Something's eating the sun!

And it's the moon!

Today's partial eclipse is still going but past its greatest coverage which was 47%. The light looked a bit wintry even though it's a hot day, and enough of the sun was hidden to get those weird crescent-shaped shadows, or more accurately, lack of shadows as light through leaves shows the progress of the eclipse better than a pinhole in card.

Crescents of light on the deck and a wall of the house.

That big round shadow is me taking the photo.

And the cats are in the cattery. They're actually very happy there with all the toys, private hammocks, and outside play area, but I still hate leaving them there. They cry piteously until I leave. :-(

What an experience! The pictures are unique!
As for the cats, as far as they are happy, don“t worry!

Fantastic photos, I really love them. It's so interesting how that works, isn't it?

Cool! I really love the first photo, it looks like modern art.

I'm glad you took such great photos, and posted them, because I'm annoyed with myself. After all my excitement last week, I completely forgot! I was even outside at the right time, and didn't even notice :(

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 08:32 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you!

I miss the cats, and I can't help but worry about them. I'll feel better once the holiday has started and I'm not at home with empty spaces where they should be. :-)

I saw this effect a few years ago and was intrigued. The last partial eclipse wasn't big enough to do it.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 08:33 am (UTC)(link)
It looks sort of Japanese to me. :-)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 08:34 am (UTC)(link)
Awww, what a pity. Gorgeous icon!

I can't recall the last time we had a partial solar eclipse but I definitely remember seeing the phenomenon myself a few years ago. It's really creepy, to be sure.

[identity profile] imhilien.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 08:55 am (UTC)(link)
Very dramatic! I had to work late today, so the eclipse was the last thing on my mind. :(

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 09:24 am (UTC)(link)
Poor you. I was determined to see it!

[identity profile] jacteest.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 12:11 pm (UTC)(link)
The first photo is a beauty!

I love the massed crescents in the second photo and the look of the first one. Wonderful detail of the grain in the wood. The picture really has some good textures in it.

OK, that is cool. The pictures that is, not the crying cats. Although I'm sure the cats will be fine.

(My own cats are unhappy with me today, because Happiness is going in to get her teeth cleaned, and wasn't allowed to have any food after 3PM yesterday, which means nobody got any food left out. They have such terribly hard lives. :))

So cool.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! I wasn't sure how well they'd turn out.

Thank you! The deck looks more interesting than it is! You might like this one of Vic on it.

I was very pleased to get them.

Poor little things. They don't understand. They even give me dirty looks when it rains. I hope it goes well with Happiness.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Isn't it! :-D

That's a scary icon!

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL! Such faith they have in your awesome powers, blaming you for the rain. :)

I'm hoping it goes well with Happiness, too. They called me this morning and said they noticed an anomaly on her ECG when they did it before giving her the anesthetic... They thought it might be a symptom of hyperthyroidism, especially since she's been losing weight, but they tested her for that and it's negative. Apparently her heart is a tiny bit enlarged, though. I'm not sure what that means... They were going to not do the cleaning, just to be on the safest side, but apparently she has an abscess that I didn't even know about, and they want to deal with that. If it hurts her to eat, that might well be why she's losing weight. Sigh. The vet said they'd watch her very carefully, and she didn't seem to think it was too dangerous, but I'm still a little worried. Although, really, more about whether she's developing heart problems than about the anesthetic.

I'll probably blog about it later when I know how she's doing.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Poor Happiness! They were right not to go ahead. My Sigi died of a weak heart no one knew about while having her teeth done. Sigi BTW also went right off her food because of a sore mouth, so if they fix that, Happiness should be eating again soon.

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, they did go ahead. They had to put her under to remove the tooth with the abscess. (At least, I think they said they were going to pull it.) After doing a whole bunch of tests, the vet seemed to think the risk was small compared to the benefit of dealing with the tooth.

But I am glad they did the ECG work beforehand. They said they'd be monitoring her heart very carefully while she's under.

And I really am hoping that the weight loss was due to her not eating because of the tooth. Aww, but I feel really bad now. When I had her to the vet a year ago, the vet said she ought to have a cleaning within six months or a year, and I put it off. I was so busy worrying about Vir. Sigh.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Sigi had a horrible abscess and I didn't know. :-( Tessa's had a couple too. They can come up very quickly, so don't feel too guilty.

I'm glad they monitor hearts now.

[virtual cuddles and scritches to Happiness]

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the vet said they can be really non-obvious, too. Still, poor kitty.

They charge extra to check out the heart beforehand, but I'm really glad I had them do it.

Will pass along the cuddles and scritches when she gets home!
