Dreamwidth

I am now at Dreamwidth as vilakins (if anyone there wants to subscribe). It's still in beta but it's looking good, their terminology is great, and they even have an import function that will bring your journal across. :-)

Ah, how'd you manage to sign up? It says I need a code or to wait until the 30th. XD

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-04-16 10:19 am (UTC)(link)
Someone gave me a code. She got randomly signed up (and the code) by setting herself with an open ID there, then subscribing to dw_news. You can do everything but post with an open ID apparently.

I'll post when I get any invite codes. :-)

Aaah, I see. I am too lazy to try to find a code, especially now that I see someone's already registered the name "van." BAH.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-04-16 10:24 am (UTC)(link)
Oh no! How about vand?

I suppose I could have gone with nicola or nico, but people know me as vilakins now.

Man, I can't see the screen with my lenses out; I'm about to go to bed, and I should!

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2009-04-16 10:36 am (UTC)(link)
I guess I'll think of something. I'm just trying to move away from the whole vandonovan thing, ah well.

Night!

I have just added you to my circle under my OpenID :)

Oh lord, I suppose this means I'll have to start a fifth journal (at least GJ seems to be pretty much dead)... I confess I'm getting very bored with wonderful new fan-friendly alternatives to LJ. I do cross-post, but I can only remember two comments on the non-Live Journals.

I think I will delete my IJ when Dreamwidth gets its crossposting feature worked out, so I'll just have LJ and Dreamwidth journals, and crosspost to the two of them. I really think that LJ's days are numbered, because an advertising-driven site isn't really sustainable over the long term. Dreamwidth seems to have a business plan that is well thought out and sustainable: no ads, but also a fixed proportion of free accounts to paid accounts, so that they don't overstrain their resources.

Oh, I'll do it. But it's all getting so familiar. (And then there's the question of whether to go for plain Kalypso, if I can, but I always end up using the same name because it seems simpler, particularly with html in the cross-postings.)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-04-16 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
What about some of the other van variations you thought up a while back?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-04-16 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
And I added you back! I'm not sure if this means you'll be there when you join too. I suspect it does; the site seems very well thought out.

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2009-04-16 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but if I really liked any of them, I'd've changed my LJ name to them already. Blaugh. For as creative as I am, I sure am not creative.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-04-16 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Dreamwidth seems very well thought out (if incomplete as yet), and unlike with IJ, I've already had comments from people including one of the designers. It certainly seems the place to be of all the alternatives.

I'm impressed with their thoughtfulness in terminology, providing an import facility of their own, the OpenID options for people who want to comment but don't want (or haven't got) a journal there. They've only got two layouts at the moment, but they will be adding a lot more going by their customisation page.

I might still export to IJ just as a backup. It's the only other one I'm on.

Go for kalypso! It's recognisable, and if you have Semagic set up right, it shouldn't matter. But I'm not cross-posting myself; I plan to just import regularly as that brings over new posts and, optionally, comments. That way I don't have to edit two (or three) posts if I have a typo.

I did consider going for Nicola or Nico, but people know me as vilakins.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-04-16 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't believe there's already a van there. It's not a common name!

I rather liked van23: vahn two three, but I know you didn't. How about avan? :-D You're a Van and it sounds like the American version of Avon.

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2009-04-16 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'd rather not have any numbers in my username, especially as that makes it look like I'm 23 or was 23 when I made the account. XD

I thought about "avan" actually (or something like kerravan) but I don't think I identify enough with Avon/want to identify enough with him to do it. And kerravan would be too easy to mix up with other people with similar usernames, and I don't want to really tie my name to any fandom, really, which is why I went with my real name in the first place.

The "van" name was registered on the 15th, it was pretty recent. Ah well.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-04-16 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Bummer!

Yeah, I've known people leave a fandom and still have a name connected to it. lavan (LA Van)? vanderful is still good. Anyway, I'll think about it. I'm going out for several hours now. :-P

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2009-04-16 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I know many "jennysnapes" and "sarahmalfoys" and so forth, who don't remotely do things with HP anymore. Ah well. Don't worry about it. I've been pondering this for like, five years now, ahaha.

[identity profile] bigdamnxenafan.livejournal.com 2009-04-20 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm still on the fence about Dreamwidth, though with each passing day it becomes more appealing. If I do sign up, I don't think I'll be leaving lj though. Decisions, decisions. :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-04-20 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I have no plans to leave--I have too many friends and comms here. It's easy to import there though, so I'll just run two identical journals, and respond to comments on both, then if I ever need it, I do have somewhere to go. :-)

And I love that Scotty scene--and that whole film.

[identity profile] bigdamnxenafan.livejournal.com 2009-04-21 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
I do so love Scotty especially in Star Trek IV. The whole transparent aluminum bit is priceless. It's my favorite of all the Star Trek films.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-04-21 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
Mine too!

Have you seen the new one? It premièred here a couple of weeks ago with some of the stars (including Zachary Quinto and our own Karl Urban), but I'll see it on general release. Maybe next week for my birthday if it's out then. [hopes]

[identity profile] bigdamnxenafan.livejournal.com 2009-04-21 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen the new Trek movie yet. Not really sure if I want to. Too much rewriting of canon. Oh but Karl Urban...ugh how I love him. If I do see the movie it will be mostly for him.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-04-21 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yay, you know Karl Urban! I want to see it even if it mucks about with canon. I'm not that keen on anything that's on here ATM, but I'm hoping that might start soon as it's been ages since I went to the cinema and I fancy a night out.

[identity profile] bigdamnxenafan.livejournal.com 2009-04-21 10:51 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yes I've been in love/lust with Karl Urban for many a year. He played Cupid and Caesar on Xena. And I enjoyed the "Pathfinder" movie as well. :)
