Time and hats

No, not the unspecified number of hats Donna packed for the TARDIS.

Time
I kept getting hungrier and hungrier as I waited for lunch, till I realised that it had been 12:15 for rather a long time. Yep, my watch had stopped and needed a new battery. I've had that watch my whole adult life and it keeps brilliant time so I was relieved it was just the battery.

Hats
I believe they're coming back in, and I've seen a few trilbies around. I've always liked hats and have a collection I'd like to wear more often without being stared at, and I cheered myself up by buying two more: a tweed flat cap and a black trilby with white pinstripes, both very smart and very reasonably priced too. So my collection now consists of:

  • a black felt fedora with a white band
  • a white straw fedora with a black band
  • a fawn felt fedora
  • several sun hats
  • some baseball caps
  • a black and white straw boater bought for the races
  • a brown leather akubra
  • a Roman helmet (used in my re-enacting, added for completeness)
  • two knitted Jayne hats
  • a tan leather flat cap
  • a brown leather pilot's helmet (see icon)
  • a scarlet Maharajah's turban with plume (a gift from a friend and as yet unworn in public)
  • a purple felted woollen hat with a curled brim (brilliant for wind and rain)
  • a brown wool-and-possum-fur peaked hat
  • a brown tweed flat cap
  • a black trilby with white pinstripes
Bring back hats. Hats are wonderful things, and useful too. It's just occurred to me that I may feel about hats the way others feel about shoes, except that--so far--hats are not de rigueur.

Ahahahaa, you stopped time!

I'm fond of hats too, and feel the same sigma, except for baseball caps, which are, of course, the sort I don't care for! XD

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-04-09 06:50 am (UTC)(link)
I have some baseball caps (mostly geeky giveaways) I only wear in the hammock or when walking. I suppose I should have listed them too.

One of the things I like about Cambridge is that wearing hats, while far from universal, is common-ish, so I can wear a fedora to keep the rain off my glasses without anyone batting an eyelid. Nor does my leather stetson attract attention. My flat cap makes me look too upper class for the part of town I live in, but my German army ski-cap fits in nicely... and I dream of the day I can wear my hand embroidered anglo-saxon phrygian caps in public! All the best people collect hats.

I love hats too :0)

[identity profile] bramblyhedge.livejournal.com 2008-04-09 08:42 am (UTC)(link)
Oooh! *is envious of your hat collection* >;3 I couldn't care less about shoes, but yeah, I love hats.

[identity profile] miss-next.livejournal.com 2008-04-09 08:48 am (UTC)(link)
Yay for hats! I have no idea how many I possess, but I never go out of the house without one (except on the very rare occasions when I wear a kind of tiara thing instead, which I don't do unless I'm wearing a sari and the weather is suitable). We should form a hat club. :-)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-04-09 08:55 am (UTC)(link)

Oh! I forgot my akubra (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akubra)!

and I dream of the day I can wear my hand embroidered anglo-saxon phrygian caps in public

Ha! I suppose I should include my Roman helmet and my two knitted Jayne hats then!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-04-09 08:58 am (UTC)(link)
Yay! I'm delighted with how many do. :-)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-04-09 08:59 am (UTC)(link)
They're so much more interesting than what keeps my feet off the pavement, and so stylish!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-04-09 09:01 am (UTC)(link)
I should wear mine more often, and not just for sun and rain and wind. :-)

[identity profile] linda-joyce.livejournal.com 2008-04-09 09:33 am (UTC)(link)
I now want an akubra, that would be ideal for drizzle as well as winter sun. And I agree with you, I want hats back in fashion. I don't quite have your collection but I have more than anyone else I know over here.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-04-09 09:43 am (UTC)(link)
Akubras are great for all weather bit high winds. People often assume I'm a Aussie when I wear it, even though they're sold in a lot of places here.

Ooh! I forgot the B&W strew boater I bought for the Melbourne Cup!

[identity profile] hafren.livejournal.com 2008-04-09 11:57 am (UTC)(link)
I love hats on other people, but absolutely hate the feel of them on my own head. They feel somehow claustrophobic. The helmet looks great.

I have no hat icons. Not unless you can count Sir Walter's jewels and bits of silk!

[identity profile] glittermouse.livejournal.com 2008-04-09 12:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I love hats! I have various coloured berets, bakerboy caps in grey, black and multicoloured hippy, a yarmulke style hippy velvet hat, two black trilbies, and a black fedora.

