Flat fruit: #2 in a weird food series (probably a very short one)

I bought some "Flatto" flat peaches today. I was wary at first, thinking they'd either been genetically modified, or tortured as baby fruit, but they're actually a natural strain that originates in China, called pan tao there according to one site. They're known as saturn or donut peaches in the US; these were grown down in Otago.

They're white-fleshed with very small pits that are easy to twist out. I still prefer nectarines though for their more intense flavour.

They're pretty good, and easy to eat too since it's so easy to get the pit out. I make a huge mess with normal peaches.

Yeah, it's hard not to make a mess with a normal pit. I also hate the way the fruit tastes around the pit so I usually leave a big berth around it. I'll have to look for these sometime. Along with the fractal broccoli. XD

Yeah, I usually cut the flesh off the pits, but that can get messy too.

I'm sure you can find both over there. :-) "Saturn peaches" seems to be the most common name.

I'd say they're about the same as normal peaches, and they're a lot easier to eat (and less fuzzy). I think nectarines are nicer, but that's just me.

Yeah, they're called Saturn peaches here, too. My favorite peaches, though, are Elberta freestone peaches--they're huge and juicy and sweet.

Oh, that's what freestone in peaches and nectarines means--the pit is completely unattached to the flesh of the peach, so when you cut it open it just falls out. And, yes, Elbertas are delicious.

Ah, I've seen them here as well. But those we get here are from Turkey.

Unfortunately I have trouble eating peaches, nectarines and certain kinds of plums - my mouth starts to itch inside and sometimes even the lips itch. :( Sometimes I still do eat them, if only a little bit. I remember that during the pregnancy I did not have any allergic reactions to any fruit at all! I have to get pregnant again... ;)

We had some of those on sale in a health food shop off Piccadilly here in the summer. They are called Flat Peaches and remind me of the Peche Blanche we used to buy in France on family holidays.

They do have them in France, so they could be the same thing. They're lower in acid than other peaches, so maybe that's why they sell them at the health shop. I'm going to buy some more today. :-)

It's the first time I've seen them! I went to three different food places today (for various items I could only get from each) and only one has the Flatto peaches. I bought two more packs. :-)
