I thought I'd do the "my top 10 AO3 stories" meme only because the fandoms are an interesting mix. Why yes, B7 hardly features, but none of my fandoms is exactly a major one except for SGA which I crossed with B7 and rendered minor.

My 10 top stories )

vilakins: (eep)

Publicly embarrass yourself too!
Post your first fan fiction ever. C'mon, I showed you mine, now show me yours!

I've been writing since I started school, but fanfic? My very first fanfic was Vila Restal's Emails (first under "Humour" on this page), which I started writing while I was watching Blake's 7 reruns in 2001. Wow, 9 years ago! :-P They weren't quite the first published though. I think the first was one of these three very short ones, two written in response to a certain person's challenges on a mailing list, back when I was such a newbie I didn't realise that she was always asking bizarre questions (and still is though I kill-filed her long ago).

From [livejournal.com profile] fannish5: Name five kick-arse female characters,

This is not hard. I could name more than that from Blake's 7 alone, but if I restrict myself to one per fandom which also isn't B7, then:

  • Emma Peel from The Avengers - so elegant and understated
  • Susan Ivanova from Babylon 5 - tough and always in command
  • Aeryn Sun from Farscape - radiant, awesome, and stunning
  • Ms Parker from The Pretender - her snark is another weapon in her arsenal
  • Fiona Glenanne from Burn Notice - guns and explosives aren't just her profession, they're her hobby too
I only have two of those in an icon. I should acquire more.

vilakins: (rodney lemon)

These are the characters I chose with brief descriptions in case you don't know them:

  1. Sheldon Cooper (Big Bang Theory) - theoretical physicist and extreme nerd
  2. Fiona Glenanne (Burn Notice) - weapons and explosives expert
  3. Rodney McKay (Stargate Atlantis) - physicist and egotist with an allergy to citrus
  4. Dayna Mellanby (Blake's 7) - weapons and explosives expert
  5. Jarod (The Pretender) - genius who can pick up anything
  6. John Casey (Chuck) - taciturn CIA agent
  7. Vila Restal (Blake's 7) - galactic thief and nervous with it
  8. Abby Sciuto (NCIS) - genius goth geek
  9. Howard Wolowitz (Big Bang Theory) - space engineer sleazeball
  10. Emma Peel (The Avengers) - awesome, kick-arse, and elegant
  11. Hugo "Hurley" Reyes (Lost) - lovable dude
  12. Chuck Bartowski (Chuck) - computer expert and reluctant spy with a brain full of downloaded espionage info
  13. Ms Parker (The Pretender) - tough, mean, and cool
  14. Michael Westen (Burn Notice) - burned but brilliant spy
  15. Teal'c (Stargate SG-1) - even more taciturn Jaffa warrior
And here are my answers to the questions people gave me.

OK, next time it's one question each! :-)

The week's run of cloudless and beautiful winter days is over and it's back to being dark, grey, and wet. So I'll do the 15 character meme too; it's always wacky fun.

1) Make a list of fifteen characters first, and keep it to yourself for the moment. (That way you're not leading the questions asked to fit the characters.)

2) Ask your flist to post questions in the comments.

For example:

'1, 9 and 15 are chosen by a prophecy to save the world from 4. Do they succeed?'
'Under what circumstances might 5 and 7 fall in love?'

3) After your flist has asked enough questions, round them up and answer them using the fifteen characters you selected beforehand, then post them.
OK, I have a nicely varied list across at least 8 fandoms, so bring it on!

From [livejournal.com profile] fannish5: Name your five favourite spaceships.

1. The Liberator: so elegant and different. And comfy inside too.
2. Moya, the living ship.
3. The Enterprise which engaged (ha!) my imagination so when I was a kid.
4. The Millennium Falcon. It's old and battered but it still rocks.
5. The HMS Camden Lock, protecting Britain's interests in a changing galaxy. :-D Here's a picture I drew of it.

Your result for The Fan Fiction Personality Test...

The Mindgamer

Everything is possible, nothing is ever really over. Fanfiction is a creative outlet for you. You don't intentionally write it, it just happens. You find inspiration in several fandoms, but are not obsessed with only one.

You like to explore "what if" situations. What if this character had never made this very choice? What if this event had taken place sooner, never, elsewhere? What if these people had never met?

You are likely to write Alternative Universes, fan seasons or sequels and just follow your (sometimes pretty strange) plot bunnies.

Take The Fan Fiction Personality Test at OkCupid

This result just beat the True Fan by 85% to 84%.

And now for another fannish meme, seen in several places:

Ask me one fandom-related question in the comments. This can be fandom-specific, general, about fic writing or art or whatever.

vilakins: (screen)

Snurched from [livejournal.com profile] kalinda001:

1) Post a list of up to 20 books / movies / anime / TV shows / video games / bands that you've had a fannish love or interest in at some point.
2) Have people guess your favourite character / member from each one.
3) When someone guesses correctly, strikethrough the item and put the name of your favourite character and who guessed it first next to it.

OK, the first one should be dead easy. ;-)

OK, know I've had a night's sleep and done some pet and human food shopping on this very warm and fine spring day, I shall respond to the Stories I have never written (and in most cases are very unlikely to write meme. You lot didn't make it easy for me either.