I tried on an almost-top-hat in John Lewis (department store) last week. It had white leaves and feathers on it, and I looked FANTASTIC if I do say so myself. But it was silly money, which I can ill afford right now. And I would have nowhere to wear it; it was a very dressy formal hat.

I long for a gothically valid top hat, a Dita-type black pillbox with veil and a Mrs Bradley-esque cloche.

Hats are just as good as shoes!

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2008-04-09 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Man, now I'm thinking about my poor, faded Official Indiana Jones fedora, sitting in my closet, almost entirely unworn these days, and longing to break it out and take it for a spin. :)

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2008-04-09 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, maybe I should buy one of those when I'm in Australia!

[identity profile] sorsha-khan.livejournal.com 2008-04-09 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Jayne hats? :-D thought it was just me & associated housemates that called them that - will have to tell the Kat & Katie entities; they will be pleased.
Can't believe you haven't worn your turban yet (or at least in public...). Vote you wear it next time you go food shopping! x

[identity profile] sorsha-khan.livejournal.com 2008-04-09 03:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Seconded. Well the first paragraph anyway! Hats always look so funky and, generally, individual - just *hate* the sensation of something on my head...

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-04-09 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
You should! They're excellent hats and they'd be good for New Mexico too.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-04-09 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
He looks rather Blackaddery.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-04-09 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a real yarmulke but I didn't count that. That top hat sounds amazing! I would adore a Mrs Bradley cloche--and quite a few of her clothes too. I just started watching my recently purchased DVDs. :-D

For shoes I go for comfort and a colour that works with lots of clothes. For me they're functional, but hats are also stylish and full of personality.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-04-09 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, you should! And it would suit you. :-)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-04-09 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought everyone called them that because of Jayne's wonderful specimen! You can google them and find knitting patterns. :-D

[identity profile] jacteest.livejournal.com 2008-04-10 09:18 am (UTC)(link)
I'm also a hat fetish. Been iconning a lot lately and toyed with the idea of doing a series on hats. One disadvantage of hats is that it doesn't do your hairdo much good....
Love your Servalan in sepia icon by the way!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-04-10 09:24 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks!

A series on hats would be great! (I wonder if Vila had helmet hair after this scene.)

[identity profile] jacteest.livejournal.com 2008-04-10 10:04 am (UTC)(link)
That's my kind of 'hat'! Leaves the hairstyle in tact.

[identity profile] daiseechain.livejournal.com 2008-04-10 02:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Hats are indeed wonderful. I like that you have trilbys and a boater. And I think you're onto something with the hat v shoe fascination. There was a time when women tended to squee about hats more than shoes, wasn't there? Pre-60s, when gloves were still worn for a day out.

I used to have a large collection, which I've sadly had to pare down. However I still have five different berets, which are immensely useful for keeping my head warm, and for storing my scarf and gloves in when not being worn. I used to get very odd looks and comments. 2 years ago, 40's fashion came back round, and then everyone thought I'd just jumped on the bandwagon. Now, irritatingly, they think I'm just too slow to have jumped off it again.

I think you should wear them regardless of what others think.

[identity profile] daiseechain.livejournal.com 2008-04-10 02:48 pm (UTC)(link)
John Lewis has an almost-top-hat? With feathers? Where? How did I miss this?

I must hunt this down. Thanks for the, heh, heads up.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-04-10 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually protecting my hair in wind and rain is one of the reasons I wear hats!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-04-10 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I forgot my berets! I have three, I think. Yes, it looks as if my interest lies in hats; I never got the whole shoe thing.

I also have three wigs, but I only wear those to costume parties, Roman feasts, and bloths (medieval feasts).

[identity profile] jacteest.livejournal.com 2008-04-11 12:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I have curly hair and it actually thrives in wind and rain. When I wear a hat (which I do almost always in winter) I look a bit like this when I take it off: http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg50/jacteest/bad20hair20day.jpg

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-04-11 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL! My hair, which is normally straight and smooth, goes like a dying and limp perm in wind and rain. I really do look as if I've been dragged through a hedge backwards.

[identity profile] crycraven.livejournal.com 2008-12-13 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
You have a world of hats. I like!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-12-13 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! I love my hats, and wish they were more accepted. Young guys here are wearing trilbies, but why not women? Mine looks damned smart on me. :-)
