vilakins: (spring (kowhai))

Spring has sprung

... well and truly. (For those northerners who are puzzled that it's spring here, check out the effect of axial tilt on a planet's seasons.) Most of the blossom has gone from our garden by now because I am slack at doing the photo thing (and Flickr has changed how to embed photos, thanks very much, Flickr), but the garden still smells amazing. All photos taken 2-3 weeks ago, but there you go. Oh, and we do have kowhai in our garden, as shown in the icon. :-)

Blossom downhill

Our back garden, running down the hill. The steps by the wonky pagoda lead to another bit I call the secret garden.

Is this an apple tree by the steps? I'm not very up on that sort of thing. The big tree I thought might be cherry but now has red leaves (huh?)
I now think is plum.

Close-up if it helps

The secret garden, even more private and secluded than the rest. It'll be lovely and cool in there in summer.

The blossom below the fence is on Isis Street.

Uphill garden and cats

Jasmin was sitting beautifully like a Bast statue but crouched down as soon as I got my phone out. Typical.

Then the other two turned up. :-)

The pictures are lovely, so much blossom and pretty flowers. I love the way your cats are enjoying the sunshine :)

Very pretty. :-) I still have freesias scenting the air at my place.

What a beautiful, beautiful place! A garden that uplifts the soul - and the cats enjoy it too.

Happy Spring, Nico!! Gorgeous photos - thank you for posting!!

Are you enjoying autumn / fall? I'm hoping it will be much more colourful down here with lots of turning leaves unlike in Auckland.

It all looks so lovely! I'm glad you found such a good place.

The garden and view were top selling points!

Those blossom pictures are gorgeous. I am jealous of you living in such a beatiful place. The white blossom in your garden looks like a Cherry Plum (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cherry_plum). They are the first plum to blossom and first to ripen, are very wild in the UK and I used to eat them off bushes at Box Hill when I was looking for Muller's android. The pink one in Isis street is an almond; my favourite blossom tree and one which we had growing in Exeter Road in London. I haven't found one in Suffolk yet to photograph.

Edit: since Picasa Webalbums has gone defunct I can't embed a photo but have a link (https://get.google.com/albumarchive/114730461866414848067/album/AF1QipNQpTy5_t4gbMEXVHHMhXxs-t0WA6u9TDJhy_na/AF1QipMc9DKe3kZOZjoNJBJxzR3ucyjjjNX4p4ih9l6F) to some Exeter Road almond blossom.

You live in a beautiful place too, there by the sea!

If it's a cherry plum, then we'll be able to pick them as those trees are low enough. The one that now has red leaves though is far too tall. We also have a lemon tree uphill which delighted me.

Almonds! I hadn't thought of almonds - I wonder if it will have nuts. Here's a closeup I took (https://www.flickr.com/photos/vilakins/29932394255/sizes/o/): not as lush as yours.

I love everything about your new house and gardens! And, of course, the cats!!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2016-09-26 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
It's great on the outside - just soooo much work to be done inside: rewiring, relining walls, painting...

[identity profile] katriona-s.livejournal.com 2016-09-26 02:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh you have soooo beautiful gardens and the nicest views!! I really envy you! And your lovely cats must love their new playground :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2016-09-26 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
They're getting more at home. The neighbouring cats had taken it over but I think they're all working it out as they're spending more time outside.

Aw, it looks gorgeous! Thanks for sharing. :-)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2016-09-26 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm looking forward to summer - no mozzies here, I hear!

[identity profile] vjezkova.livejournal.com 2016-09-26 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh dear, what a beauty! The garden is magnificent, I hope it will bring you lots of joy and pleasure (not only work, but it goes hand in hand...). The flow of white blossoms, the hillside and your secret garden... But I am already in love with the stairs and the flowers and plants growing in every opening! Your house looks really perfect there!
And, of course, your cats! Ashely and Sebastian must have been curious and together with Jasmin, they must love the sunshine. Thank you for lovely pictures! Ehm...do you have a pohutukawa too, by any chance?:-)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2016-09-26 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
No pohutukawa - I was sad to hear they don't grow here. Instead there's southern rata (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metrosideros_umbellata) which is similar in its flower and when it's in bloom.

However our garden is sheltered and has the local micro-climate and if pohutukawas grow in the Oamaru Gardens below us, then they will here. I'll have to find out, then plant some. If not, then some rata!

[identity profile] vjezkova.livejournal.com 2016-09-27 07:43 am (UTC)(link)
Southern rata is really very similar!Beautiful!!! Oh dear, if you can, try to plant either rata or pohutukawa...and I will be happy to see it grow, if I may ask you for sharing.

[identity profile] san-valentine.livejournal.com 2016-09-26 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
That all looks lovely. I love flowering trees and a garden like that would make me very happy. You could saveand dry some of the petals as decorations or even confetti - I used cherry blossom confetti from the park at a friend's wedding.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2016-09-26 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
A lovely idea! I'm looking forward to summer when we can spend hours out there which I couldn't do in Auckland without covering myself in repellent. Apparently there are no mosquitoes here - joy!

Great icon!

[identity profile] nautile26.livejournal.com 2016-09-26 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Beautiful, I can almost smell the perfume from here!
The gardens here are a picture too, everything is in bloom. I love this time of year.
A wonderful part of having a new garden is all the discoveries you make as the year progresses. :)

[identity profile] jaxomsride.livejournal.com 2016-09-27 10:55 am (UTC)(link)
The blossoms are lovely. I suppose you will find out what trees they are more when the leaves and fruit come out. The secret garden looks a perfect place for a picnic.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2016-09-27 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
It does! And there's a level place before it where we can have the hammock. I'm told there are no mozzies here - bliss!
