Introducing... Sebastian!

I meant to post this yesterday but LJ was down.

Allow me to introduce... Sebastian.

Yep, that's the source of the icon. :-)

He's seven months old and came from a local Lonely Miaow foster home on Sunday. He was rescued at four weeks from a Mangere (South Auckland) street, and was the only non-tabby in the litter. He's very sweet and affectionate and playful so I have no idea why he wasn't adopted till now. (But damn, I could have taken two other younger kittens with him who were swarming all over me at the home and I feel sort of guilty about that but three cats are expensive enough to board when we go away).

Sebastian is black except for a white spot on his front, another bigger one on his underneath, and a couple of white hairs in each ear. He has lovely green eyes, more gold at the edges. Why Sebastian? I suggested a lot of names to Greg and I expected him to laugh and say no, but he thinks Sebastian will grow into the magnificence of his name.

And in fact he's already about the size of Jasmin and Ashley, but they're little cats. I hope he doesn't get too big because he's a really smoocher. I'll have to train him not to knead though.

Ashley likes him and has even played with him, but Jasmin's very uncertain. She's better each day, but he hasn't helped by running after her to make friends and play, and, what's worse, sleeping in all her favourite places. She sniffs each one and looks outraged as she stalks off. :-) I'm sure it will work out fine: she didn't like Ashley at first and Sebastian is a very friendly, gentle little boy.

About to make a leap at the camera.

Aha! In one of Jasmin's favourite spots.

There will be more of all three cats. :-)

KITTIN. I think that's a very nice name.

OH, he's just gorgeous! I'm glad you could give him a home.

Awww, such a sweet face! And that's an adorable name. He could almost be Bast for short ;)

Bazza's not an option. ;-)

I should think not ;)

KITTEN! He is gorgeous, and he looks like he will grow up to be a distinguished fellow. Sebastian is an excellent name!

Oh, I'm so happy for you! He's totally beautiful, and I will look forward to paintings of him in August perhaps:)

Hello Sebastian! And congratulations on a lovely name!

He looks rather like one of my sister's cats, Snurre (not as good a name!) did when he was a kitten - though he's grown very large by now...

corvuscornix: (Ainley!TimeLord)

[personal profile] corvuscornix 2011-04-08 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, nice reasoning, but alas we do not say that our cats snore (that would be "snarka") but that they "spin" ("spinner"), i.e as in "spinning a thread". I've actually never really reflected on why before, but I suppose it may originally have been because people thought the sound similar to the rhythm of a spinning-wheel?

Snurre OTOH is related to the word snurra, (spinning around) and its effect of making you snurrig (dizzy/confused) - making it a suitably "cute" name for a lively kitten, but less so for the cool, laid-back adult he has grown into...
corvuscornix: (Uss)

[personal profile] corvuscornix 2011-04-08 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, "cute" names should be avoided. A more neutral name will "adapt" to the animal's character with time...

Oh, but now I wonder if "schnurren" and "snurra" are false friends too, because if not, maybe you were sort of right anyway, if both the Swedish and the German word for a cat's purr have to do with "spinning" (assuming that the "spin" in "spinning a thread" comes from "spinning around")...

Oh, I've got myself confused now. Time to go to bed I think. :P

He's ridiculously cute. :-)

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
AWWWWWW, he's lovely and looks very very sweet.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
He has a very sweet nature! I can do without the kneading though. :-P

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
I mostly just let them knead- I keep a pair of cat clippers handy and just snip off the sharp tips, so it doesn't get ouchy. :^)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
I must clip his front claws. Ashley won't let me but Jasmin's fine with it; I'm hoping he is too. I can touch him all over so he might; but then I can touch Ashley everywhere too but she hates having her claws done.

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
*fingers crossed* Mostly I've been able to convince my cats that it's no big deal, but some just can't stand it.

[identity profile] britgeekgrrl.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
AWWWW! What a little cutie! He has such a serious face!

*remote scritches*

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
He's a very happy, purry boy despite that though! He's seems to have taken over my reading chair. :-)
kernezelda: (Rory)

[personal profile] kernezelda 2011-04-07 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
What a little darling! I hope Jasmin can get comfortable with him soon.

