I've been on DW for a few years now, cross-posting, but I don't have all of you on my subscription filters there as in many cases you did most of your posting and commenting on LJ.

However, if you're moving and I'm not already reading and commenting on DW, please let me know and I'll subscribe and grant access, or change my filters so I do.

I'm vilakins there too. If you have a different name on DW, please let me know what it is. I don't want to lose touch.

In the meantime I'll be staying in both places until I no longer know anyone here. :-) (I'll also be doing an extra-icon purge so I don't pay LJ any more money.)

I should make it clear that I'm not leaving LJ (I think my last post was a bit ambiguous). I just didn't want to lose track of anyone I follow if they left and went to DW and I didn't know about it.

I don't see why people are worried about the servers being in Russia other than the problems LJ has been having lately. But if you move to DW, let me know to make sure I can subscribe to you there.

I saw this on FaceBook: 10 signs you were obsessed with LiveJournal. Only numbers 1 (You bought a premium account just so you could have more icons), 8 (You had a love/hate relationship with image hosting sites), and 10 (Your LJ friends became real friends - YESSS!) really applied to me. #8 still does apply to Dreamwidth. Having to resize, upload, then link photos is a right pain and one of the reasons I keep putting it off, so I've decided I'll restrict pic-heavy posts to LJ because of sheer galloping laziness. Even though it will store said pics on LJ's execrable Crapbook.

In other news it's back to work tomorrow and this is very depressing, also because the offices aren't air-conditioned and it's very hot very early in summer; usually this sort of heat is February weather. Plus my work laptop's solid state drive went belly up just before the break, Greg thinks because of the heat, but surely they're used in hotter countries than this. Anyway, it'll take me a while to get the rebuilt laptop back to the way I like it. At least I had a daily backup.

Work: DO NOT WANT.

[livejournal.com profile] imhilien and I went to see The Hobbit: Battle of 5 Armies in 3D this morning, me for the second time. Not enough Bilbo but I have to say I love the 3D. Afterwards we went for lunch and decided to have pancakes. "But I don't want eggs or bacon," I said, regarding the listing with misgivings:

From memory: Pancakes with scrambled eggs, bacons (sic), banana, maple syrup, ice cream, cream.
Most of the brunch items had bacons. :-P

[livejournal.com profile] imhilien was sure they were just options, but nope. I asked for banana with no bacon, and got the puzzled question, didn't I want the scrambled eggs? In the end we got our sweet pancakes plus some nice boysenberry preserve, but seriously, who would eat such a strange taste mishmash?

Once again LJ shoots itself in the foot with its ghastly new friends page. You can see it in all its hideousness if you click on "switch to the new one" in the pale blue bar at the top; you can switch right back, and I expect you will. If that goes live as is without allowing opt-out or customisation, I will not be reading anyone on LJ. Unless, as kerravonsen says, someone can rec a good RSS feed reader that's pleasant to look at and maybe even customisable? This latest utter crap is a deal-breaker.

Depending on who stays on the sinking ship, I may have to move my comms or hand them over to someone else.

I've added everyone I know about on DW to my subscription lists and hope they'll be posting or crossposting there. If you're there and I'm not subscribed, let me know.

vilakins: (me with cat and wine)

Happy birthday to [personal profile] kerravonsen! I hope you're having a great day.

My journal also has its birthday today: 8 years old! I'm so glad I started it and got to know so many great people through it, like [personal profile] kerravonsen. :-D

In case you don't know, LJ has this great new feature: filtering your reading list by people's tags (if of course they use them).

You can modify settings for anyone (who uses tags) on your Edit Friends page. Another way of doing it is hovering over a friend's userhead and choosing Edit Tags. You can choose to include or exclude tags (but not, it seems, both).

So useful if you don't want to read posts about say sports or politics or particular fandoms. Now you'll be able to filter out my daily art posts come August if you're not interested.

For those who are annoyed about the extra unwanted boxes on the comment screen which stop you going TAB and ENTER, if you have Firefox, there's a great little Greasemonkey script you can install

1) If you don't have Greasemonkey, you can add it like any other Firefox add-on here. You'll have to close and restart Firefox to activate it.

2) Then just install this script; no need to restart.

3) Speaking of add-ons, LJ hook is a brilliant one for formatting comments, though I don't like the HTML it produces for bold and italic; I still do those by hand.

I also have Dreamwidth invites if anyone is so annoyed they want one. :-)

Good night! And BTW it's the first day of spring here, yay!

