A belated update

I realised that I haven't posted for a shockingly long time though I've been reading and commenting. I also haven't taken part in the two months of picowrimo, nor am I doing the current month of naarmamo. OK, three months of daily posts (and loads of commenting on everyone else's work) is a bit much in the miserable depths of winter, but I've also been very distracted.

Because:
We've decided to move to Oamaru, a small coastal town in the South Island. Why? Because Auckland is incredibly expensive, moving is a way of actually having money to spend, I've had my hours cut back, Greg and a partner (a guy we've both worked with) are starting up a new venture I'll be able to work for along with my current work, and besides, Oamaru has a lovely climate and is already set up for fibre - we'll need fast internet to work from home.

Tomorrow we're flying down to look at properties and other stuff we'll need to know about. The move isn't going to happen right away, but if we find a house we like, we can rent it out while we put this old place into slightly better order to sell. It's a lovely place with beautiful private grounds and I'll miss it, but the tired (original) kitchen and bathrooms need a bit done to be acceptable. That was something we'd been intending ever since moving in but were never able to manage.

What else? Sebastian had an injured leg and had to wear the Cone of Shame and Jasmin had her 7th birthday last week. I'll post photos when we get back next week; I've got some accumulated.

Poor Sebastian! And moves are both scary and exciting... Are you hoping to keep up with keeping chooks?

No... sorry. Oops. I was thinking of fellow Antipodean [profile] lauradhel, who I know also does crafty/arty things who is a fan of sci-fi and geeky things.

Gosh, that sounds exciting! I hope you can find somewhere lovely to live in Oamaru and that the new venture is a success.

Sounds exciting. What sort of new venture are you starting?

That is exciting news! Will you be telecommuting to your current job? It sounds too far for an actual commute.

Oh wow! That's certainly a big change; you'll probably love it! I've never looked back after leaving Auckland, and the house prices/rents there just keep getting more frightening.

Oh my!
I hope it works out well for y'all; I know you've been very frustrated with both Auckland and your own work. *hugs*

The South Island in general is lovely, and Oamaru is tiny but decently central too. Good luck with organising it all, and best wishes to Sebastian for a speedy recovery. :-)

Ooooh, you won't be all that far from me! After all the stories I've heard about Auckland crowding and house prices and so on, living somewhere else certainly does appeal. Especially with your current work situation.

Oamaru has always been a place to pass through for me, but it looks as though it has plenty to offer. Cheese, penguins, steampunk, and botanical gardens that claim modestly to be "Among the finest in the world".

Poor Sebastian - I hope he is recovering. And happy birthday to Jasmine!

That sounds like a lovely view!

Whitestone Cheese (autoplay video). Award-winning artisanal cheese made from local milk in their Oamaru factory. We can buy their cheeses in the supermarket, but it's fun to visit the factory shop and have a look around :) I'm particularly fond of their Windsor Blue (while also recognising that blue cheeses are not to everyone's taste!)

Am sorry to hear that you are moving, though I understand wanting to live somewhere cheaper. Having your hours cut back would be frustrating.

Here's hoping you find something nice in Oamaru.

We will have to catch up before you move. :)

I really can't be bothered looking for another job, and working for the start-up will make up for it. I'd like more time off anyway once we're somewhere else, for exploring and just having a nice time.

Yes, we must! Do you want to see Mr Holmes? Or of course (we're probably still here then) the new Star Wars film?

[identity profile] imhilien.livejournal.com 2015-08-04 09:47 am (UTC)(link)
It has to be the new Star Wars film. :)

Good luck with finding a house you like and that's affordable.

Your new life sounds as if it should be positively idyllic. :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2015-08-04 09:26 am (UTC)(link)
I hope so! The logistics are a bit scary but life down there should be very good.

What an adventure! I wish you much joy with the new enterprise (as it were) and creating a beautiful new home.

Oh the very best with your new venture! That sounds so exciting :)

Good luck with the house hunting! I hope it all works out and that things calm down lots after. It sounds as if it should (hopefully) be pretty nice in the end. It's all the transitional stuff that is never easy, though, isn't it?

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2015-08-04 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Good to hear from you here once in a while. Good luck with the move! It sounds like a very cool place.

[identity profile] vjezkova.livejournal.com 2015-08-04 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, leaving your house in Auckland is not that simple. You will leave a piece of your life there. But of course, moving is reasonable in this situation and it seems Oamaru can be a pleasant place for you and your cats. So - good luck!
Aha, so Sebastian“s injury has happened recently! Poor darling, please cuddle him for me! Jasmin is 7...incredible! But...I have known you for some time...I have always loved your cats. Of course I look forward to seeing the photos.
Once more - good luck!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2015-08-08 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you!

Sebastian's well over it - I'll post about it as people have been concerned.

[identity profile] nautile26.livejournal.com 2015-08-04 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
That's exciting news! There are so many beautiful places in that part of the country. I remember going to Oamaru with my parents when I was about 8 or 9 and seeing the penguins. :)

Good luck with the house hunting.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2015-08-08 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
And there's excellent weather! I think it's snowing there - I haven't lived anywhere like that since Germany.

Yes, we'll have to see the penguins. :-)

Not the cone of shame! Poor Sebastian. I hope he's healing.

A big step, but it sounds like you're moving to a place that appeals to you and that it's a chance to do something new, sometimes that's not a bad thing! What made you choose the town, do you know the area?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2015-08-08 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Sebastian's totally recovered - I'll post about it as people have been concerned.

Greg knows the area, it's a pretty place, and unlike the other places I fancied, has fibre which we'll need.

[identity profile] jaxomsride.livejournal.com 2015-08-05 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Good luck on the house hunting. I hope the cats don't mind the change.

Poor Sebastian, I hope he is healing well. Where does time fly it doesn't seem that long since you were putting up Jasmin's first pictures. Happy belated birthday to her.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2015-08-08 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Sebastian's well over it - I'll post about it as people have been concerned.

Moving the cats will be horrible for them as they'll have to fly cargo, but that's better than a 3-day drive in a camper van which I also thought of as another way to get them there.

[identity profile] zoefruitcake.livejournal.com 2015-08-05 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I hope your trip to look goes well - exciting changes eh?
