The Force Awakens

IT WAS GREAT!

Just as fun and exciting as Episode IV which it references more than a few times. Though I really loved seeing old friends (especially Han Solo and Chewbacca - and even Admiral Ackbar and others!) the new characters are so likeable and interesting. I hope they explore their backstories in future films - and bring 'em on!

Right, I'm going back in the holidays to see it in 3D with imhilien. :-D

I'm glad to hear the new characters are interesting! I liked what I saw in the trailer - what a good idea to have a stormtrooper hero. We're planning to go at some point soon; we've been watching the original movies in preparation, but noped right out of the prequels.

I knew they were not great movies when they first came out, but having never watched them since I had forgotten HOW bad. I just could not sit through the many long, long, badly-written, badly-acted romance scenes in Attack of the Clones... especially knowing how disappointingly it ends.

"the new characters are so likeable and interesting"

No equivalent of Ja Ja Binks, then? That's a relief!

Absolutely not! There might have been if Lucas had created the characters. But as he didn't, we have an excellent and important female character.

I finally saw the film yesterday, and it's enormous fun. Yes, Rey is great. There was only one wince-worthy moment in the film, when they used "parsec" as a unit of time rather than of distance. :)

Yes, but they had to. In the original film, the Millennium Falcon is famous for doing "the Kessel run in 12 parsecs" and they just referenced that. It might have made sense if they used wormholes rather than hyperspace and Han was boasting about his navigation, but nope.

However this amused me (http://www.darthsanddroids.net/comics/darths0767.jpg). There was a really good one I saw on Facebook but I can't find it; I should have "liked" it. There's this though (http://img.memecdn.com/the-falcon-made-the-kessel-run-in-12-parsecs_o_1415311.jpg).

:)

I'm glad to see that it's not just me who's annoyed by it!

Pleased to hear this. I may end up writing an article on female heroines (and the adding of a new woman into the Starwars Franchise) so will probably have to go and see it at some point.

As I said above, Lucas not being involved meant we got an excellent female character.

With agency and LINES, even. Yeah, still not over my anger with the prequels.

Ok, so explain what was wrong with the sequels (so I can quote you- you're very good at explaining these things!)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2015-12-17 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
The prequels - episodes I, II, and III.

Clunky dialogue. Some of the best in the original 3 films was ad-libbed. Lucas couldn't write dialogue.

Lack of direction meant that the actors had to do their best with green screens and came across very flat. The kid who played little Anakin was the worst and he was good in other films.

Jar Jar Binks - where do I start? Just nope. Worse by far than the Ewoks and Lucas's kids were grown up. So why???

Marty-Sue young Anakin, created by the force. So smart and we're supposed to think he's wonderful, yet there wasn't any engagement with his character, due to the writing and the kid's flat delivery.

Anakin built C3PO? It had to be from a kitset; there are similar droids in the first ep, and a kid that age couldn't program the sophisticated language skills C3PO has.

Amidala | Padme was sort of interesting in the first film but after that had hardly any lines and was such a wimp she expired "of a broken heart". This infuriated me. And seriously, childbirth is "difficult and dangerous" with all that high tech? I have to say, Leia being so strong and kick-arse was a Lucas anomaly. He seems otherwise to think women are there to support their males. Ugh.

Other female background characters had no lines at all.

Good: the special effects! But one good isn't enough.

Thank you for your comment on the film. I would like to see it - as soon as it is available, the premiƩre is still ahead here!:-)