From [livejournal.com profile] astrogirl2: I adored 'Multiversal Thief!' I mean, I knew you could stick Vila in universes like Farscape's and make it entertaining -- and I did enjoy his brief encounter with Chiana and Zhaan -- but some of those crossover possibilities would never have occurred to me in a million years, and you really made them work. I think it was when he popped out into the world of The Simpsons that I started grinning like crazy, and I didn't stop until the end. And I still think you should write a sequel featuring the shows you missed out -- not that there were all that many! )

From [livejournal.com profile] wolfma: I loved the post-GP one where Vila and Avon become strippers. )

From [livejournal.com profile] entropy_house: 'A Fur Piece' was a great caper story. I loved Vila trying to make up to Cally by stealing Servalan's fur coats for her, and having to dress up in one of them and pretend to be Servalan when Travis 'reported for duty'. The scene with the lights out was hilarious. And when Vila found his teleport bracelet and told Travis 'I'd rather kiss a wookie'... and did it in Servalan's voice! I hurt myself laughing. )

From [livejournal.com profile] kernezelda: Vila and Chiana just had a blast, and I had a blast reading them. I'm sure the Doctor was a lot more amused than he let on, even if the Tardis did get a tiny, tiny little dent from the pursuit. 'All's Fair In Love and War' is a classic for a reason! )

From [livejournal.com profile] jaxomsride: 'Vila, The Witch and The Ward's Robe.' I thought this was great. The scene between Jadis and Servalan remains etched in my brain. )

From [livejournal.com profile] redstarrobot: I know you tend to be a Vila girl, so I was very impressed by 'The Many Irresistible Charms of Sam Axe' - it was so incredibly tongue-in-cheek, and you did a masterful job of showing him both as capable ex-covert ops agent navigating a back-stabbing world of intelligence operatives and as the self-centered-with-a-heart-of-gold comic-foil ladies' man with an over-fondness for margaritas and easy living. )

From [livejournal.com profile] executrix: I thought that 'Always Winter and Never Chanukah' gave a really interesting look into the difficult life of Jewish fauns. )

From [livejournal.com profile] snowgrouse: I wonder if there was a longer story behind that double drabble of Vila performing as a magician in a circus. It was interesting to see how even he winced when Avon wanted to steal money from the orphans and stuff, and I liked the exploration of both their morals in such a short and poignant piece. 'Juggling Priorities' needs a sequel or twelve:). )

From [livejournal.com profile] vandonovan: 'Sheep In Wolf's Clothing'. I really liked the way you handled Vila infiltrating the Alpha sectors and convincing people--especially Avon--that he was an Alpha. Though still think my favorite part is when he put on that dress! I hope you'll do a sequel later, to show us what happens to crew dynamics now that we know Vila was faking all this time. )

From [livejournal.com profile] kerravonsen: 'More Heist, Less Speed' was great fun! I like how you dealt with the time-travel stuff, but the joy was in the interaction between Jarod and Vila. I liked how Vila was charmingly sly, while Jarod, seeming to be taken in at first, you got the impression that he had clued in on Vila's lies, and was pretending to be more naive than he was. And of course, seeing them working together was awesome. )

vilakins: (writing)

I so enjoyed the inventive replies to others' posts, I thought I'd do this too.

Give me the title of a story I've never written, and feedback telling me what you liked best about it, and I will tell you any of: the first sentence, the last sentence, the thing that made me want to write it, the biggest problem I had while writing it, why it almost never got posted, the scene that hit the cutting room floor but that I wish I'd been able to salvage, or something else that I want readers to know.

I'll accumulate responses and answer them in a separate post.

A meme seen in several places:

Name your 15 favourite couples (het/slash/friendship) and ask people to see what trends they notice. Try to pick different fandoms.

This isn't that easy for me as I just don't think in terms of pairings.

  1. Avon & Vila (Blake's 7)
  2. Vila / Soolin (Blake's 7; probably just me, that one)
  3. Stark / Zhaan (Farscape)
  4. Londo & Vir (Babylon 5)
  5. Londo & G'Kar (Babylon 5)
  6. Spock & McCoy (ST:TOS)
  7. Data & Spot (ST:TNG)
  8. Seven & Janeway (ST:Voy)
  9. Garak & Bashir (ST:DS9)
  10. Jarod & Sydney (The Pretender)
  11. Shawn & Gus (Psych)
  12. Precious Ramotswe & Grace Makutsi (No 1 Ladies Detective Agency)
  13. Teal'c & Bra'tac (SG1)
  14. John & Rodney (SGA)
  15. Locke & Ben (Lost)

I don't think there's a pattern there other than the prevalence of gen.

Quote from Red Dwarf.

This is one of my favourites.

Lister: D'ya think Wilma's sexy?
Cat: Wilma Flintstone?
Lister: Maybe we've been alone in deep space too long, but every time I see that body, it drives me crazy. Is it me?
Cat: Well, I think in all probability, Wilma Flintstone is the most desirable woman that ever lived.
Lister: That's good. I thought I was going strange.
Cat: She's incredible!
Lister: What d'ya think of Betty?
Cat: Betty Rubble? Well, I would go with Betty... but I'd be thinking of Wilma.
Lister: This is crazy. Why are we talking about going to bed with Wilma Flintstone?
Cat: You're right. We're nuts. This is an insane conversation.
Lister: She'll never leave Fred, and we know it.

And for anyone who's ever sat a driving test (since [livejournal.com profile] sallymn mentioned hers elsewhere):
Rimmer to Kryten: Right, in your own time, if you'd like to start the space vehicle, proceed through the cargo bay doors, and off into outer space. Once through the doors, proceed directly to the nearest planet. Once there I want you to bring the vehicle to a halt and then carefully reverse into the planet's orbit, remembering of course at all times to pay due care and attention to any other space users. Right, in your own time.
