Tessa update

Thank you to everyone who commented on my last post about Tessa. [hugs]

I'm back from the vet now, and she has a high temperature and is a bit dehydrated, but they don't know why. The vet did say that they've had a lot of cats with fevers lately. She suggested blood tests so I said yes, and will get the results back tomorrow afternoon. Tessa's also had a quick dehydration drip and an antibiotic injection, and some liquid antibiotic for us to give her twice a day.

The vet also said that her glucose levels were up, but that it could be due to stress and dehydration. Burmese however are prone to diabetes, and if she has that (which would be unconnected with her current problem) we'd have to give her insulin injections. !!!

I told Tessa she was a very high-maintenance-cost cat, but she's worth it. She's gone back to her heat-pad and is curled up there looking miserable. Claudia is beside her, looking concerned. :-)

When you love them, the maintenance doesn't matter, does it?

More long-distance love to puss.

It doesn't.

And thanks.

My old cat, Foggy, was diabetic, and I had to give him insulin injections daily. It really wasn't that bad. I don't think it hurts them, as you inject them in the scruff of the neck with a very thin disposable needle. I managed it for years.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-08-07 06:54 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks; that's reassuring.

Now that is the sort of diagnosis that tickles my funny bone.
Translation I've no idea what's wrong but this usually cures it.
Hugs to all three of you Tessa very gently cause she's ill and Claudia and you because you care so much.

Lots of strokes for Tessa, and for Claudia too for worrying about her. I wish my two were more sisterly! Though they're both snoozing behind me at present (on different levels), I think seeking reassurance from my presence as my joiner's been round.

[identity profile] jaxomsride.livejournal.com 2008-08-07 11:57 am (UTC)(link)
Oh hope she's better soon.

Such a worry. Hope she's better soon.

Aww, poor kitty. Well, it sounds like it's certainly a good thing that you got her in when you did. Good cat-mom, you! I hope the antibiotics do help with whatever-it-is.

My sister's cat has diabetes -- apparently it's not all that uncommon. He has to have shots for it now, but she says their vet said he was hopeful that eventually they'd just be able to manage it with the right diet. Although, with multiple cats, shots might actually be easier than trying to feed them separately. :)

Sigh. Cats. It's a good thing they are worth it!

*hugs* It sounds like the outside cats are carrying a bug. I wonder if there's anything you can add to your cats' food to strengthen their immune systems?

I hope Tessa is cured by the antibiotics very soon.

I don't think diabetes comes with fever, so I hope the antibiotics will do the trick. I once had a diabetic cat who needed regular insulin shots, too. At first he didn't like it, but then after just a few times I forgot to give him a shot. I felt guilty as hell about that, and it never happened again, but I did notice that after that he didn't mind anymore and he wouldn't even look up from his food bowl if that's where he was when it was time for his shot. I think he noticed then that the shots made him feel better.

Eeeep, something the matter with Tessa??

Best wishes and love to you both!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-08-07 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
The girls do love each other, but Vic's a bit on the outer. There's just toleration there (which is better than having cats who hate each other like a friend did).

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-08-07 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it doesn't sound to be as much of a hassle as I thought it might be. Special diets are hard to manage with more than one cat, but Tessa may have to go on Claudia's kidney one. Depends on the blood tests which I get back today.

Thanks!

I also hope the other two don't catch it from her!

Thanks!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-08-07 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I know that's not the problem right now, but the vet noticed that glucose levels are high, so Tessa might have to have another test when she's better and not as stressed which can also cause that.

Thanks for the reassurance. If she does turn out to have it, it looks as if it won't be as hard to deal with as I thought.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-08-07 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
She got a fever yesterday but she's on antibiotics and seems a bit better today.

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2008-08-07 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
*nods* Maybe there's a powdered vitamin supplement you can sprinkle on their food to help build them up? I had got some from the vet when I had a scrawny puppy and she loved it and really blossomed on it.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-08-07 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Their food is Hills Science Diet and should have all they need, but when I get the blood test results today, I'll ask if they can recommend something. Thanks.

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2008-08-07 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
It couldn't hurt to ask. The dog was doing ok on a perfectly balanced high-quality dog food, but within a few weeks of starting the supplement she was jet-propelled and had a coat like satin.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-08-07 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Claudia wasn't a well kitten and wasn't getting the most from her food, so I put her on dog enzymes (!!!) as recommended by a friend's mother who was a breeder, and she did really well. I told my vet and he started reccing it too. I only needed the one tin; she was fine after that.

*nods* Sometimes our little buddies need a little extra.