My oldest cat, Ranger, is the most at ease with new little Curio, probably because he's in the house more than anyone else. He'll actually play with her. And Rory (who will be three in May) thinks she's the best playmate since sliced bread. The others have accepted that she's not going away, but Kiki, the next youngest at just over two years old, still regards her as a strange and unsettling thing in his home, and retreats when he sees her. I've been making much of him when he does show up, so he knows he's still loved. :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
I've been making a fuss of Jasmin too, and cuddling her in bed. I think she'll get used to him. She's much happier about it all than she was. The hard part is that he has to stay inside for a couple of weeks but the other two come and go.

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Oh! So cute! So cute!

*cannot say any more, is too overcome with cuteness squee*

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
He'd get on so well with Mickey! He's a playful little boy.

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 12:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww. Although I think Mickey may be happier as an only cat, anyway. Apparently my mother is spoiling him to pieces. :)

[identity profile] snowgrouse.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
KURNAU :3 He is very cute! And Sebastian is a perfect name for a pretty boy cat.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
I think it really suits him.

Ha, two beautiful black cats looking at each other! :-D

[identity profile] san-valentine.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
Ahh, he's an adorable little thing. He reminds me of my Navarre, though Navarre didn't have any white at all.

I hope they all settle down before long. He's a lucky boy, and I'm sure you'll all be ahppy together.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
Etienne was one of the names I actually suggested! (I assume you mean that Navarre). I didn't think you got black cats without any white at all.

I think he's delighted to have a forever home at last. I'm sure Jasmin will come round; she's much happier about it than she was and I've been cuddling her in bad at night. Soon I shall experiment with both and hope I don't get scratched as I've been twice before with a new cat on the bed.

Oh my gosh he's cute--and he looks so curious and lively in those pictures! Who can resist a kitteh :) I'm glad Jasmin is getting better, some cats just don't like change very much do they.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
She seems a lot more territorial than Ashley who's quite happy about it all. Maybe it's because they were both in foster homes with lots of other cats. Jasmin's better each day though.

[identity profile] luinielle.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, he's adorable!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
He is: very sweet and cuddly!

[identity profile] sallymn.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, he is beautiful! Those eyes... :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
He could be the cat in your icon!

He appears to love the camera as much as it loves him :-)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
He certainly likes the dangly strap!

[identity profile] zoefruitcake.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
He is absolutely gorgeous :0) I love his tiny white bit!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
The one on his tummy is bigger; he displays it when he rolls on his back and waves his paws at me. :-)

[identity profile] imhilien.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
Awww... what a sweet kitty! I'm glad that he was rescued. :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
His foster homes have loved him because he's such a sweetie but he really needed a home of his own. And I really was tempted to take a couple more bundles of furry purriness. [sighs wistfully]

[identity profile] vjezkova.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 06:07 am (UTC)(link)
Ahm what a lovely surprise! I could not get LJ until now - and here is your sweet Sebastian! I hope Jasmin will make friends with him eventually. How nice from you to give the kitty your lovely home!

He really deserves a home; he's such a sweet little guy!

[identity profile] jthijsen.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
He looks and sounds like he's got you wrapped around his little pinkie. Which is as it should be, of course.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 07:03 am (UTC)(link)
Yep: cats have staff as they say!

He really is!

Awww! His little face, it's adorable.

So many people on my flist have acquired new cats lately: I'm feeling terribly kitty-jealous.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 10:00 am (UTC)(link)
He so is! I've just been watching NCIS with him on my lap. Neither of the girls are lap cats though Jasmin loves her bedtime snuggles.

[identity profile] ultrapsychobrat.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 07:15 am (UTC)(link)
He's beautiful! I love black kitties. Congratulations!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 10:02 am (UTC)(link)
I missed out on a black girl and was going to see a tortoiseshell girl, but I happened to meet this little guy first. Not that he's so little at 7 months.

[identity profile] ultrapsychobrat.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Our black kitty was super affectionate; wherever one of was, he was there, too. Laps, of course, were his preferred places to be. And he was by far the largest cat we ever had.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Eep. I hope this guy isn't! They said he'd be medium which is what I suppose Vic was and that was a good size.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 10:02 am (UTC)(link)
He is! Have you acquired a cat yet?
ext_3954: (cross eyed cat)

[identity profile] alicambs.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 11:20 am (UTC)(link)
No, too many birds! We might do one day as I really would like one.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
We have a lot of birds too, but really, all the cats I've had here have only ever caught fewer than one a year in total. We've managed to rescue most of them if we've been home.