A lot of people have been friended by bot accounts which have generated text about Masha and Andrew in them, plus links to work-from-home sites. There may be others using similar schemes.

There's now a bot account reporting tool; thank you LJ. I've reported three accounts there already.

Not only are the pohutukawa trees (see icon) in bloom already which means a long and dry summer (I hope), I heard my first cicada today. Yay!

As for 6A selling LJ off, they say that "SUP has launched an American company, LiveJournal, Inc., to manage and operate LiveJournal globally" which sounds a lot better than a Russian company. Also Brad Fitzpatrick is going to be on the advisory board "which will be comprised of both industry experts and members of the LiveJournal community." This could be good. I hope. I really hope.

Like [livejournal.com profile] shimere277, I ran the word count plug-in on LJArchive. Here are my top 10:

WordCount
Vila1324
Avon677
Blake287
Cally262
Blake's240
he'd192
Jenna182
Tarrant172
hello168
Dayna161

I must say it shows up my obsessions. On average I mention Vila at least once in each post? I post a lot of fiction, but still, that's...worrying. He's mentioned almost twice as much as Avon, who is still way ahead of the others. Where did "he'd" and "hello" come from though? Vila uses "hello" (I prefer "hi") but why does it beat out poor Dayna? I also thought I'd written at least as much about Soolin as Dayna (I like the PGP pairing of her and Vila) but she's ranked 18th.

I don't understand the terms in the regressive imagery analysis plug-in, but apparently my big three are vision, soft, and order. I'm a very visual person, but I'm in the dark for the rest. What is Icarian imagery, for example: flight of the imagination with way wings? According to [livejournal.com profile] shimere277, it's all Freudian stuff which I despise, so I think just I'll ignore it.

Yay! This is the 1000th post on my LJ!

LJArchive, which I downloaded a few days ago after [livejournal.com profile] glitterboy1 recommended it, tells me it is, though LJ itself thinks it's 974. [livejournal.com profile] glitterboy1 and I were puzzled about the discrepancy, but the very next day LJ admitted in this post to a bug that decreased the count by two every time anyone deleted a post. I didn't think I'd deleted as many as 13, but maybe I have.

I hope they fix the count on people's profile, but I won't hold my breath.

LJ seem to have learned from people's reactions to suddenly introduced changes and features, This time they're telling us about the search engine they're developing, and reassuring us that privacy settings will be respected. They're also very funny about the emo stuff:

It uses one third of San Francisco's water supply to cool and it has a dedicated Nuclear Reactor just to provide the power to index the word "depressed". The phrase "my parents don't understand me" takes up so much physical disk space that we had to hire the hangars at Moffets Field.
Bwahaha!

Me, I'm looking forward to it. I sometimes find it hard to find things on my LJ or flist; the search box I have in my profile isn't that great and only goes back so far.

I've spent the last couple of days making a custom mood theme in the hopes it might make me use moods more often. Yes, it's mainly Vila (he's my theme anyway, and besides, he's so expressive) but I've used others for those moods Vila doesn't have (e.g. Cally for predatory, Avon for geeky, Soolin for artistic). I'm lazy efficient and didn't bother to find pictures for each mood; if I consider them synonyms, I used the same picture, and some can be interpreted as a couple of different moods. All the same, I have around 70 different ones.

When I set my LJ to use the theme, I went to look for the most recent post which used a mood and laughed when I saw what it was. Ahem.

I was shamed into setting some of these by this meme. So I'm lazy.

My journal is called _____ because _____.
My subtitle is _____ because _____.
My friends page is called _____ because _____.
My username is ____ because _____.
My default userpic is _____ because_____.

My journal is called 'Nico's Journal' because it is. Sorry.

My subtitle is 'May also contain peanuts and Blake's 7 fiction' because so much junk food has the peanuts warning, and the other bit is obvious.

My friends page is called 'Rebel Rabble' because I'm a Blake's 7 fan. Which everyone must know by now.

My username is vilakins because Vila's my favourite and it's a pet name for a him, and he needs one, being starved for affection. Actually, all the names I tried before that (nico, nicola, vila, even spitfire, my primary school nickname, and rommel, my high school and uni one), were gone. So I went with my yahoo ID, and that worked out well because it matches my yahoo addy and now my Gmail one. Consistency is good.

My default userpic is this one because Vila was a Delta, and I think he did get dealt a bad hand in life, what with the readjustments, the imprisonments as a kid, and the general attitude of a lot of his fellow crewmembers. Poor guy. I try to make it up to him with my fiction. [hugs Vila]
