Welcome back internet!

I missed you when you were gone for two whole days. [hugs tightly] Apparently someone dug up fibre and took out this part of town. [rolls eyes] BUT YOU'RE BACK!

It's not easy to catch up at work as we're temporarily sitting in a very exposed area, basically a public thoroughfare, while waiting for our new desks to arrive. We were told three weeks but it's more likely to be six. Sigh. Yeah, way to make your employees feel wanted: tell them they're moving with 1 week's notice and order the office furniture at the same time when management knew two months before and that's pretty much the lead time.

I'm considering a sign under my name saying "chopped liver" but maybe "at lunch" or "having a break" would be more useful to explain the non-work window that, you know, might be open at those times.

That does not sound fun. Is this a different building you're now in and how does it affect your commute?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-09-18 10:18 am (UTC)(link)
It's the same building. It's a long story but briefly we were dumped moved down to the 3rd floor despite there being nowhere for us to go at the time. I think it'll be OK when we have proper desks and our own positions by the window - and then I'll have a view of the park. If the guy sharing the window lets me raise the sun screen far enough.

chopped liver

Bahahahaha!

Yeah, so tempted.

\o/ for restored internets! But that does not sound good re. work. I hope they get a move on with things. It's a stupid thing, but always a bit demoralising and annoying when you get shunted around to inconvenient places.

:-/

(I... don't get the chopped liver joke - am I being especially dim this morning?)

[identity profile] reapermum.livejournal.com 2012-09-18 11:16 am (UTC)(link)
OH had an office move a bit like that. It was an internal rearrangement so there wasn't any furniture problems, but IT were supposed to have enough time over the weekend to deal with computers having to be moved. Of course the IT problems kept them out of the system for over a week.

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2012-09-18 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Bah, I am sorry about your lack of internet and desks, but I'm glad you're back online, anyway!

[identity profile] quabazaa.livejournal.com 2012-09-18 05:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh gods that sounds terrible. I hope they move you to a quieter area soon!

[identity profile] jhall1.livejournal.com 2012-09-18 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too.

Welcome back! The internets missed you too!

[identity profile] vjezkova.livejournal.com 2012-09-18 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Hurrah! You are back! I was worried, you know...

[identity profile] jaxomsride.livejournal.com 2012-09-18 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I have always thought management to be a contradiction in terms, sort of like "Rush Hour".

[identity profile] imhilien.livejournal.com 2012-09-19 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
Being without internet can be painful, yes. :(

I hope the new desks arrive soon. In the meantime, you're still expected to be productive as usual. /sarcasm

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-09-19 09:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, we feel somewhat unvalued.

Ah, you don't know the "What am I, chopped liver?" expression. See all about it here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chopped_liver#Chopped_liver_as_an_expression). :-)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-09-19 09:15 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! It was very frustrating. I need my interwebs.

Apparently the fibre is still cut, but our ISP did a work-around.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-09-19 09:17 am (UTC)(link)
Where we are, people just stand around and talk--and look at us and what's on our screens. So annoying. A colleague is talking about taping off and area and telling people to Keep Out Of Our Office.

Yeah, I had a more frustrating and annoying day than usual which left me feeling particularly put-upon. :-(

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-09-19 09:18 am (UTC)(link)
Really? Thank you! I've felt very isolated lately with my lists being so quiet and not much fannishness happening. I mightn't be saying much, but I have been reading though!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-09-19 09:22 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! I missed you all. :-)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-09-19 09:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the less people do, the more they get paid. I'm not cynical; I'm realistic (and somewhat jaded).

I always call it peak traffic and it's why I start work at 7:30am.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-09-19 09:25 am (UTC)(link)
I live in fear of the whole country being cut off. 8-0

In fact they're piling more work onto me and they're wondering why I'm resentful. It's more and more from another department till eventually I won't be able to do my own work. Oy.

I really do know the feeling. I hope the situation improves pronto!!

And, aha, no, I hadn't heard that before - all is explained. :-)

If you're interested, I have a journal where I actually post stuff other than daily LOLs: [livejournal.com profile] bethinexile. It's actually a comm (so I don't have to switch user logins).

Also, if you'd like to spend part of this weekend writing in the company of a bunch of cheerfully crazy people, we're having a [livejournal.com profile] fic_rush weekend this coming weekend. I'd love to have you drop in! We run for 48 hours (based on midnight GMT), and there's a check-in post every hour at [livejournal.com profile] fic_rush_48.

[identity profile] imhilien.livejournal.com 2012-09-20 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
Ouch, I'd be resentful too...

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-09-20 06:41 am (UTC)(link)
Our desks arrived today, in broken-down form. It's still going to be 2-3 weeks before they reorganise the floorplan and assemble them. :-( They wouldn't have treated the sales & marketing people like that; background boffins don't count.

I'll see how it goes when we have decent working conditions but I'm thinking of reactivating my online CV. Dammit, I liked the people and the manager on the 4th floor.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2012-09-20 07:41 am (UTC)(link)
That sounds great but I don't think I have the time this weekend. I do plan to work on my big AU saga in November for picowrimo. :-)

[personal profile] thisbluespirit 2012-09-20 11:11 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I suppose if they've arrived that's something. Good luck with surviving the next couple of weeks, then! :-/

*jumps in*

Oh, yes, [livejournal.com profile] fic_rush is fun - and useful at getting things done (when it's not being a slight distraction, heh). It'd be nice to see you there if you managed it for the November round. :-)

Well, feel free to drop in and check us out any time during the weekend. Nobody actually tries to write for 48 hours, mind you! It's just an opportunity to set aside some time, even an hour, and have a supportive group for doing it.

You can also just keep an eye on the main comm -- that way, you'll see the polls and announcements that determine the weekend each month. We'd love to see you any time!
