Cool (and cold) stuff

We're still unpacking and trying to organise where things go in a house with half the storage. This is complicated by like things not being packed with like, or even things which were on the same desk being packed together. I've found most of my computer gear and eventually the cables, but so far the rest eludes me. And as the study is full of unpacked boxes, there's nowhere to put my desk anyway. So the decluttering continues, and I thought I'd done a good job of that before we left. Now it's extreme ruthlessness time.

The house is lovely and sunny and warm which is a good thing as the pond down the hill is frozen and they're predicting snow! SNOW! Not since I lived in Germany have I seen snow in a town. Not that it'll stay long here by the sea. Greg is nervous that the power might go off so he's laid in lots of firewood. But then, fiddling with the fire has become a favourite pastime. The cats enjoy it too.

Cool things about Oamaru
  • The local supermarket has baristas and coffee cup holders in the trolleys.
  • Excellent cafes and restaurants.
  • The local cinema is small, but has four digital screens with leather loungers and sofas - we went to see Dough and were in a room that seated maybe 20. They do 3D too PLUS they have a steampunk Millennium Falcon built of found parts in the foyer. Next time I'm taking my phone to get a photo.
  • We were in the hardware store when a friend I've known since high school rushed up to me and hugged me. Was she on holiday here? No, she moved here in April. She'd been living in Dunedin and I hadn't seen her for a few years. SO COOL! We're already planning to do some of our comedy routines at an upcoming concert.
  • There's a newcomers' group who meet for coffee at the Opera House, games evenings, book club, and walks in the park below us. Everyone's super-friendly, like everyone else here, and though most come from elsewhere in the country, there are people from the US, Hungary, and Pakistan.
  • We went to the monthly games evening last night, taking Rummikub, a favourite Israeli game. The hosts have so many games, they fill four bookcases. I thought we were a bit OTT with about 20 games. My friend came too and it was huge fun with fun people - I'm so going again.
  • The medical practice I signed on with has four doctors, two of whom are Americans. The one I saw for a checkup last week turned up at the games evening - small town! The other one I don't know but she's Dr Liberatore. :-D
That all makes up for the small library which hardly has any SF and makes me sad because I'll have to go the ebook route which could get expensive.

Unpacking is a pain but it has to be done. Think how good you'll feel when everything has a home :)

Oamaru sounds just lovely :)

Delighted to have an update - I'd been wondering how you were getting on. Oamaru sounds very friendly, and how nice to find your old friend has arrived there too! I hope the snow is picturesque and no trouble.

Have the cats accepted their new home?

I hope Sebastian accepts Outdoors soon. I had a similar problem in Tabitha's final years; until then, she'd preferred the garden to the litter tray in the back porch, which Rosie used, but suddenly she decided she wanted an indoor toilet, either in the bath or a dark corner. I tried everything I could think of but in the end caved in and got a second litter tray for the bathroom. Then, of course, Rosie thought "An indoor litter tray! What a good idea!" and wouldn't use the one in the porch either. I didn't have the heart to make her go back to the porch when Tabitha died, so was stuck with a smelly bathroom until Rosie died. But fortunately Abby has accepted the porch tray! (Though she'll go in the garden if I hold the flap open for her, and occasionally on her own if I'm not there to do the job.) So I hope Sebastian realises that if the girls can go out so can he.

It's early days. I hope they'll sort themselves out and that you're able to cover the deck eventually.

they're predicting snow! SNOW!

Yeah, I remember the folks at one of the UK conventions I went to (can't remember which one) looking bemusedly at this crazy Australian who went outside on the Sunday morning of the convention to look at the snow which had fallen the night before. The last time I'd seen snow before then was when I was in the aptly-named Snowy Mountains... 8-)

We were in the hardware store when a friend I've known since high school rushed up to me and hugged me. Was she on holiday here? No, she moved here in April.

Wow, that's awesome!

We went to the monthly games evening last night, taking Rummikub, a favourite Israeli game.

Oh, it's been ages since I've played that.
Games nights! Hooray!
Lovely that the place is so friendly.

I'll have to go the ebook route which could get expensive.

Baen Books are pretty good; you can buy directly from them rather than going through a bookseller, and they have lots of different formats and they don't use DRM. And they have Bujold as one of their authors. Lots of win!

If you don't mind completely unknown authors, it might be worth checking out Smashwords too; their ebooks are generally very cheap, but I admit the only author there I could confidently recommend is Kristine Williams, whom I'm familiar with from Sentinel fandom.

Congrats on the new life in the (semi)Deep South. I miss the SI sometimes, I must admit.

It all - or almost all - sounds positively idyllic. I think I want to move there. :)

It's a very cool town! C'mon down!

