vilakins: Vila in Hello Kitty style (hello vila)
Yesterday, still my birthday in the US, I got a lovely package from [livejournal.com profile] vandonovan containing discs with classic Doctor Who and a couple of favourite Simpsons episodes, one of them with backgrounds references to B7 and DW at the 'bi-monthly sci-fi con'. :-)

And a hand-drawn card! I have Van's permission, so I scanned the front and back pics. Behold:
Chibi Avon and Vila, and Orac and an unimpressed cat! )

I thought my birthday in RL would be bit of a fizzle because most restaurants don't open on Monday nights, so I met Greg for lunch. When I got there though, he'd just been phoned about an emergency, so I just bought a samosa and went home where I could follow it with ice-cream and a book. I'd have consoled myself with a massage but hey, it's Monday and salons are closed as well. At least I wasn't Ugly Betty stood up in a fashionable restaurant with cheese fondue for two.

And if I hadn't gone out, I'd have been home when [livejournal.com profile] kerravonsen rang. She did leave a lovely rendition of 'Happy Birthday' on my voicemail though, and I knew it was her singing before she said so. [delighted grin and hugs]

Greg's home now and it seems that there are some restaurants open in Mission Bay (which is wall-to-walls restaurants and cafes) so I'm getting a dinner out after all, yay!

And look [points at icon] - I also got an adorable mini Vila from the talented [livejournal.com profile] redscharlach, and a gorgeous and happy-making story from [livejournal.com profile] vandonovan, Satisfaction, complete with a banner of Avon and Vila in the outfits they're wearing in the story. [loves]

And I really should link to the Vila with roses [livejournal.com profile] snowgrouse gave me last year because Vila in a suit with roses? Come on!

As for the Daily Mail, I shall be invoicing them tomorrow.

I'm hopeless at remembering birthdays, but:

Happy Birthday to quarryquest, megpie71, and for that matter, my sister-in-law Elenka..

It's Greg's birthday next weekend and he wants to go down to Hamilton again (this time by car) for a river cruise on the paddle steamer Waipa Delta followed by the lit-up Balloons over Waikato in the evening. Sounds great to me. They even have a Darth Vader one (look under Special Shapes -> 2008) which probably won't show up at night though.

This thought cheers me up because today was also the day daylight saving ended, a sure sign that autumn is here and winter is on the way, damn it. Down here it's long, grey, wet, and has no bright spots in it unlike most of your winters. [envies] The only good thing I can think of is that there are no flies or mosquitoes. I cling to that small silver lining.

Since I've been drawing B7 cartoons today, here's Jarriere at the crease. :-)

I'm late, but I had to wait till I got home form work so I could write a little birthday fic for the Jarrigoth.

Man with an Earring

"That man," said Servalan, trying unsuccessfully to slam the door behind her, "is an ingratiating, slimy, lascivious toad." She gave the door a kick, fleetingly denting its vinyl padding. "He dared to offer me a pataki cake."

Jarriere raised his eyebrows, amused at the thought. "Och, aye?" he said noncommittally.

"Neither that nor his demeanour showed a proper respect." Servalan picked up her red glass flower and held it to her nose to sniff the perfume secreted at its centre. "One would be wise not to turn one's back on that man. Although I daresay his aide does so regularly." She paced the room.

Jarriere chuckled, turning his head to watch her, and his earring fell out. Och, damn the wee thing. He'd need to have the hook adjusted. He dropped to all fours.

Servalan halted. "What on earth are you doing?"

"Just searching for my earring, ma'am." He crawled towards her. "It dropped somewhere around here."

The earring was an important part of his armament. If anyone took Jarriere, all they would find on him was a small gun, chosen to match his harmless and foppish exterior. No one would suspect an earring of being anything more than a slightly ridiculous accessory; in fact it contained enough explosive to get him out of a locked room or take out three people if sufficiently close together, or indeed both as had once happened. With of, course, another pair. Ah, there it was.

He sat back on his heels and looked up at Servalan, his face bland and less than alert. "Oh, you don't trust Krantor?"

Last weekend I went down to Hamilton to combine seeing a friend with a birthday treat. We had lunch on the paddle boat Waipa Delta, then wandered round the beautiful Hamilton Gardens (see this page for a description of the different international gardens there). As I already took pictures last time, I was more restrained. All my photos (25 of them) are in this LJ gallery, but here's a selection.

