Somewhat late update

My active reading lists have dwindled so much, I've consolidated all my LJ and DW people (non-community-or-feed) filters and even then they're pretty thin.

But then, I haven't been posting much either, partly because of that, and partly because I take ages to get round to cropping, resizing, and uploading the backlog photos I have planned to post. Maybe I'll work backwards from the most recent.

In the meantime:
  • Coolness: The weather's been dry (so not like Auckland) and the blossoms here have been stunning - we get four seasons, unlike the hot-and-wet and cold-and-wet of Auckland. ;-) And on Saturday night when we were on our way out for dinner, there was a huge orange blood moon over the sea, with wisps of cloud making black stripes, a tiger moon!
  • Victorian festival: coming up in November. My friend from way back who moved here this year too showed me all her Victorian gear, mostly made of old curtains, but I think I'll go for the Three Men in a Boat look with my striped blazer and a boater if I can find one online. I don't do dresses.
  • Writing: I haven't managed to do any writing or art, but come November I'll try to get back into the long fic of doom when picowrimo comes up. I did meet a pro writer who wants me to join an international writers' group which does a lot of e-publishing. Hmmm. I'd have to have an original novel idea that's not one of the ones I've run in my head for private entertainment as they're a bit derivative, dating from teenage years. And yeah, so not ready for that with all the problems here. Plus she's terrifyingly brilliant and confident, and a bit scary. But fascinating!
  • House: We still haven't unpacked completely, and with less storage than we had in Auckland, it's getting hard to figure out where things should go (and that includes Out). There's also a huge amount of work to do as only the two sun rooms can be painted right away; the rest of the walls need stripping and replastering at a guess, and it's hard to get people in to advise. At least now I have some recced names which might mean they'll actually show up and do  stuff. This is all up to me as Greg's away most of each week in Christchurch at a client site.
  • Klutziness: We went to Timaru to look at lighting because there aren't any lighting shops here, and that's what I was doing, looking up at the lights when I tripped over a stand. I hit the floor, bashing my knee and a finger, but the worst part was that my left show got ripped off without coming undone and at least one tow got broken. This has happened before. There's nothing to do but tape them together and put up with it but it's been almost a month now. :-( If I'm not careful and bang my foot or walk on uneven ground, it hurts.
Anyway. Various photos to come. [slopes off now to have a cup of tea and a read]

Hello!!! I've been really bad at keeping up with DW, but it's so nice to hear what you're up to! Sorry about your toe.

Yes, that's very much how I feel about the journals at present. There are a lot of things I want to tell everyone, and a lot of photos I want to post, but it all takes so much time when there's little to spare.

I hope your toes and your chances of getting some writing done improve.

Thanks from Abby (currently kneading my thighs) and me! it's our anniversary today so I'll try to take some photos. Meanwhile, here's one from a sunny morning last week.

Good to see an update from you and hear that things are going well (apart from the toe). I dislike facebook with a passion and have all but stopped posting there although I read family and friends timelines. Dreamwidth is fairly active for me, not like the old Brad days of LJ but there's plenty of posts, photos and conversation. I hope your toe recovers quickly!

I use FB Purity too but it was buggy for a while with me and caused all kinds of problems but it's been better recently. I have practically everything filtered out and it's also nice and clean :)

Oh poor vilakins' toe!
I totally relate to not doing dresses, but I do tend to make an exception for cosplay. Have fun!
As for the writers' group, hey, it's nice to be asked. She sounds enthusiastic at least.

Oww for the toe, good for the seasons.

For the walls, how about wallpaper? I don't know what you can get over there but here you can go mad with big, bold patterns or plain with a hint of texture that you can paint over. Our house is 104 years old and quite a bit of the wall plaster is original, some of it is held in place by wallpaper.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2016-09-19 09:02 am (UTC)(link)
The walls are already wallpapered and then painted over with a gloss paint. It's not done well, wrinkling in corners and not really hiding the unevenness of some walls, and lifting in places. I'll have to get some expert advice. Maybe after the worst of the problems are fixed, a textured wallpaper might disguise the rest. It would definitely be plain: I'm going to pale grey walls with white trim for elegance and extra light.

Oh no, gloss paint does not go well on wallpaper. It stops you getting the paper properly wet to strip the walls. I like the sound of pale gray and white.

Plus it looks horrible. I'm not looking forward to all the work and disruption, but we'll try to contain it by doing a room at a time.

Ouch! I hope your toe soon heals.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2016-09-19 09:15 am (UTC)(link)
Me too! I've broken them before, by stubbing, but this one is taking a long time. Maybe it was a worse break than usual, having the shoe ripped off.

OPuch, sounds painful. I hope it heals soon

It's getting better, but not enough for proper walks. Soon...

Sorry for your poor toe, this is no good. Be careful, dear.
Don´t worry, we know you are too busy . There is much to do in your new house! But I´m glad you like it there. Of course I can´t wait for the photos after you mentioned the blossoms and all.:-)
Shame on me, I haven´t posted the parcel yet, I will post about what is going on here ( changing the linoleum in the hall - eeeeee§*%@).
Good luck!!!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2016-09-19 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll try to post the first lot of photos today. It's so easy to take them, much harder to prepare and post!

So you're having renovations too - isn't it disruptive? We have new curtains in the bay window, and some new roller blinds to install, and the downstairs bathroom will get new vinyl this week or next. I look forward to photos of yours!

When I unpack the things I was going to send you months ago, I'll post those too!

[identity profile] jaxomsride.livejournal.com 2016-09-20 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Ouch! It sounds like you might have a sprain as well as a break. They always take longer to heal.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2016-09-20 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Probably, given the twisting of having the shoe ripped off. The sprained finger is usable but still hurts.

[identity profile] imhilien.livejournal.com 2016-09-20 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
Hope you feel better soon. *offers chocolate*

The Victorian festival sounds nice.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2016-09-20 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
[scoffs chocolate]

I've seen a friend's photos of the festival and it's quite a big deal, parades through town etc. Even so there are people here, including our neighbour Michael, who dress Victorian all year round. :-)

Oamaru keeps sounding cooler and cooler. :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2016-09-25 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
It is! Though for the last three days it's been wet and grey and Aucklandy so not much fun. A plus though is an excellent small cinema which always has lots on including art films.
