LJ, DW, and a weird pancake meal

I saw this on FaceBook: 10 signs you were obsessed with LiveJournal. Only numbers 1 (You bought a premium account just so you could have more icons), 8 (You had a love/hate relationship with image hosting sites), and 10 (Your LJ friends became real friends - YESSS!) really applied to me. #8 still does apply to Dreamwidth. Having to resize, upload, then link photos is a right pain and one of the reasons I keep putting it off, so I've decided I'll restrict pic-heavy posts to LJ because of sheer galloping laziness. Even though it will store said pics on LJ's execrable Crapbook.

In other news it's back to work tomorrow and this is very depressing, also because the offices aren't air-conditioned and it's very hot very early in summer; usually this sort of heat is February weather. Plus my work laptop's solid state drive went belly up just before the break, Greg thinks because of the heat, but surely they're used in hotter countries than this. Anyway, it'll take me a while to get the rebuilt laptop back to the way I like it. At least I had a daily backup.

Work: DO NOT WANT.

[livejournal.com profile] imhilien and I went to see The Hobbit: Battle of 5 Armies in 3D this morning, me for the second time. Not enough Bilbo but I have to say I love the 3D. Afterwards we went for lunch and decided to have pancakes. "But I don't want eggs or bacon," I said, regarding the listing with misgivings:

From memory: Pancakes with scrambled eggs, bacons (sic), banana, maple syrup, ice cream, cream.
Most of the brunch items had bacons. :-P

[livejournal.com profile] imhilien was sure they were just options, but nope. I asked for banana with no bacon, and got the puzzled question, didn't I want the scrambled eggs? In the end we got our sweet pancakes plus some nice boysenberry preserve, but seriously, who would eat such a strange taste mishmash?

that article! firstly, man, we're still here! i tried to assure two friends who i had both met on LJ the other day that LJ was still the now (when we shockingly met at a john finnemore theatrical event) and they were both unconvinced. but still - come on. it's still a thing for many!

also - when you get to number 10 and you're talking about how LJ friends can be real friends (yes, obviously)... why would you want to leave, eh, fandom?

i mean - i know a lot a lot of people have left. but a surprising number of people have stayed.

anyway - that's just an unrelated whinge. really - not to do with what you said. interesting that the LJ post doesn't mention fandom at all, though. maybe that's why they think it's completely gone.

work does suck, even if it is quite good. my sympathies!

and yes - pancakes shoudl be sweet OR savory. not both.

I still like LJ better than any alternative, and they do seem to be making an effort lately to improve it rather than piss users off. If only they'd fix Crapbook and get my lost pics back.

John Finnemore - tell me more!

I don't know all of the LJ stuff (Hot what?) but I am definitely still here because imho there is nothing else out there quite like it. I have made some really amazing RL friends here, for sure. No plans on leaving anytime soon xD

Ugh I feel you on the work thing. I'm back as well and wish I wasn't!

Also wtf with the pancakes. I have seen that knd of thing, it has never appealed to me! Pancake sacrilege!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2015-01-12 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, me too. Nothing else but DW (and that's a clone lagging a bit behind) offers the structure for good conversations.

It was stinking hot at work today, my laptop has multiple issues, and I can't find my files. Bleah.

It is really weird when people keep going on about LJ as something from back in the day, when it's still where I fandom, because nothing else works as well. Very disconcerting!

And that was definitely a weird combination on the pancakes - glad you could eventually convince them to spare you the savory bits! I mean, soem odd combinations do work well sometimes, but you wouldn't think they'd be surprised at people not being exactly convinced.

Hope work is not too bad, though. :-/

Totally agree!

Work was even worse than I thought: stinking hot, my laptop has multiple issues, and I can't find my files. Sigh.

I poked around the site with the LJ article, giggling madly. There seems to be a little pool of 20somethings there, all of whom are now far too old and wise to use LJ, which is sooo last decade, now that they're grown up writers with important things to say. To them I think: kids, stay on Tumblr; you're clearly too young for LJ.

I also liked #9, learning basic HTML coding. I already knew a smattering, but LJ has definitely honed my skills! But some of the others -- I saw DeadJournal once and thought it was a joke, then found it even funnier when I learned it wasn't. But "rating communities"? "Hot Fashion"? I was surprised that ONTD wasn't mentioned, but maybe that was part of the Older LJ that so evidently lay outside the blog writer's personal sphere (along with other large swathes of LJ, such as the fandom and writing spheres).

I liked #9 too; I already knew HTML too but the practice was great. It was years before I trusted the rich text option. :-P

Yeah, most of the stuff never interested me, esp the long surveys designed for US high-school kids. I came here for the friends and fandom, though the latter's faded. Sadly.

A few friends of mine have got fed up with Facebook and cut back on how much they use it, and are returning to live journal more. I read lj every day, even though I don't post as much as I would like to. But I'm always pleased to see friends who are posting - I've not joined the evil cult of Facebook, so lj has remained my main point of contact online.

I'm only on Facebook to follow friends who left and went there; I rarely post anything but links and it's a hard place to follow conversations. LJ (and DW) and my preferred means of staying in touch.

So strange to know that you and your laptop suffer from the heat...:-)
I still haven“t seen the new Hobbit film.
Sweet pancakes are yummy but THAT combination? LOL

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2015-01-12 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think the film is as good as the other two; they shouldn't have stretched the story to three.

I... just don't get why anyone would want to eat that weird combo. [shudder]