[Edit:] These cows are collector's items; check out Cow Parade (life-sized statues painted by local artists; they had a Cow Parade in Auckland a while back, which I saw). Mine is in there with a story about it. It's called Russell Cow!!! :-) I have decided however that mine is called Maxima.

Sorry if I haven't responded to everyone's birthday wishes and comments, but frelling Telecom upgraded our connection speed today, with no notice (the bastards were meant to do it before Easter) and with their usual technical expertise and competence have completely dorked our connection. So I'm at the library with a lot of schoolkids, using a PC designed for seniors with enormous letters on the keyboard and huge screen fonts.

[Edit]: I'm back. After six hours off-line when it should have been 30 minutes. The techs at Telecom really screwed up, but I'm just glad it's fixed now.

Anyway, we're going away this weekend for a birthday trip to Hamilton, where we're going to Vilagrad Wines' centenary harvest festival tomorrow night. They will have grape-trampling and exotic Brazilian dancers; Vila would so approve. ;-) And on Sunday, I've booked a lunch cruise on the steamboat Waipa Delta. Yes, a very Vila-y weekend!

But that's not all. The big present Greg planned will be delayed till later in the year because we've had a lot of expenses lately, but I will finally get to achieve one of my lifelong dreams: drive a tank - a Centurion, no less! :-D Is it a surprise that my high school nickname was Rommel? :-D

Happy birthday to Harriet the tortoise, 175 years old today. I just saw her on TV at the Australia Zoo having a special dinner of hibiscus flowers and a birthday cake (for the humans, I suspect). She's a giant land tortoise from the Galapagos Islands who was taken to England by Charles Darwin in 1835. For more than a century of her life she was known as Harry until they found their mistake. :-P She's been in the Australia Zoo for the last 18 years and no matter what I think of Steve Irwin, whose zoo it is, she looks pretty lively (for a tortoise) and healthy. Go, Harriet!

Three of them:

  1. My LJ is two years old today! It really doesn't seem that long.

  2. It's [livejournal.com profile] kerravonsen's birthday. Happy birthday, Kathryn! I made you one of the icons you wanted for Christmas. Don't feel you have to use it though. :-P

  3. It's my wedding anniversary in four days and we're celebrating early by going to see Serenity tomorrow at the Circle Lounge luxury cinema. Fireflying, leather recliners with tapas, desserts, and coffee delivered with linen napkins by waiters. Yay.

I got my photos from Zion Wildlife Gardens back and have put them up in an LJ photo gallery. They're all on one page there, and the new ones seem to be a bit brighter than the digital ones. Here are a few of my favourites.

Greg lied--he didn't have a client visit in Whangarei at all (though he does have a client there, who is also a major supporter of the Zion Wildlife Gardens). We went straight to Zion where Greg had booked us a private guided tour, including tiger cubs! And that included a surprise that not even he knew about!

Here are some pictures Greg took with our old digital camera which has such a crap zoom we don't use it. Some are therefore very cropped. I took about 50 photos on my other camera, but the film has yet to be developed. I'll put them up in a gallery when I've got them back. Some of them should be excellent; that camera's got a good zoom.

However, Greg got the cub-feeding on the digital. Yes! I got to bottle-feed a white tiger cub!!!

Bad: This summer has been long and glorious and only really started to fade into autumn a couple of weeks ago. I've been working for most of it though and of course once my contract finished (on Tuesday), so did the fine weather. It's now wet and cold and grey. Typical.

Good (in fact, very good): Greg just rang and he has a business trip to Whangarei on Thursday next week and apparently I'm going too, whether or not I get another contract. His client visit won't take long and There Will Be A Surprise. The Zion Wildlife Gardens are just out of town and I'm betting hoping it's this. [bounce] We're not that fond of zoos but this is different: Craig Bush hand-rears his lions and tigers (including rare Barbaries and whites) and his weekly TV program, The Lion Man, is among our favourites. It's amazing to see him playing with and kissing his animals as if they really are big pussycats, taking them for walks, and even introducing them to the surf. They sometimes do ads and filmwork and one of them, Zion himself, is to be Aslan in The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe. I'm hoping Greg's booked us a tour; maybe I can even cuddle cubs.

Favourite quote from the program as cheeky Savannah sneaks up on Craig from behind: "Don't stalk daddy!"
