The return of my Sherlock speculation

We just watched the Sherlock special and it was as superb as I expected. Excellent stuff!

And it's led me to reanimate an old idea.

Before Moriarty turned up, I speculated that Molly was Moriarty because Sally is short for Sarah, Cally for Caroline, Tel for Terence, Molly for Mary - and perhaps Moriarty.

I gave up on this when a male Moriarty turned up, but now that Sherlock is saying that he is indeed dead, but that an invisible army - half the world - is at war and will win, I have to wonder if I was right after all. Is Molly behind the Moriarty we saw?

Not that I'll know till 2017 apparently. But I'd love to know what others think (so comments may well be spoilery).

It was a great special :)

I very much hoped that Molly would turn out to be the real Moriarty, but at this point, post-Reichenbach, I fear she isn't. I would have enjoyed her so much more. (But if it had to be a man, why couldn't it be a genuinely creepy villain like Magnussen, whom I was almost sorry to see die?)

Hang on a mo ... didn't I read somewhere that Molly was a character in the first episode (so we could get character clues about Sherlock) then they liked the actress/how her character worked and kept her around? I certainly think Mary is involved with the Moriarty thing but not sure how much. She's at least Mor(st)an, as in Moriarty's second in command and either Moriarty is going to pop back up in some form or even Mary may be him.

No matter what, poor John is going to suffer and I don't like gratuitous mental whumping for audience figures (all this strung-out speculation and the post-Series Two love of angst has made me step away from the show). I can't be sorry for Sherlock because he started all this himself by letting something he finds fun get out of control! It's also reminded me (again) not to get involved with a media text before it's run its course.

Edit: ugh, WHITE INPUT BOXES.

That's another good idea which matches women being a force, and would give Mary a way to die (as she did in the ACD stories, though how was never explained IIRC). Though she's had a baby in this version which will make it hard for John to continue with Sherlock unless he remarries ASAP (which I think Watson did, though all of that's a bit murky in ACD.

I didn't realise you'd left the fandom; a pity as you were so involved before. I'm not that much; I just enjoy it, like other shows.

It was the baby that finally broke the camel's back for me. I am sure something really nasty is going to happen so I backed away before it did ;-P

Like Downton Abbey - pregnancies meant death of babies, mothers, or fathers until the very last one, I was relieved to see. Julian Fellows must have had issues.

Did you see last night's episode, and if so did you have any thoughts on the graveyard? It looked more cluttered than St Woolos to me - or at any rate, the bits of St Woolos we've seen.

Not seen it but am reliably informed it was in Bristol (so it looked like Highgate apparently).

Thanks - it really had a very different feel - more crowded and citified - so I'm glad to know my instincts were right.

Oh, and the big victorian house was Tyntesfield in Somerset. Went there National Trusting looking for locations for Series Two / Dr Who. I realised I was in the wrong place PDQ and wheezed horribly from the damp and mould; the NT have only just got it so it needs work. Did recognise it in the trailers though - they are running out of locations near Cardiff so are spreading out. I seem to be stumbling on stuff in the wrong order but it's still fun.

Oh good! I did wonder about that - it looked very splendid.

I greatly enjoyed it, but it left me hopelessly confused about which bits were "real" and which bits were Sherlock's drug-fuelled imaginings.

It seems to me that the core of Moriarty's character is that he's a sadist who likes to manipulate people for his own amusement, and Molly doesn't seem anything like that.

I assumed all the past was his mind-palace plus the bit of the present that wasn't in the plane.

She could be cleverer than him and hide all that. Mary's also been suggested as the female behind Moriarty (see first comment) which is certainly believable. With the emphasis on us taking our rights, I have to wonder about it really being a woman. Plus Mary had better access to data than Mycroft and maybe she's also smarter. That would be a nice twist.

I am happy enough at the moment, the Special has just ended and I am overjoyed because out TV broadcast it !!!
Well, don´t expect any speculations from me...I just loved it.:-)

I wish more was coming sooner.

I also love the music - stirring and it doesn't drown out dialogue like in American shows.

[identity profile] vjezkova.livejournal.com 2016-01-03 08:11 am (UTC)(link)
Yes! The music is great - and that´s why I bought a soundtrack on Ebay:-)

I enjoyed the Special but was not surprised at the revelation about Moriarty's followers. The whole point of Sherlock faking his own death was to protect John after Moriarty shot himself. As for who is going to be the new villain of the piece, I suppose Moffat will reveal soon enough. To be honest, as real life has already shown followers persist even after the main perpetrator is dead, it is not even a new idea.

I'm not sure we really needed to visit Sherlock's Mind Palace to be told that. Though it was an interesting place to visit!

I'm afraid part of me rather enjoyed Victorian Sherlock with its nods to Jeremy Brett and Rathbone and of course the illustrations in the Strand magazine.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2016-01-03 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! Even if it was "all a dream", a trope I usually hate, it was a wonderful p[a]lace to visit.

[identity profile] zoefruitcake.livejournal.com 2016-01-05 01:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmm, an interesting idea...I like it!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2016-01-05 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I also like the idea someone else had that it's Mary. She does seem to have more and faster access to data than Mycroft. Why did they make her pregnant though? That's a really annoying complication and hardly ever adds anything to a narrative - usually the reverse. Speaking of which, at last Downton Abbey had one that ended happily with no one involved dying.