[identity profile] snowgrouse.livejournal.com 2016-08-02 10:59 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, but it sounds wonderful! I'm so glad you're settling in nicely and are already feeling happy living there. *SQUISH* :3

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2016-08-02 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
[hugs] It's so great finding people I can relate to, like the games geeks!

Re settling in, we just need to get rid of all the boxes and clutter, then start renovating once we have the money from the Auckland sale. The colours are unfortunate: mustard, clashing shades of green, dark brown/purple, indeterminate muddy putty, horrible curtains which go with nothing... We're going to have pale grey walls with white trim and ceiling which will suit the age and style of the house and will go with all our brightly coloured stuff. The kitchen's all in in white because it's small and needs more light, but we're putting in a bright turquoise glass splashback round two sides for some fun colour.

Sometimes a friendly suggestion can get a library to strengthen a weak area in its holdings--especially if you can get other SF fans to make the same suggestion. I daresay there's a lot of Venn diagram overlap between people who enjoy tabletop gaming and people who like SF.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2016-08-02 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sure there is! Someone told me that if you request a book, they'll buy it. But I'd need to be asking for at least four a week with my reading habit. Maybe I'll go to the book group and see if they've found a solution for reading addicts.

[identity profile] executrix.livejournal.com 2016-08-02 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
My library not only makes ebooks available (much cheaper than buying them!) but has a room of used books on sale for 50 cents or $1 USD each. Maybe your library would be willing to put in a bookcase in an out-of-the-way spot where people can leave books/take books? The book group might also be able to do a whip-round and dispatch someone with some leisure time to the nearest large used bookstore and come back with a few cartons of books to be shared.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2016-08-02 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
This library (and the Auckland-wide one I still belong to) has ebooks, but not enough of them. Most of what I want to read doesn't come in an ebook, and the local selection doesn't have any SF at all. Yep, I've bought books from the library before, but not many as they're often genres I don't go for like romance.

That's a good idea about sharing, and I should also check out the second-hand bookshops as many offer cheaper prices if you're swapping a book back in. Books, like everything else, are very expensive in this country so libraries and second-hand are very popular.

[identity profile] executrix.livejournal.com 2016-08-02 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"Sell your books for $X in cash or $2X in credit" is a popular used bookstore model here, to the point that the patrons think of them more like video rental stores, where you keep something for a short while in exchange for a small fee.

Hmmm, if books are very expensive in NZ, some enterprising person could start a paid lending library a la Mudie's in the Victorian era.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2016-08-02 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess that's the same as buy a book for half-price if you're bringing one back. I'll have to check out what they do here. I used to go to a great one near a previous job where they had a whole room of SF.

[identity profile] vjezkova.livejournal.com 2016-08-02 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
What is most important - your new home andhouse sound like a great place to live in! Most of the items are pleasant things and that unpacking thing...well, hopefully it will be over soon too. It is very very good to hear mostly positive stuff form you!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2016-08-02 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
It will be great when it's over as it's stressful seeing all the boxes every day, not to mention all the unpacked ones waiting to be collected by the moving company. When it's all done and we've done some redecoration to make the place lighter and brighter, it'll start to feel more permanent and like home.

[identity profile] jaxomsride.livejournal.com 2016-08-02 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
It sounds a wonderful place!

A pity about the library being so short of SF, but you could see what the gaming geeks have on their shelves and arrange to swap?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2016-08-03 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
True; I'll have to see!

Oh, I'm glad - that does all sound like pretty cool stuff! Good luck with all the usual post-moving unpacking and updating and everything, too.

The library without any SF is very sad, though. You should maybe sometime try saying very nicely that you were rather shocked to find they had nothing for the whole genre. You can't be the only person in Oamaru who likes SF!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2016-08-03 09:19 am (UTC)(link)
They have some SF, just not a lot (e.g. no Vorkosigan saga), and no SF ebooks at all. After two hours of looking in their catalogue by authors in my reading list, I found one trilogy I had a rec for.

I have yet to check out the secondhand bookstore. They may be a good source and if they're like others I've used, may offer half price for a swap.

Sorry! I should have checked!

[identity profile] ultrapsychobrat.livejournal.com 2016-08-04 06:16 am (UTC)(link)
So glad to hear all is going well. Was worried about the cats, but all sounds good. You'll solve the book problem, I'm sure.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2016-08-04 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
The cats settled in fairly well, except that Sebastian has decided he likes being inside and unless I provide a litter tray, will use a pot plant. Yet in Auckland he wouldn't use litter on the few occasions he had to be locked in (the cone of shame) and used to sit by the cat door and howl. Generally I wouldn't see him during the day but he only goes out occasionally now.

If it snows tomorrow as they predict (not entirely sure I believe it) it'll be the first they've seen.

Cats + fire = contented kitties!

All sounds very positive

Oamaru sounds nice, especially the cinema. Hope the unpacking is all done. :)
