who wouldn't with travis growling at you)

And on that note, ever seen any stories with just Travis/Vila in them....?

'Blood, Threats, and Fears' is there along with Vila's E-mails and pretty much everything else I've done, the exceptions being a BSG crossover (Tarrant/Starbuck) and a Farscape story, both hosted elsewhere.

executrix has written every pairing you could think of and I know she's done Travis/Vila. It wasn't the only pairing in the story though, and I can't think of the title. I'll look on her site when I get home to see if it's there; it could also be on Hermit.

Thank you for this - I love the way you portrayed Stark. beautiful, broken, mad.... he really works well with the others here. Blakes 7/Farscape crossovers work well, as long as they don't get too fluffy (occupational hazard of crossovers)
