The Pretender 120: Baby Love

For once, I have some things to say about The Pretender that [livejournal.com profile] astrogirl2 hasn't already.

I am intrigued that Angelo is the puppeteer who sent both Sydney and Jarod off in different directions last ep with forged e-mails from each other. I mean, I'm not sure if the guy can speak, and what he did to his hair was... creepy. Why didn't he finish it?

We finally know what SL27 is. And ewww. They had captives they bred from? I feel sick, and that's the first time I've reacted to this show with visceral disgust. I am worried they had Jarod's parents down there, and that all the rescued (and now dead) kids were his sibs. Speaking of which, how did Ms Parker get more than one of them away. You'd think a rescue would only work the once.

Raines creeps me out so much. Angelo can't touch him for creepiness. And the guy lives in the ducting? Bad move, Center designers, to make it big enough for someone to crawl around in let alone stash files and crackers in.

And last of all, the lovely big guy Ax (He was called Ax, right?) reminded me so much of Gan. There was some discussion on a B7 mailing list about Gan making the best father (via mpreg but let's not go there) and here he was: Gan being adorable with a baby. Awwww.

And yeah, the baby was very cute. It's not often I say that. :-)

1x20, btw... Astro typoed. :)

This is the ep where he shaves it off, yes? Savoring the moment, I guess... it's the first time he's made any outward sign of having his own desires and motivations.

SL27 is very sickening. I think there's a reason it's burnt-out.

And it was an adorable baby. Let's face it, it worked cuz it was total fan-service - big guys being adorable with a baby. :)

Do we find out more about Angelo? Is he a pretender too, or something else. He certainly seems to have his own agenda.

Yeah, and it didn't scream. I've never understood the evolutionary advantage of screaming babies. Not a survival strategy, I'd have thought.

[identity profile] redstarrobot.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
We do learn a bit more about Angelo, yeah; he sticks around. I think they say when they introduce him that he's not a pretender, but more of a sponge...

I think, historically, people tend to accidentally neglect babies more than they tend to punish them for screaming, making screaming pretty advantageous. Most likely, though, it's just like the common response for speaking to someone who doesn't speak your language - raise the volume until they get it. ;)

I did? *looks* D'oh! *fixes old post*

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I remember them saying he was a sponge. He certainly seems capable of independent thought though: concealing what he fund on-line about Jarod, researching the past. sending Jarod and Sydney off to discover some of it for themselves...

He seems older than Jarod, or is that just his weirdness?

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yay! I've been kind of hoping you might start doing your own posts on these!

We do find out some more about Angelo. I'm becoming rather attached to Angelo, actually. :)

We don't really know that for sure, but ye gods, it doesn't look good, does it? *shudder*

And Ax was one of the better guest characters, maybe. He was awfully sweet. :)

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
My feeling is that people generally tend to underestimate Angelo and how much independent thought he is capable of.

I think he is about the same age as Jarod, or a little younger, actually.

[identity profile] redstarrobot.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
He sure does, and I think that's why his shaving his hair is sort of a big deal, aside from him being crazy. :) Even Syd, when Angelo is introduced, says he's not capable of any moral judgments of his own, and clearly he is.

I think it's mostly that he's not as pretty. :)

Same here!

Awww, Angelo. :)

Up till now, I haven't really had much to add to your posts. You do good commentary. I do agree how the A and B stories are becoming integrated BTW. I said to Greg that they seem to be spending almost equal time on them now, and maybe that's a factor.

Ax was so Gan-like! He was very sweet.

Greg goes away for another week today so no more Pretender unless I watch the double ep tonight--and no more SJA till he gets back. Woe.

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
Aww, thanks! But I'm sure there's tons more to say. I don't even write down all the stuff I'm thinking, or I'd have 6-page posts and even RSR wouldn't read them. :)

The A and B stories are often much better integrated by this point, and I like that a lot, myself. There've been a couple of eps in S2 so far, by the way, where the B story gets more screentime, which is awesome.

And, aww. You can't be all sneaky and watch without him? :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
Well, he'd still have to watch when he gets back, so there's not much point. It would be different if he didn't like the series as much as I do.

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 06:52 am (UTC)(link)
I dunno, a lot of this show is worth seeing twice. :)

The shackled obstetric table, right? It's so awful, and very indicative, if we didn't already know, of how horrible the Centre is.

The guys with the baby were adorable!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. At least Sydney and Parker weren't involved in that. I feel a lot less sympathy for Jacob now.

They were! And Ax was like a Chicago Gan!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)
And since Greg is leaving at 5am (in about 5 minutes) there was no Pretender last night as a double ep was too long. We did see Sarah Jane and the Brig though. (And the Sontaran blowing the smoke off his gun; he must have been watching westerns.) :-D

[identity profile] redstarrobot.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not clear how deeply Jacob was involved - he knew, but it's not clear he was a part of it. (In fact, it's implied he found out - he wouldn't have been a liability otherwise.)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Didn't they find something with his name on it down there? Of course, someone like Angelo could have put it there. I had the impression though that he had a change of conscience about it.

[identity profile] redstarrobot.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
He signed Jarod into the Centre, which is probably why he started asking questions about where the kids were coming from.
